Item #: SCP-CN-003

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures:

  • The subject has been recorded onto a ██ cm by ██ cm sheet of standard paper using a randomly generated phoneme-to-grapheme correspondence table. The correspondence table and the record are separately contained in two maximum-security safes equipped with mechanisms to automatically incinerate their comments upon being forcibly opened. This containment system is complete and does not require upkeep. Only Council personnel may access the safes, barring alterations to the Containment Procedures.
  • One living carrier, a human designated SCP-CN-003-1 and formerly named ██████████, has been contained in a 6 m x 6 m standard containment chamber ar Site-CN-12, and is provided with living essentials and a non-interactive entertainment device. Its neck is equipped with a sensor device, which will temporarily suffocate the subject and raise an alert upon detecting that it has vocalized ██ syllables in succession. Surveillance personnel are permitted to hold simple conversations with the subject to maintain its mental health. In the event that a severe risk of containment breach arises, the sensor device is also capable of terminating the subject; its remains can then be disposed in the standard manner. This information must be withheld from SCP-CN-003-1. Barring changes to the Containment Procedures, SCP-CN-003-1 will remain in containment until its natural death, and is to be guaranteed a basic degree of human rights with the abovementioned exceptions.
  • A related object, SCP-CN-003-2, is an antique book titled Another Key of Eden, estimated to be at least 500 years old. The paper remains in good condition; however, much of the ink has faded and become unreadable. This object should be stored in a secure archive for safekeeping.

Description:

  • SCP-CN-003 is an "incantation" consisting of ██ syllables not matching any known language. The linguistic content, if any, of the sequence is unknown; however, it can be transcribed using the standard International Phonetic Alphabet and pronounced accordingly. The efficacy of such a pronunciation is unknown, but in three experiments, trained Class D personnel were able to activate the effect on their first attempt. In addition, testing has shown that all amnestic procedures that do not damage the cerebral cortex are incapable of removing memories related to the anomaly.
  • The effect of the object is that when the user (with a negative opinion) "thinks of" a target human and speaks the "incantation" and draws a certain simple figure ([REDACTED], not necessarily leaving a mark) on any material (including in mid-air), the target will, within 30 minutes, die of a random cause. The cause is not in any way linked to the "caster" or the "incantation" itself; the "incantation" does not affect non-human organisms. The effects and use of the anomaly are not entirely clear, but because of its properties, the Council and the [REDACTED] have voted not to continue testing and adopt a conservative and preventive approach to containment.
  • Based on all of the above, SCP-CN-003 is not the sole criterion for activating this "incantation", but is its key component. It is not yet confirmed whether other uncontained records of SCP-CN-003 exist, nor are there presently any feasible means to search for them on a large scale.
  • SCP-CN-003 was first discovered in a small village in ██████, which had not yet undergone modernization due to [REDACTED]. This village has already been cleared of residents and sealed by the Foundation.

Addendum 1:

From the journal of Agent "T-Rex" (deceased)

September 16… There's no tap water here, and there's a coal mine outside the village; their electricity comes solely from an old coal-burning generator… I don't know why such a place exists in a country like [REDACTED] — there's no tourism or news coverage here, and I don't even know what this place is called. There's a cemetery outside as well, which comes as a shock; many of the tombstones are recently placed — I don't know if this is why we discovered this place. Thousands of unnatural deaths occurred in the surrounding region — 3200 or so — some from accidents, like falls or car accidents; some from heart attacks, asthma, cerebral hemorrhage; some from food poisoning, others from choking — but adding all of them together, since three days ago, 15% of the people within fifty kilometers died of unnatural causes — even if this is a rural area, there was also a significant increase in death rates in an even larger area — but the further out we go the weaker the effect — if it is an effect to begin with. In the capital, 300 kilometers away, the death rate has increased by 5 percentage points — perhaps this is just statistical variation, who knows. What's most unsettling is that there's no relation between the deaths, so we have no way to find out what's causing the increase in death rate. I don't know what I'll write in the report.

From a report by SCP-CN-003-1 (originally ██████████) on 2016年09月15日 (originally on paper):

Based on local residents' testimony, a woman calling herself "Lilith" came by this place three days ago, and gave a speech detailing the method of the curse in the village square. The villagers we asked once again said that they didn't take this 'scary tale for children' seriously, but I think they looked a bit agitated.
After we helped the villagers fix the well, an elder gave me a tattered-looking book (titled Another Key to Eden, apparently a finely handwritten manuscript), expressing his hopes that I would remain here. But given his manner of speech, I can't tell whether he simply wanted me to stay and help out a bit more, or if he was warning me that I could not leave again.

From a report by SCP-CN-003-1 (originally ██████████) on 2016年09月17日 (originally on paper):

Agent T-Rex came to me yesterday and asked me why I hadn't contacted anyone back at base. This is ridiculous, I don't know why Command sent out another person… things are getting a bit difficult now, and the villagers are looking at me differently — T-Rex apparently didn't realize at all that he was in a situation far more dire than mine. I could only warn him to turn off his communications and give up his weapons, before he ends up six feet under. I also finished reading that book; I am debating whether or not to let T-Rex read it as well, but I'm worried that doing that will make the villagers lose trust in me. On the other hand, I feel Agent T-Rex is a vulgar type of person, and not one to respect culture.

From a report by SCP-CN-003-1 (originally ██████████) on 2016年09月17日 (originally through wireless communication):

Stop! Don't execute plan B, I repeat, do not execute last resort measures! I have a way to handle the situation! Listen, I will ask everyone to come to the village square, and all of us will live under watch from the Foundation, and then they won't be able to use the curse — T-Rex's case was an accident, there's no need to kill everyone!

