A Croctopus (plural Croctopus,[1] Croctopuses,[2] Croctopi,[3] also spelled as croctopi[4] or Croctupi[5] ) is an enemy in the Donkey Kong Country series. These blue-ringed octopus-like creatures are encountered in some underwater stages.

History[edit ]

Donkey Kong Country[edit ]

Croctopus first appear in Donkey Kong Country . They appear in blue and purple varieties. Unlike most underwater enemies, Croctopus cannot be defeated by Enguarde. The purple variety spins around in fixed patterns with all eight arms extended. Several of the blue variety appear in their namesake level, Croctopus Chase, each waiting in a gap until Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong pass by, after which it starts spinning and going after the Kongs in a fixed path up until reaching the next gap. Only the purple variant appears in the first remake, but their behavior is shared between both varieties. In the second remake, there is a Funky's Fishing challenge in Monkey Mines where the Kongs have to catch 15 Croctopus before time runs out.

There exists an unused sprite of Croctopus in the original version. While its purpose is unknown, the sprite could possibly be one for when it is defeated.[6]

Donkey Kong Country comic[edit ]

Several Croctopuses appear in the German Donkey Kong Country comic. In one part, a Croctopus attacks the Kongs with its spinning arms, but is stopped by a Squidge who wants to attack the Kongs instead.
