Item #: SCP-CN-2764
Object Class: Pending
Special Containment Procedures: It is believed that since the 12th century CE, there is no way to achieve the criteria necessary to activate the SCP-CN-2764 anomaly. It is currently unknown whether its anomalous properties themselves remain, but research into this question has been deemed of low priority, and the Object Class is to remain as Pending. In view of SCP-CN-2764's wide distribution both within and behind the Veil, a full containment operation will prove difficult; as such, containment operations are restricted to the long-term monitoring of selected large-scale collections.
SCP-CN-2764.
Description: SCP-CN-2764 refers to the chemical element with the atomic number 79 (that is, gold / Au) in its pure form and its derivatives. The anomalous properties of the object are that when a European dragon (Pogona pinnatus) remains in constant contact with a large quantity of SCP-CN-2764, it will gain an anomalous ability to counteract gravity. This allows this species to fly even with large bodies and smaller, weaker wings. It is thought that European dragons affected by SCP-CN-2764's effects became flying dragons (Pogona pinnatus subsp. corusco)
Compared to the European dragon, the flying dragon has more mobility and a greater ability to capture prey. As such, over thousands of years of evolution, the vast majority of European dragons adopted the habit of collecting large quantities of golden objects and piling them up in their nests. This is one of the sources of the "dragon seeking treasure" legends.
An artistic depiction of the European dragon. Its ability to breathe fire has been deemed to be an artistic exaggeration.
Around the 10th century CE, the practice of dragon-slaying became popular. Human warriors formed dragon-slaying parties in the name of protecting their homes, gaining fame, or more likely collecting the valuable gold collected by SCP-CN-2764-A instances, and hunted European dragons throughout the Eurasian continent. The European dragon, despite its depiction in popular legend, does not possess significant thaumaturgical power, nor enough physical strength to resist human assault. Combined with its lifespan far greater than that of humans, this meant that the overall population of the European dragon remained small throughout recorded history. As a result of these factors, the European dragon, including SCP-CN-2764-A, was hunted to extinction in merely 200 years.
No organisms other than European dragons have been found that are capable of activating SCP-CN-2764's anomalous properties.
Item #: SCP-CN-2764
Object Class (Updated): Keter
Special Containment Procedures (Updated): Prior containment procedures have been rendered meaningless.
The constant surveillance of SCP-CN-2764-B is of highest priority. In view of its prominence in the internet services industry, direct containment is infeasible.
Description (Updated): SCP-CN-2764's anomalous properties have expanded to another form of value — that is, currency. The specific cause of this change is unknown, but as of 2009, all currency has been found to be a minor source of Akiva radiation; as such, the Department of Tactical Theology has been enlisted to assist with SCP-CN-2764-δ containment.
SCP-CN-2764-B.
The effect of SCP-CN-2764-δ on organisms is similar to the original effect of SCP-CN-2764. Organisms possessing large quantities of SCP-CN-2764-δ will gain a strong interest in flight and in extreme cases spaceflight. In addition, the effects of SCP-CN-2764-δ are no longer limited to European dragons, and can now affect various species, including humans (Homo sapiens).
The human subject posing the greatest threat to the Veil, SCP-CN-2764-B, has been identified. This instance is expending its resources to develop commercial private spaceflight. As it is unknown whether allowing the instance to continue this development will lead to further anomalous effects, technological sabotage of its company's spacecraft is under consideration.
