SCP-CN-1313-1 and SCP-CN-1313-2 are to be contained in Site-CN-618's High-Value Anomalous Object Containment Wing. SCP-CN-1313-3 is to be contained in the seven-layered box in the Ashoka Pagoda at the center of the underground structure beneath the original Famen Temple pagoda. The straight-line distance between SCP-CN-1313-1 and SCP-CN-1313-2 is not to exceed 25 m, and the straight-line distance between either SCP-CN-1313-1 or SCP-CN-1313-2 and SCP-CN-1313-3 is not to exceed 200m.

Containment personnel are to inspect the containment wing, as well as the Abnormality Institute-era containment spell surrounding Famen Temple for defects. Any changes in the structures or garden within the range of the spell must be approved by the Religious Artefacts Department and Archaeological Department prior to beginning of works. Any damage or interference with the spell must be repaired to its original condition within 7 days.

The internal organizations of Site-CN-618 are to hold at least one Buddhist ritual every year, which must be attended by 108 devout senior Buddhist monks. The ritual must last at least seven days, and involve at least 504 minutes of chanting sutras.

Every year, at least 500,000 non-anomalous civilians that have passed vetting are to visit the object. If by the end of the third quarter the number of visitors has not reached the requirement, Foundation front company Shaanxi Cooperative Passengers Travel Agency will offer discounted or, if necessary, free travel packages to ensure the number of visitors reaches the required amount.

It is forbidden for any personnel to view SCP-CN-1313-3 for more than 500 minutes at a time. The limits of SCP-CN-1313-3's size and mass changes may only be recorded by at least four personnel at a time, who are to use handwritten notes on mutually isolated paper media. Relevant printed media are to be placed in a fireproof, blastproof safe secured by three layers of mechanical password locks. Under no circumstances are the above limits to be recorded digitally or on non-paper media. It is forbidden to use SCP-CN-1313-1 in testing with other anomalous entities.

SCP-CN-1313-1, SCP-CN-1313-2 and SCP-CN-1313-3 are to be contained underground in a specially designed exhibition at Site-CN-618's F-H-D containment wing. The straight-line distance between SCP-CN-1313-1 and SCP-CN-1313-2 is not to exceed 25 m, and SCP-CN-1313-3 is not to be removed from its wall alcove.

Containment personnel are to inspect the completeness of the three horizontal and three vertical Buddhist spell arrays between Floors 1 and 3 of the containment zone, as well as the spell on the surrounding statue base on a daily basis. Any alterations to the structure or decoration of buildings, as well as arrangement or type of religious artifacts, within the range of these spells must be approved by the Religious Artefacts Department and Archaeological Department prior to beginning of works. Any damage or interference with the spells must be repaired to its original condition within 7 days.

Every year, at least one Buddhist ritual must be held in the F-H-D containment wing or the plaza in front of it, which must be attended by 108 devout senior Buddhist monks. The ritual must last at least seven days, and involve at least 504 minutes of chanting sutras.

Every year, at least 1,000,000 non-anomalous civilians that have passed vetting are to visit the object.

Personnel who maintain direct visual contact with SCP-CN-1313-3 for more than 6 hours and refuse to leave are to be detained by Foundation security personnel and administered Class A amnestics. Measurements and recording of the limits of SCP-CN-1313-3's regular size and mass changes, and only one set of four paper records are to be maintained. All other records involving two or more of these limits are to be deleted by a set of six independent AICs, one for each pair of values. Physical records of these values are to be immediately erased or, barring that, destroyed. Under no circumstances are the four sets of values to be entered into a computer system or recorded on any medium other than paper. Cross-testing using SCP-CN-1313-1 is prohibited.

