The University of Tokyo Global COE Chemistry Innovation through Cooperation of Science and Engineering

Research and education activity plan

The project’s core activities focus on strong promotion of global-level academic research while advancing education and talents development utilizing the field of research.

Research activity

The four chemistry-related Departments of the University of Tokyo straddle the School of Science and the School of Engineering and cover almost all chemical disciplines in the "core chemical research area," including physical chemistry, organic and macromolecular chemistry, inorganic chemistry and analytical chemistry, the "cross-disciplinary research area" including recently rapidly progressing areas such as nano-science, materials science, and chemical biology, and the "society and future challenges research area," including the solution of unsolved questions in modern natural science and the solution of modern societal problems we are facing. Out of these areas, we plan to produce good results to contribute to enhancement of human knowledge. We also focus on the solution of global problems through implementation of construction of nano-chemistry integration by self assembling of metal complexes and molecular clusters, realization of chemical synthesis with high efficiency and low environmental load, and development of photo-catalysts and ultrafast spectroscopy.

Education activities

Out of a total of 32 full professors within the four chemistry-related Departments of the science and engineering Schools taking charge in undergraduate and graduate chemical education at the University of Tokyo, 22 full professors take the lead in nurturing first-class young talents capable of flourishing on the international scene equipped with both a "scientific mind of pursuing universal truth" and an "engineering mind aiming at development of technology". Heretofore, it has been thought a mission of the School of Science to nurture scientists who pursue truth and a mission of the School of Engineering to nurture engineers who support industry. However, since the world has become globalized and is becoming more and more complicated in structure, conventional classification is no longer appropriate to nurture the required talents. The range of chemistry has expanded extraordinarily beyond conventional areas to life, medicine, materials, machines, electricity, environment, energy, outer space, etc. On the other hand, since this university plays a large role in regard to nurturing human resources in general in this country, we are expected to nurture young talents learned not only in conventional chemistry but also in life, materials, environment, etc. From such a point of view, the COE project aims to nurture "scientists capable of seeing society and the future", "engineers who strive to investigate truth," and further well-internationalized talents that can act in fields beyond the framework of chemistry. In order for this country to exert international leadership, applying the national policy of world leader in science and technology, we think it necessary to nurture young talents rich in "foresight and internationalism" besides having "sound logicality and rationality" and "abundant individuality and keen sensibility."
