Full name Ellie the Elephant[1] [2]
Species Elephant
First appearance Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! (1996)
Latest appearance Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (spirit cameo) (2018)

Ellie is an Animal Friend appearing in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! and Donkey Kong Land III . She is the first Animal Friend who is a female. She is treated as something of a substitute for Rambi in that they are both heavy mammals used as the first stage's Animal Buddy, but unlike Rambi's simple charging- and contact-based movements and attacks, Ellie involves more strategy due to her strengths being less obvious and more situational. Ellie has two unique characteristics, both involving her trunk. She has the ability to collect water into her trunk, including from a waterfall, and then fire it at enemies. She has a fear of mice, specifically Sneeks, which is a reference to the popular, albeit scientifically contested belief of elephants being negatively conscious towards mice in the real world. She can also take out stronger enemies like Krumples due to her weight. In addition, she can carry barrels with her trunk, and suck them towards her if they are out of reach by facing a barrel and holding Y Button.

History[edit ]

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble![edit ]

Bobbing Barrel Brawl
Ellie is required to use TNT Barrels to defeat some of the red Buzzes in Bobbing Barrel Brawl

Ellie is an ally in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!. She is first seen in Lakeside Limbo. She is trapped in an Ellie Crate near the end of the level, and Dixie and Kiddy Kong can optionally ride her through the level. Her next appearance is in Murky Mill, where the Kongs are transformed into her from an Ellie Barrel in most of the stage. Ellie's fear of mice is prominent, as she gets scared of Sneeks beneath the patches of light. She can only pass them by throwing a barrel at them. Ellie's third level appearance is in Bobbing Barrel Brawl, where she is transformed into for a majority of the level. Bobbing Barrel Brawl is the first level where Ellie can suck up water. The player can have her do so by pressing L Button or A Button and then fire it by pressing R Button or A Button. Ellie can also shoot water diagonally upwards by holding up while shooting. She can only carry up to seven drops of water, and the current amount is indicated from a meter at the bottom-right of the screen. Ellie cannot suck in water from a waterfall while she is blasting out from a Barrel Cannon. Ellie is required to utilize TNT Barrels in parts of Bobbing Barrel Brawl to defeat the Buzzes blocking the path. Ellie is also playable for a portion of Tracker Barrel Trek and fights the boss Squirt at Squirt's Showdown. The Kongs can ride on Ellie for a brief portion of Pot Hole Panic. Ellie's seventh and final level appearance is in Stampede Sprint, where after encountering three Sneeks, she gets a large scare and runs through the level uncontrollably.

In the remake, some of Ellie's sound effects were reused from remakes of the two previous Donkey Kong Country games. She also makes the loud noise of an elephant when scared by a Sneek.

Donkey Kong Land III[edit ]

Ellie is an ally in Donkey Kong Land III. Her limited water supply was bumped up to unlimited, and she can shoot water regardless of which stage she is in. Ellie cannot drag barrels with her trunk and does not have a fear of Sneeks. She appears in Footloose Falls, Rickety Rapids, and Rainforest Rumble only. In Donkey Kong GB: Dinky Kong & Dixie Kong, Ellie's sprite uses a purple palette.

Donkey Konga series[edit ]

Ellie reappears in Donkey Konga as a background character in two modes. In "Street Performance", she appears at the bottom-left corner of the screen, next to the coin counter. In "Jam Session", she and the other background characters, including King K. Rool, Cranky Kong, Diddy Kong, Rambi and the Banana Birds, appear on the bottom screen while the player performs a "jam session". Ellie was relocated to the bottom-right corner.

A snow statue of Ellie is seen in Donkey Konga 2 . It appears next to a snowman wearing a tie with the DK emblem in the Rumbly Peak background. Her artwork can appear in Freestyle Zone while the player plays the DK Bongos.

Artwork of Ellie is seen in the corner of a window in the Snowman (Fuyu) background from Donkey Konga 3 , and her artwork can also appear again in Freestyle Zone.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit ]

Ellie appears as a spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate .

Donkey Kong Racing[edit ]

The ending of the E3 2001 trailer for Donkey Kong Racing showed Kiddy riding on Ellie, suggesting she would have been a rideable Animal Buddy.
