Nationalism and Local Communities: Case Studies of the Maghrib during the Colonial Period(2017_2_40_001)

概要

This project aims to deepen our understanding of the development of nationalism in the Middle East and North Africa by examining the historical interactions among the different levels of belonging. Our studies center on the Maghrib countries of the colonial period, where subnational (tribal, regional, and ethnic), national, and supranational (Arabic, Islamic) levels of belonging have been interwoven. By focusing on a particular community or region characterized by a set of subnational identities, we study their transformation throughout the colonial period and their relationship with nationalism.
