Fewer persons in employment in fishery

In 2025, 211 persons in employment were engaged in fishery economic activities or 2% fewer than in the previous year. In marine fishing the number decreased by 9%, while in mariculture and inland water fish farming it was the same as a year earlier.

Again fewer employees in marine fishing

We estimate that 53 persons in employment were engaged in marine fishing or 9% fewer than in 2024. Two-thirds of them were self-employed fishermen, while others were employed. Among all persons in employment engaged in marine fishing, more than half had full-time jobs.

We estimate that 158 persons were engaged in marine or inland water fish and shellfish farming, which is the same as the year before. The number of self-employed persons was 42% higher, while the number of employed persons (employed at legal or natural persons) decreased by 12%. About 42% of all persons in employment engaged in aquaculture had full-time jobs.

Fewer fishing vessels, production capacity in aquaculture the highest so far

In 2025, 124 fishing vessels were registered, which is 12 fewer than the year before and 12% fewer compared to the ten-year average. The number of fishing vessels decreased in all length groups except in the group over 18 metres. The number of vessels decreased the most (by 11) in the group up to 11.9 metres. Their total gross tonnage decreased to 522 GT, and the total engine capacity to 7,994 kW.

Freshwater fish breeding ponds covered 252 hectares, which is 3% more than the year before. The volume of ponds for breeding freshwater fish increased by just over 4% to 100,200 cubic metres. This is the largest volume to date. The surface area of shellfish breeding facilities was comparable to previous year's area and covered 59 hectares.
