SPECIAL CONTAINMENT PROCEDURES

SCP-001-PIG-EX is contained via use of SCP-001-PIG-EX-A. Further procedures for the anomaly itself are considered unnecessary.

Per the established agreement between the SCP Foundation and the Coca-Cola Company, hereafter referred to as the "Boston Accords", SCP-001-PIG-EX has been officially denoted as being under the Explained Object Class and has been accepted into consensus normalcy via unanimous approval of the Overseer Council despite its anomalous traits. Both the Foundation and Coca-Cola are to maintain joint custody of SCP-001-PIG-EX-A, but primary authority over both the anomaly and its containment is to be maintained by the Foundation.

719px-Coca-Cola_syrup.jpg?20220306010132

Early container for SCP-001-PIG-EX-A derivative, circa 1906.

All attempts to tamper with SCP-001-PIG-EX-A are to be considered both an Alpha-01 Threat to consensus normalcy and a danger to the populous of the world as a whole, and are subject to being responded to via various punishments outlined in Document 001-PIG-3A, the most common of which being immediate termination. As per the Boston Accords, a significant number of agents from both the Foundation and the Coca-Cola Company have been combined to form Joint Task Force Alpha-001 ("Quincey’s Enforcers"), which has been assembled to both directly protect SCP-001-PIG-EX-A and prevent any breach of information related to the anomaly or its various derivative products.

SCP-001-PIG-EX-A itself has been continuously maintained within the area of its discovery, where it is to remain as decided upon within the Boston Accords. Specifically, this location is the sub-basement beneath Area-001, which has been considerably modified since first occupied by both organizations who directly oversee the anomaly. Further modification of the area requires approval from the leadership of both the Coca-Cola Company and the Overseer Council. Personnel onsite to oversee SCP-001-PIG-EX-A all each require a similar approval individually. This full recruitment process is outlined on Document 001-PIG-8C.

Alongside the procedures related to the anomaly’s direct containment, both parties have agreed a point of importance to guise the established relationship between the Foundation and the Coca-Cola Company. To this end, several strategies have been employed by both parties as per the points first decided upon and subsequently written within the Boston Accords:

  • The SCP Foundation Pig Latin (PIG) Branch has been established to directly oversee containment of SCP-001-PIG-EX. This branch is to operate as a subsidiary of the primary English (EN) Branch and is to handle anomalies deemed by the Overseer Council to warrant containment by primarily English speakers but not within the main branch.
  • The Foundation has created several false "SCP-001-PIG" files to be maintained alongside the real file in order to obfuscate any attempts to discern the true nature of SCP-001-PIG-EX.
  • The Coca-Cola Company has established a legendary status for their flagship drink’s "secret formula", which is maintained by public disinformation and advertisement campaigns. This serves to hide the drink’s true origin and further distract from SCP-001-PIG-EX and SCP-001-PIG-EX-A.
  • Despite initial apprehension from Coca-Cola, the Foundation has funded the production of several other competitive soda brands in order to lessen direct attention on the Coca-Cola Company, and, by extension, SCP-001-PIG-EX.
  • The Coca-Cola Company has become a membership organization of the Global Occult Coalition’s Council of 108. Though the Foundation and the Coalition maintain a somewhat positive relationship, many of its individual membership organizations do not possess any direct contact with the Foundation, leading to less suspicion towards Coca-Cola.
  • The Foundation has exclusively supplied all of its vending machines with Coca-Cola brand soft drinks since its inception, despite their decidedly anomalous origins. This goes against the organization’s standard policies, but serves to further bind the Coca-Cola Company to the Foundation.
  • In direct correlation to the previous point, Coca-Cola has granted the Foundation an 85% discount on all of its purchases from the company on all of its products. PepsiCo has attempted to disrupt this relationship by offering the Foundation a similar discount on its products, but the Coca-Cola Company’s was deemed more beneficial via Overseer Council consensus.

Alongside the above points, a significant campaign to rewrite the history of the Coca-Cola Company has been orchestrated by both signees of the Boston Accords to further obscure SCP-001-PIG-EX. The only documentation permitted to provide the true history of both organizations is the one describing the anomaly itself. For this reason, alongside those related to the secrecy warranted by the anomaly itself, the primary documentation for SCP-001-PIG-EX and SCP-001-PIG-EX-A is to be classified Level 5/001-PIG Top-Secret.

Any active experimentation with SCP-001-PIG-EX-A by Coca-Cola for the development of further derivative products requires unanimous approval from the Overseer Council and subsequent testing to ensure the taste is adequate to avoid a second 001-PIG-NEWCOKE Event.

DESCRIPTION

SCP-001-PIG-EX refers to an anomalous phenomenon affecting a poem authored by 20th century Chinese warlord Zhang Zongchang, titled "Poem about bastards". The poem is one of many authored by Zongchang, but is the only to have formed a phenomenon which would denote it as being of interest to the Foundation. The poem’s contents, whilst crude, are otherwise mundane and do not possess any observable memetic or cognitohazardous effects. The following is a modern translation of the affected poem in question:

You tell me to do this,

He tells me to do that.