If the Site's AIC observes that SCP-CN-1313-1 has autonomously activated, the 108 Ramsay-Ducasse Ethereal Energy and Akiva Radiation Control Devices located in a sphere around the Containment Wing are to be activated to prevent the further expansion of the object's anomalous effect. At least 4 members of MTF-庚午-42 ("Misty Shadows Dreaming Flowers") are to enter the Containment Wing and are to attempt to terminate the activation event within 24 hours. Following this, an additional team of personnel is to be dispatched to the object's effective area every 12 hours. If after 24 hours the operation is still unsuccessful, a Portable Anomalous Entity Emergency Dispersal Notice will be automatically dispatched to all Foundation sites in the provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang and the municipality of Shanghai. Owing to the fact that the energy consumption of the Ramsay-Ducasse device arrays grow according to a geometric series after activation, the Site's emergency nuclear fusion reactors and extradimensional energy story cubes are only capable of sustaining their operation for less than 24 hours. After 24 hours, all Foundation sites in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai must supply power to the Site to maintain containment; after 48 hours, all power generation in the entirety of East China is required to be directed through the national Foundation/civilian power grid; and after 72 hours the anomalous extraction of energy directly from the Sun may be required. If the operation has not successfully stopped the activation of the object after 72 hours, the Chinese Branch Central Command AIC Cangfei is to remotely take over operations of the Site's facilities and activate protocol "Pipe Dream": A K-Class Event Warning is to be sent to the O5 Council and all Foundation sites that may be affected. A demonic spatiotemporal containment device located in the Shanghai World Financial Center Plaza (as of May 2016, this device has been moved to the Shanghai Central Plaza, which has a more spatially stable location due to the use of [DATA EXPUNGED] technological design) to lock down a region of spherical space within a 12.3 km radius. As there is no way to ensure the safety of personnel and materials within the locked-down area, prior to the demonic device being damaged or being engulfed, civilians, their mobile property, Foundation personnel, and all movable anomalies are to be evacuated as soon as possible, and all Foundation personnel who have undergone hallucination resistance are permitted to enter the object's effective range to assist in deactivating the object. After 108 hours, the Ramsay-Ducasse array will fail from overloading. If at this point the operation is still unsuccessful or at least 90% of mobile anomalies are not removed from the effective range before the failure of the demonic device, an XK/YK-Class "Endless Dream" event warning is to be issued to all Foundation facilities and Groups of Interest through remaining Chinese Branch AICs. Based on research done by the Pataphysics Department, an "Endless Dream" event begins from the location of occurrence, and involves the "breaking" of the "wall" between "reality" and "dreams". Following this, the "wall" between narrative layers will also slowly collapse, ending in the entire known universe, the entire narrative layers, and possibly some higher/lower narrative layers, narrative chunks or the entire narrative ladder collapsing into the same "dream" in which one is incapable of distinguishing between "existence and nonexistence" or "logic and super-logic".

Extant documents indicate that SCP-CN-1313-1 possesses various specific contact requirements, including the reading of a certain volume and type of Buddhist text, a deep personal understanding of Buddhist thought, and/or a strong belief in Buddhism. In tests, Class D personnel not meeting these contact requirements have died within 0.36 s, their bodies completely disappearing after 7.2 s. When a human subject meeting the corresponding requirements ("the user") touches SCP-CN-1313-1, it will enter an artificial active state and manifest a set of monk's robes of unknown material on the user's body, as well as a set of prayer beads appearing to be made of wood around their wrist or ankle.

While artificially activated, SCP-CN-1313-1 presents various anomalous effects, whose activation and concrete effects, including area of effect, are decided by the user's wishes and willpower. The following is an incomplete list of known effects:

• 1. When SCP-CN-1313-1 is used to touch an anomalous organism or remains in it's vicinity for more than 14.4 s, the anomalous organism's original range of motion will become limited, and will begin to burn after 7.2 s. After a varying period of time, the entity will be reduced to ashes, which disappear after being scattered by an unknown wind. Incorporeal entities will rapidly demanifest and be neutralized after entering the object's area of effect.

• 2. Touching a non-living anomalous object with SCP-CN-1313-1 will cause the object to visibly begin decaying, and will invariably lead to the object disappearing after 48 minutes.

• 3. Non-anomalous objects and organisms and composites of such are not affected by the object.

• 4. The robes and prayer beads appear to be seemingly indestructible, and even if parts are damaged they will regenerate within a few nanoseconds. The robes and prayer beads are invariably manifested upon activating SCP-CN-1313-1; the user has no control over this effect. Any attempts to harm the user physically or mentally fail while the robes and prayer beads remain intact. However, another person fulfilling the contact requirements can take SCP-CN-1313-1 from the user's hands and bring its wheel within 19.8936 m of SCP-CN-1313-3 to deactivate it.

