Life at The Univ. of Tokyo
The School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo, have an Office of International Cooperation and Exchange (OICE) to support international students.
OICE office provides great support and service to facilitate your academic life at The University of Tokyo, such as Residence in Japan, Insurance, Information of Campus Facilities.

For residence in Tokyo, some Student dormitories, Tokyo International Exchange Center at Odaiba, and UT Engineering Kotesashi Apartment that are managed by the Univerity of Tokyo are available.
Information about private apartments provided by landlords and real estate agents is available on the notice board and files at the Student Exchange Division. The apartment and room-to-let section at the University of Tokyo CO-OP Gotenshita store, located by the stairs at the entrance of Gotenshita Memorial Arena, also has some information for international students. International Liaison Office

Currently, about 2,000 international students from about 80 countries are studying in the University of Tokyo. To help them lead a comfortable and successful campus life, each department sets up an international office respectively.
International Liaison Office of School of Science supports about 60 international students enrolled in this School. We deal with matters such as admission, enrollment registration, an arrival orientation followed by a campus tour, arrangements of scholarships, housing, and visa. We also provide advice on students' lives and organize various intercultural events to enhance mutual understanding. Japanese language classes at three levels are also available.

Application for accommodation for international students
There are several types of residences available to International Students. The accommodations, however, are limited and cannot be offered to all students.
The application period is around the end of January (for students enrolling in April) and the end of June (for those enrolling in October). Application forms must be signed by your supervisory professor before submission to the ILO.

Scholarship

To concentrate on your study, it is important to have a sufficient budget for the student life. The living cost is high in Tokyo. The average expenditure will be about 130,000 to 140,000 yen a month, provided that you rent a private room in Tokyo. You can obtain a work permit after your arrival, but the working hours are limited under the law. Therefore, we recommend you to be well prepared for your finance.
Please refer to the scholarships below. Most of the scholarships are applicable after enrollment, however, they are very competitive. There are few scholarships for Kenkyu-sei (research students). Except for Embassy recommended MEXT Scholarship, all scholarship information are provided at International Liaison Office.

Admission into the University
To enroll in the University, you need to obtain a "College Student" visa. ILO will mail the necessary documents for the visa application. Please apply for the visa at the Embassy or Consulate of Japan when these documents arrive.
The validity will be one year for research students and two years for Regular course Undergraduate, Master's and Doctoral Students.