You're all bastards,

Go fuck your mother.

The primary anomalous property exhibited by SCP-001-PIG-EX is the global conformity of all individuals to ensure the complete truth of the poem's contents. Statistical research has shown fundamental alterations to the collective mindset of humanity to directly carry out all statements within the poem via actions which would have previously been considered divergent to standard human behavior. Reading or possessing knowledge of the poem is not required for subjects to be affected and it is estimated to have been influencing the population for several decades before the discovery of its true nature. Non-human, sapient individuals experience similar symptoms as humans, but appear to not be as strongly affected.

Specifically, the global conformity to the poem’s primary section has resulted in a tremendous increase in the rates of marriages leading to divorce, couples simply refusing to get married, affairs between individuals already within relationships, and intercourse without marriage. This has directly influenced the amount of "bastard" children within the world population. As these rates are steadily increasing, it is speculated that the entire world population will be considered bastards by the year 2326 if current trends compiled by Foundation statisticians remain accurate.

All of the aforementioned effects, despite referencing what were considered by Foundation statisticians to be abnormal global trends, were previously believed to be mundane. However, exhaustive research of these trends led to the discovery of SCP-001-PIG-EX.

SCP-001-PIG-EX-A collectively refers to a group of mechanical apparatuses constructed within the sub-basement of Area-001, prominently featuring several liquid holding tanks alongside other miscellaneous piping and machinery. The exact method through which SCP-001-PIG-EX-A functions remains unclear, but it remains certain that it requires both electricity and various thaumaturgical rituals to perform its primary functions. When not supplied electricity, SCP-001-PIG-EX-A will remain in a dormant state. If they are supplied sufficient energy, they will continue to remain inactive without a thaumaturgical ritual to guide it.

SCP-001-PIG-EX-A is capable of producing a limitless amount of augmented carbonated drink syrup, whose flavor can be modified per the specifications laid out by thaumaturgical rituals inspired by Erikeshan conceptual engineering. These rituals are also capable of anomalously ensuring continued brand loyalty via minute cognitohazardous effects gained by staring at a created beverage. All anomalous qualities gained by produced syrup and their drink byproducts are entirely untraceable. It is through utilization of SCP-001-PIG-EX-A and associated rituals that every "Coca-Cola" brand soft drink has been produced since the company’s inception.

Through rituals implanted within Coca-Cola, SCP-001-PIG-EX-A is capable of restricting the anomalous effects of SCP-001-PIG-EX on the world population.

HISTORY

FOUNDING OF COCA-COLA

Prior to the existence of the Foundation, SCP-001-PIG-EX-A was first discovered in the basement of a building within dilapidated ruins by followers of a new-age proto-Erikeshan movement in 1864, which would later develop into an early sect of GoI-871 ("The Children of the Scarlet King"). The original creators of SCP-001-PIG-EX-A remained unclear until later analysis showed the devices were estimated to be 3000+ years old, created by technology which suggested relation to GoI-004 ("The Church of the Broken God"). It is believed ancient Erikeshans found SCP-001-PIG-EX-A and proceeded to modify it for their own use, with the later movement considering it a holy site.

SCP-001-PIG-EX-A-1.

During the proto-Erikeshan occupation of the site later designated as Area-001, SCP-001-PIG-EX-A was used to produce drinks which were believed to have medicinal properties. However, several of its members began to theorize that the machines could be used for creating recreational beverages that could be sold for the benefit of the group. By this period, the group had developed a commune around the ruins due to their belief it was a holy site, with most of them not wanting an artifact they were utilizing for medicinal purposes to be used for the purpose of making money.

A particularly wealthy individual part of the movement named Robert Turner, later designated PoI-001-PIG, attempted to buy out SCP-001-PIG-EX-A from the rest of the commune. It should be noted that they did not legally own the land and this was simply an attempt at bribery to get them away from it. Most refused, leading to PoI-001-PIG eventually hiring a group of mercenaries to chase away the commune in 1866. After they had fled, he legally purchased the land, whose previous owners were ignorant to the presence of SCP-001-PIG-EX-A on their property, and set about attempting to form a business.

Within the ruins that housed SCP-001-PIG-EX-A, PoI-001-PIG discovered a significant number of carbonated drink recipes which could be created utilizing the machine, which he was able to translate via his copy of the Erikesh Codex. He began experimenting with different drink types until he eventually was able to develop the recipe for what would become Coca-Cola in 1874 as a combination of several drinks designed for wound remedies. The ritual to create this drink required a single primary ingredients: coco leaves. In the modern day, the Coca-Cola Company claims that the drink’s name came from the leaves, to which PoI-001-PIG corroborates this fact. Due to the effects of SCP-001-PIG-EX-A, the drinks fostered a faint memetic desire in a majority of subjects to want to purchase and drink more.

PoI-001-PIG proceeded to spend multiple years peddling his new soft drink to various high-profile investors within anomalous communities. The only confirmed investor who was interested in the drink was the current tsar of Russia, Alexander II, who is recorded as having been more interested in the anomalous methods used to create the drink rather than the drink itself. In an attempt to appease the tsar and make him more interested in the product, PoI-001-PIG used SCP-001-PIG-EX-A to augment a water spring within the country to grant youth and strength when drunken from, later designated as SCP-006. Alexander II appreciated the gift, but eventually refused to invest in Coca-Cola. PoI-001-PIG, notably, drank from SCP-006 prior to exiting Russia.

