Sudan-Egypt Relations Amid Shifting Regional Dynamics in the Middle East (2018_2_40_008)
概要
In this report, we examine the impact of geopolitical shifts in Sudan-Egypt relations in an increasingly fragmented regional order in the Middle East. These two countries have survived state collapse but have seen increasing tension between them, posing risk to political stability and representing a new level of conflict that could create a threat to regional stability. Our assessment of Sudan-Egypt relations focuses on three sources of conflict: (1) the Egyptian-Sudanese stances on the Gulf crisis between Qatar and its Gulf neighbors on one hand and Saudi-Iranian rivalry in the region on the other; (2) the different Egyptian-Sudanese positions vis-à-vis the Muslim Brotherhood movement and opposition groups fighting their respective governments in Sudan and Egypt as well as their support for rival factions in Libya; and (3) the conflict over the Hala’ib and Shalateen triangle, water-related politics in the Nile River basin, and the rising tensions between Sudan and Egypt over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