Incident-CN-003-2:
On 2016年10月01日, a containment breach risk emerged at SCP-CN-003's location. After the first observation of violent behavior on 09/25, the object monitoring team gave a warning to ██████████ and the village residents; however, the violence intensified, and on the 26th and 27th at least 7 violent attacks were reported in the monitoring zone. In addition, multiple women were assaulted and residents began to break down doors and enter houses. Five security personnel within view of the villagers were instructed to retreat, but were killed due to, respectively, stroke, falling from a monitoring tower, blunt force trauma to the head from an unknown high-speed object, being trapped in the blades of a helicopter while attempting to escape, and a helicopter accident during flight. At 1700 hours on the 1st of October, the containment committee permitted the use of a neutron cannon and MK-2 type mixed-control armed bipedal robots to clear the area; ██████████was successfully extracted and subdued beforehand.

Addendum 2:
Excerpts from Another Key to Eden:

'Oh, how pitiful!' the witch laughed, as if the flames were merely tickling her feet. 'The Lord did not teach you to clothe yourselves, yet you insist on clothing yourselves in spite of Him; if not because you wish to hide the body He made in His own image, why else would you have been expelled from Paradise?'

The peasants on the ground, clothed in rags, raised their hands to stone the witch, but not one stone struck her body; the flames burned through her clothes and licked at her skin, but left not a single burn.
You have forgotten Abram, and Moses, and David — you have forgotten Herod, you have even forgotten Jesus and his crucifixion, though you wear his cross around your neck! I promised to bring you to the Garden of Eden — that's right, I am the true harbinger, and the Lord will not let the fire harm me!
The naked witch's eyes flashed black, like Satan's evil hand had thrust itself into her heart. She was the first woman the Lord had made; she did not follow her Father and was expelled from Paradise, becoming the bride of the Devil. How could an ordinary bonfire compare to the fire and brimstone of Hell!
The witch, amidst the fire, spoke a string of phonemes, which etched themselves in the minds of all who heard them. 'The person you hate, would you not like to tell him to his face to die? Why do you conceal your hatred? Hatred is not a sin; the real sin is to hide your hatred behind polite niceties! Let your hatred take all of you back to the bare Garden of Eden!' she said, and the moment she finished speaking she disappeared in a plume of black smoke.
That night, half the people of the city died, and every night thereafter half the remainder died. By the fifth night, the only trustworthy man left in the city was an old pastor. He called the remaining one hundred people to the church and said three things: first, that the people who had already died had certainly sinned greatly, and died as punishment; second, that none were to leave this place, or the Lord would take his vengeance, and third, to ensure that those among them who had heard the Devil's incantation were always under watch, so that they could not speak the incantation.

From then on, these hundred lived alongside the pyre, not a single one of them allowed out of another's sight.

section of illegible text//
The chief returned triumphantly from his expedition, but when he surveyed his land one city did not open its gates to greet him. He sent his soldiers to open the gates, and saw that the streets and houses were run down and long abandoned. A pyre was lit in the central town square, with bones piled up around it. A twig was growing out of the pile, with a crimson fruit growing out of it. In the square were a man and a woman, both naked with their hair in disarray, unable to speak, relying on the fruits of the tree for sustenance; the man only cried 'Eve', and the woman 'Adam'. The two ignored the chief, and before the army acted so obscenely, and so the chief grew angry and ordered the two killed. Now there is no one left in the city.

Addendum 3:
Dr. ██████'s (SCP-CN-003 containment head) comments on SCP-CN-003-1 (originally ██████████):

I don't think we should execute him. He is not a Class D; this anomaly had spread more than enough, and he is a hero for confining is spread. All of us, including me — I cannot fault them for being passionate, nor can I delegate this trivial task to each of them — that requires money, and would cause irreversible damage to the brain. But this does not mean that I do not have my reservations: during his mission, Agent ██████, who he had never gotten along well with, died while fishing on vacation; after he came back, we checked his personal history and discovered that his love rival back at █████████ University had also passed away. Even though it's only two incidents, I don't think we should let our guard down. Investigation is to continue.

Additional Information:
Excerpt from the list of related incidents occurring among SCP-CN-003-1 (originally ██████████)'s social circle during the relevant tenure:
██████, subject's colleague in the Foundation's ████████████ Department; died from drawning after falling into the water while fishing; specific status unclear. Was a competitor for the Foundation's exceptional service award with the subject, and the two would often argue.
█████ ██, subject's classmate in █████████ University; died in a traffic accident. Based on gathered information, he was a love rival of the subject.
█. █. █████, subject's Physical Education teacher at ███████ █████ High School. Died of gunshot, incident remains unresolved. Often humiliated the subject in front of his classmates.
███ ████, subject's classmate at ████████ Elementary School. Died of heart disease caused by obesity. Often had fights with the subject in fourth grade, including pushing him to the ground.
███ ██, subject's uncle, died of diabetes. Was part of a wealthy family, and often ridiculed the subject's side of the family for being poor.

"The O5 Council has privately discussed the common name for the anomaly, and proposed "Lilith's Curse", "Life-Stealing Curse", etc; in the end we settled on "Revealing Curse", because it reveals the dark side of the relations between humans; once it spreads into greater human society, humanity will enter into an endless era of chaos and distrust, and the survivors will only be able to live on with their agendas open for all to see."
— O5-█
