Special Containment Procedures: SCP-CN-161 has been stored in an Standard Inanimate Object Locker in Site-CN-08. Any use of SCP-CN-161 requires Level 3 clearance.

Description: SCP-CN-161 is a machine similar in structure and identical in operation to a Xerox Model A copier. The exterior of SCP-CN-161 is engraved with four fractal images, each located on one of the machine's four vertical sides; these images have been identified as Julia sets. SCP-CN-161 can be disassembled and reassembled; however, replacing any part of the object besides the ink cartridge will inhibit the anomalous properties of the object until restored.

SCP-CN-161's anomalous properties manifest when the object is used to copy a document. The textual content and images contained within the document will be altered to fit the user's intelligence level and language ability. These alterations preserve objectivity and do not change the meaning of the text; they can take the form of translation from one language to another, adding explanations of specialized terminology, indicating the origin and meaning of quotations, adding visual explanations, adding background information, and changing the text to a more common register. With regards to handwritten documents and original works of visual art, SCP-CN-161 can determine the author's intention and can subjectively reflect this in the copied document, typically by circling and adding explanatory notes to regions of the image. See Experiment Report CN-161-B. SCP-CN-161 does not have any this effect on photographs, copies, or printed versions of artworks.
