SHARE RELEASE:
More cows’ milk produced

Around 631,000 tonnes of cows’ milk was produced in 2025, i.e. 3.6% or almost 22,000 tonnes more than a year earlier. Cows were milked on around 7,400 agricultural holdings. Around 4,000 agricultural holdings were producing milk for either sale by contract (to dairies or registered purchasers) or direct sale. On the remaining 3,400 agricultural holdings milk was mostly used as feed or for food (self-supply).

Most of cows’ milk delivered to dairies and other registered purchasers

The quantity of delivered cows’ milk represented more than 93% of all cows’ milk produced in Slovenia. The total quantity of delivered cows’ milk (around 588,900 tonnes) increased by around 24,000 tonnes (or 4.3%) compared to 2024. Last year, cows’ milk was delivered from around 3,700 agricultural holdings, i.e. 200 fewer than in the previous year. Milk production is mainly being abandoned on farms with smaller milk production. In the last seven years, the number of farms with milk delivery has been decreasing by around 5% annually. Meanwhile, larger farmers are increasing the production. Also due to those reasons, the average quantity of delivered milk per farm went up by about 10% over the previous year and amounted to almost 158 tonnes in 2025.

Quantity of milk delivered from farms up in all statistical regions

From agricultural holdings in the Pomurska statistical region delivery of cows’ milk increased the least, by less than 2%, while in Zasavska and Savinjska the quantity of delivered milk it increased the most, by around 7% in each.

Detailed data on the structure of producers of delivered cows’ milk and deliveries by statistical region are available in the SiStat Database.

The quantity of cows’ milk intended for animal feed is decreasing

In 2025, around 27,700 tonnes of milk was used as feed or around 7% less than in the previous year. The quantity of milk used as animal feed has been steadily declining over the long term. It has decreased by three quarters since 2005.

Around half a percent of all cows’ milk used for home consumption

Around 3,200 tonnes of cows’ milk was used for home consumption on agricultural holdings. This was 4% more than in the previous year. The quantity is almost 8 times smaller than 20 years ago, mainly due to a much lower number of agricultural holdings where cows were milked.

Less than half a percent of cows’ milk sold directly on the farms

More than 3,800 tonnes of cows’ milk was sold directly from farms. This was almost 40% more than in the previous year.

Less milk products produced on agricultural holdings

Around 7,100 tonnes of cows’ milk or 1.1% of the total was used for the production of milk products on the farms in 2025. According to our data, farm milk products production varies considerably, which, however, is also a result of the way the data are collected (sample survey on a small number of farms).

The production of goats’ and ewes’ milk down

According to our estimates, in 2025, around 1,500 tonnes of goats’ milk was produced, i.e. 11% decrease over the previous year. Ewes’ milk production amounted to less than 600 tonnes and decreased by almost 17%.