• 5. The gold material at the tip of SCP-CN-1313-1 can produce particle flows composed of neutrinos, tachyons and other unknown particles. The tachyon decay produces directed beams of light visible to the naked eye that have the same effects on anomalous entities as direct contact, regardless of distance or form.

• 6. SCP-CN-1313-1 appears to be able to cause mental effects on human subjects in it's radius, causing them to more easily understand the concepts described in Buddhist texts and/or enter a dream described afterward as "extremely realistic".

ETHICS COMMITTEE WARNING: Following the loss of SCP-CN-1313-2, artificial activation of SCP-CN-1313-1 has become difficult to control. Experimentation and observation shows that approximately 91% of subjects who have previously activated the object have turned to ashes between 3 days and 3 years after the fact, and the remaining 9% have experienced a period of no more than 48 minutes in which their bodies released a large amount of multispectral photons, losing mass to the point of disappearance, between 7.2 seconds and 3 years after the fact. In some Buddhist sutras and ancient folklore, the "rainbow body" phenomenon may be a subjective description of the effects of SCP-CN-1313-1 or something similar on anomalous entities. Some former users do not completely turn into multispectral photons, and their remains continuously emit high-density gamma radiation. As such, as of 11 January 2013, Class C and higher personnel, as well as members of Buddhist GoIs, are prohibited from touching the object to prevent further losses.

When the straight-line distance between SCP-CN-1313-1 and SCP-CN-1313-3 exceeds 28.7352 m for a certain total amount of time or SCP-CN-1313-3's Akiva radiation field declines while "the stars align at a certain position"/a specific range of interstellar-scale reality reconstruction events occurs, SCP-CN-1313-1 will enter its spontaneous activation state. Extant records indicate that in the beginning stages of this event, the object's outer layer will become transparent at a rate visible to the human eye, and its six-dimensional crystal structure will be exposed. In the ten seconds following this, the six-dimensional layer will warp due to an unknown internal effect, appearing as a collapsing projection effect to three-dimensional observers. Based on real-time Site security footage, once this distortion stabilizes, the object's shape will become an extradimensional rift that cannot be accurately described using language.

Additionally, a high-intensity Akiva radiation field will begin expanding from the object. Any anomalous entities caught in this field will experience effects similar to Effects 1 and 2 of artificial activation, except that the rate of decay/turning to ashes/becoming transparent is noticeably higher. All non-anomalous sapient entities in this range will enter a semi-conscious "dream" environment that varies between individuals. The rate of expansion is inversely correlated with the number of non-anomalous sapient entities in its range, and directly correlated with the number of entities neutralized or the degree of their anomalous properties. As such, the Department of Tactical Theology theorizes that once the object consumes a dormant Apex-tier pluripotent entity or another entity it interprets as "high-energy", the number of non-anomalous sapient entities required to mitigate or suppress its effect will increase rapidly by several orders of magnitude, very likely leading to an unavoidable K-class scenario.

Survivors of the "dream" environment report that as the time spent "in the dream" increases, objects within the "dream" will appear more and more realistic, the initial "beautiful, indulgent pleasant dream" slowly becoming a "nightmare", such as the environment, including the "three celestial lights of the sun, moon and stars'' slowly becoming dark, tinted red, or other colors with negative associations for the affected person, and various objects appearing to be completely harmless slowly becoming full of hostility. Cadavers of personnel who died during an activation event show wounds corresponding to the "death" they experienced in the dream.

In addition, historical documentation of the object and functional analysis of the object's activation incidents indicates that if in a single solar year, the number of non-anomalous sapient entities (primarily civilians) active within 12.3 km for a significant period of time or making direct visual contact with the object exceeds a certain amount, the chance of activation events occurring and the time required to suppress activation events significantly decreases. Another measure, which has less effect but has also been useful in containment, is the participation of a certain number of devout, learned Buddhists in a ritual activity. If the length of the activity (especially the time spent reciting sutras) is sufficient, these rituals will increase the stability and intensity of the radiation field produced by SCP-CN-1313-3, thereby improving the inhibitory and stabilizing effects on SCP-CN-1313-1.

