Idea: LocalGeocoding API

Posted by patrickd on July 25, 2011 at 9:52pm

It does what a geocoder has to do: Translate address information to lats and longs.

But it will do that on your own box, in your database: no request restrictions.. no dependency on a foreeign service.. location autocompletition.. ?

For shure we can't store the worlds address data like google does but we can do it local:
Using the possiblity to select and export map data from OSM (http://www.openstreetmap.org/export) and import it into our local database using it for geocoding matters.

It has assets and drawbacks; but also essential advantages for some special cases.

Building the ultimate street address management system and geocoding module for Drupal 7

Posted by Adam S on March 24, 2011 at 7:33pm

There are several modules in Drupal 6 that manage addresses, geocoding and geospatial points. I would like to see a discussion about them and their better parts to base the construction of an address management system in Drupal 7. I am pulling comments I made in the Address Field module for Drupal 7 module issue queue as I originally wanted to express the ideas here in the the Geolocation Group to make them available to a wider audience. The original thread is at http://drupal.org/node/1093392#comment-4256540.

Using OpenLayers Geocoder to auto-fill-in address fields

Posted by rootwork on February 9, 2011 at 9:25pm

Hi, all. I've just started playing around with the OpenLayers Geocoder module to input locations, and one of its features is auto-filling-in address fields. You can read more about that in the announcement of OpenLayers.

Currently, however, OpenLayers Geocoder won't auto-fill-in address fields located in either location.module (#1030432) or addresses.module (#910308).

Drupal 7 solutions for mapping?

Posted by tgeller on November 24, 2010 at 12:59am

Could maintainers (et al.) post their current plans for Drupal 7 versions of mapping solutions? I haven't seen anything in drupal.org/project/modules yet. Thanks!

OpenBlock Geolocation Hack-a-thon at MIT Media Lab

Posted by morisy on October 22, 2010 at 7:58pm

MIT and Hacks/Hackers are hosting an OpenBlock hack-a-thon Oct. 30 at noon. Why should local Drupalists care?

OpenBlock by itself is an interesting news aggregator, but it's various components, which can be de-coupled, could be very cool, doing everything from auto-geotagging content, very customizable mapping, and much more. Tapping into these components could help a lot of Drupal sites I've seen.

RSVP here for the meetup:

Understanding the Location "name" and "additional" fields

Posted by tolland76 on February 8, 2010 at 8:52am

I am a little confused about the used of the various fields that the "location" module employs

Am I right in guessing that "name" mean the house/building number or name, and additional, is like the sub-postal area, locality...?

Thanks,

T

Map displaying all events

Posted by vesapalmu on October 9, 2009 at 4:46pm

Now that g.d.o has been upgraded to D6 is there any chance of creating a location based map for all events? Something like the map in http://central.wordcamp.org/ but with some views filtering options would be very cool way of browsing events and quite easy to implement. We are starting to have so many Drupal events every year that it's difficult to keep track on what's going on. Map with filtering by event type and dates would be a huge improvement on usability.

Finding places in a map (geocoding)

Posted by jcampo on January 10, 2009 at 12:22pm

I have users in one side and events and links in the other.

I do no expect Users having trouble finding their location in a map. ;)

However, as an administrator, when I add locations for events or other links, since I do not always know where those places are located, I ended up having my editing page and a google maps page open at the same time and going back and forth between them in order to add a marker.

I figure out a shorcut for this problem until geocoding finally works (perhaps I am doing something wrong, but I do not see geolocation working yet).
