The quantity of farmed aquatic organisms similar to the previous year, average purchase prices higher

Last year, 1,105 tonnes of aquatic organisms were bred, similar to a year earlier. The purchase value was EUR 5.9 million, slightly higher than the year before due to higher average purchase prices. The quantity of fish caught in recreational freshwater fishing increased by 18,5%.

The amount of bred marine fish and molluscs higher by a little more than one third

In 2025, 1,105 tonnes of aquatic organisms were bred by fish farms in Slovenia, which is similar to the previous year.

The largest share was represented by freshwater fish – almost 560 tonnes or 11% less than in the previous year. Among them Rainbow trout prevailed with almost 540 tonnes, which is the smallest amount since 2013 and 8% less at the annual level. The amount of warmwater fish was 13% lower than previous year’s at almost 270 tonnes. Most of this was North African catfish, 123 tonnes, and Carp, 121 tonnes.

On the other hand, the amount of marine fish and molluscs increased last year by 67% to 275 tonnes. 147 tonnes of Mediterranean mussels were bred, which is 31% more than the year before.

The average purchase price of aquatic organisms higher

Total purchase value in aquaculture amounted to EUR 5.9 million, which is 3% more than in the previous year, and simillar to the ten-year average. Purchase prices of bred aquatic organisms were almost 3% higher at the annual level.

Average purchase price of Rainbow trout was EUR 6.33 per kilogram, which is comparable to the previous year and almost a third higher than the ten-year average. A kilogram of Carp cost EUR 3.76, which is slightly more than the year before and the most ever.

In 2025, the highest price since the start of monitoring was also reached by Mediterranean mussels – in average EUR 1.76 per kilogram, which is 16% more than in the previous year and twice as much as the average price in the last decade.

In recreational sea fishing the fewest fish caught since 2015

In recreational sea fishing around 7.3 tonnes of fish and other marine organisms were caught. This is the lowest catch after 2015 and 12% lower than in the previous year.
The share of sea fish was 62%. The amount of caught sea fish – 4.5 tonnes – was the lowest since 2015 and 18% smaller than in the previous year. Of the fish, fishermen caught the most of Common pandora – 1.4 tonnes.
Molluscs and shellfish represented over a third of total catch, almost 2.8 tonnes, which was similar to the previous year. Most of these were Common cuttlefish, around 2.2 tonnes, which is the biggest catch of an individual marine organism, albeit 4%.

In sport fishing activities in inland waters about 145 tonnes of freshwater fish were caught, which is 18,5% more than the year before. Warmwater fish represented the highest share of the total catch in inland waters. Fishermen caught 123 tonnes of warmwater fish, which is almost a fifth more than in the previous year. Carp catch was a little more than a fifth larger than in the previous year and amounted to 64 tonnes – the most among all warmwater fish. Coldwater fish represented almost 15% of total catch, i.e. 21 tonnes, which is comparable to the previous year. Mostly Rainbow trout was caught –19 tonnes, which is also comparable to the previous year.