After his initial failure to secure investors, PoI-001-PIG eventually decided he would use his existing wealth to sell the drink on his own in 1886 within the United States. As Area-001 was located in the South, he began to market it there, developing a false narrative about a recovering Confederate veteran turned pharmacist, John Pemberton, having invented Coca-Cola to both protect his identity and inspire brand loyalty. He hoped that the "underdog story" of a recovering veteran who was involved in their side of the Civil War would work in his favor. He began selling the drink under different companies which would "conflict" with each other, further developing brand loyalty to which one an individual preferred over the rest.

By 1888, the popularity of Coca-Cola grew, but PoI-001-PIG had accidentally developed his false narrative of Pemberton in such a way that it would be considered unrealistic for him to begin exporting the drink on a larger scale. Fearing for his lie’s exposure, he developed a story in which Pemberton had died and another individual known as Asa Chandler had taken control of the company and eventually collapsed all other "competing" brands into one. By 1889, this control was "finalized". For public appearances, PoI-001-PIG hired an actor to pretend to be Chandler. In the modern day, this individual’s identity remains unclear.

By the 1940s, Coca-Cola was the largest anomalous company within the United States, notably beating out the Disney Corporation.

INITIAL DISCOVERY

The SCP Foundation began operation in 1938, starting as a smaller organization in the United States with little geopolitical sway. However, by 1950, their influence spread to the point they were now an intercontinental institution with significant political power.

John_Pemberton.jpg

Photo of individual alleged to be John Pemberton.

The anomalous nature of SCP-001-PIG-EX-A was known to the Foundation due to it being considered an "open secret" within several smaller anomalous communities at the time, but were unable to take any action due to their aforementioned lack of power before 1950. Eventually, contact with Coca-Cola was established by Foundation informants, who ordered them to cease and desist their activities against the Veil. PoI-001-PIG, recognizing the military capabilities of the Foundation, immediately made attempts to foster negotiations to ensure his continued use of SCP-001-PIG-EX-A for his company.

During initial negotiations with PoI-001-PIG, Foundation statisticians began to identify unusual trends which led to the discovery of SCP-001-PIG-EX. Despite their increase in military and political power, the organization was largely unprepared to deal with an anomaly of its nature. Sensing an opportunity for an olive branch, following a subsequent vote within the Overseer Council, the Foundation offered to allow the Coca-Cola Company to maintain usage of SCP-001-PIG-EX-A should they implant a memetic resistance to SCP-001-PIG-EX within all soft drinks they produce with it. PoI-001-PIG agreed to this offer, meeting with representatives of the Council in Boston, Massachusetts to sign the Boston Accords agreement, which outlined the exact nature of the negotiations between the two groups.

Following several months of experimentation, the SCP-001-PIG-EX memetic resistance was approved for use in Coca-Cola. After another month of modification to the primary rituals used with SCP-001-PIG-EX-A, the public began to consume Coca-Cola soft drinks which would allow them to stave off SCP-001-PIG-EX’s effects. During this period, all members of Foundation staff were required to drink at least one sip of a Coca-Cola soft drink in order to ensure they would not be affected. Subsequent observation of global trends proved the effectiveness of the solution, with SCP-001-PIG-EX’s visible effect on the population having been crippled.

Following the establishment of the Boston Accords, the SCP Foundation Pig Latin Branch was formed from all personnel actively assigned to SCP-001-PIG-EX due to a loophole in the treaty. Said loophole allowed Coca-Cola significantly close contact with only a single branch of the Foundation, but did not specify which was to be communicated with. This allows for all primary branches to not risk confidential information through said close contact with the Coca-Cola company, which represents a significant, albeit fairly mundane task.

After the containment of SCP-001-PIG-EX due to SCP-001-PIG-EX-A, the Pig Latin Branch remains as a smaller branch which typically receives anomalies deferred from other branches.

FILE COMMENTARY

MESSAGE FROM O5-6

The SCP Foundation was formed to Secure, Contain, and Protect. Since our founding, we’ve reached the apex of what an organization of our standing could achieve. We’ve contained God. We’ve killed God. I’m sure we’ve done some other things to him too.

So, what are the implications of the world’s most powerful organization having to use soda to stave off some anomaly formed from a terribly-written poem by a 20th century warlord? I mean, we probably could come up with another solution at some point, but what we have at the moment is the best we’ve got. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. What a possible second solution could be, I honestly cannot tell you.

However, what I can tell you is that ever since we’ve begun to deal with this whole thing, I’ve had so many people in my office ordering me around and telling me to do this and telling me to do that. It really gets on someone’s nerves after a while, doesn’t it? I think I really have to get all that anger out somewhere, and I’m going to use this file because no one can stop me.

I don’t know why all you bastards have begun bothering me with this, but to be quite honest, I don’t care. Consider this matter closed.