Only one means of ending a spontaneous activation event is known: an affected non-anomalous sapient entity must activate certain specified "nodes/beacons". As the radius of effect exceeds certain thresholds, the number of "nodes" required to stop the activation increases. Any affected individual's active or passive action has a chance of touching and activating a "node"; as such, this is another reason the object is contained in a densely populated area.

SCP-CN-1313-2 is an "equivalent radiation enhancer" created in the early Tang dynasty era by the Abnormality Institute and the Chinese Yogachara sect. When the object is within 28.7352 m of both SCP-CN-1313-1 and SCP-CN-1313-3, it heavily amplifies the Akiva radiation produced by SCP-CN-1313-3, thereby increasing the effectiveness of it's suppression of SCP-CN-1313-1. If SCP-CN-1313-1 has been artificially activated, the user using/wearing SCP-CN-1313-2 will have a significantly stronger will. If under these circumstances another human is holding SCP-CN-1313-2 and located within 28.7352 m, they will enter a thaumaturgically induced "telepathy"-like "empathic" state with the user of SCP-CN-1313-1, and through their will can to a certain degree influence the actions of the user of SCP-CN-1313-1. In all tests with SCP-CN-1313-2, none of the personnel participating in the test experienced the "turning to ash" or "rainbow body" reactions even after 10 years of continued observation. All personnel who died affter these tests died from reasons unrelated to the object.

SCP-CN-1313-3's Akiva radiation field has been proven through testing to be harmless against all non-hostile entities. Personnel within a 221.04 m radius of the object experience a "gratifying", "joyful", "satisfying" feeling, which psychological testing has shown results in an increase in stress tolerance and compliance indices. Personnel maintaining direct visual contact or remaining within 28.7352 m (these acts are referred to as "contact" with the object) will experience rapid relief of physical, mental and psychological ailments, and prolonged contact may completely cure certain conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder. This effect is particularly pronounced in people with extensive knowledge about Buddhist teachings and ideas, and is moderately effective on people of other faiths, while non-religious people such as atheists require relatively extended "contact" to experience its effects. Personnel maintaining contact with the object for an extended period of time experience a state described as "zen", "peace", or "transcendence", in which their need for food and drink is drastically reduced. This kind of "contact" appears to be subconsciously addictive, and as subjects spend more time in "contact" with the object, they become less and less willing to stop "contact". Some affected personnel stated that even after cessation of "contact", they could still "mentally visualize" the object to obtain a certain degree of "pleasure", or even visualize the image of Buddha in their minds.

However, personnel maintaining "contact" with the object for more than 504 minutes will invariably gain an understanding of and attempt to convey the object's four infohazardous parameters, leading to irreversible brain death. As such, personnel are discouraged from spending more than 3 hours in "contact" with the object, and personnel spending more than 5 hours in "contact" should be forcibly removed. Viewing images, video and artistic depictions of the object elicited "joy", "awe" or "respect" from some subjects, but most subjects did not react unusually to the depictions of the object.

Based on records left behind by the Abnormality Institute, the staff first manifested in the second year of Zhenguan (628 CE), and was first sealed in the underground chamber of Famen Temple in Fufeng County, Shaanxi alongside several other anomalous items including SCP-CN-1313-2 and SCP-CN-1313-3 in the 22nd year of Zhenguan. Following this, in several "Welcoming the Buddha's Bone" events, it moved between Famen Temple and Chang'an. Up until the fifteenth year of Xiantong (874 CE), the three SCP-CN-1313 objects and thousands of other anomalous objects were sealed in the underground chamber of Famen Temple for long-term containment. However, a simultaneous containment breach of SCP-CN-████, Artifact ███ and SCP-2101 near midnight on the twelfth day of the twelfth month of the thirty-fourth year of Jiajing (February 2, 1556), leading to a large-scale earthquake and its aftershocks, causing the collapse of the thirteen-storied pagoda at Famen Temple jointly used as a containment facility by the Abnormality Institute and the Yogachara sect; however, the underground spells and the interior of the underground chamber remained completely intact. The pagoda at Famen Temple was repeatedly rebuilt over the following years, up until its collapse in 1981 due to SCP-CN-████ breaching containment. The Archaeological Department arrived at the scene shortly after under the guise of members of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' Institute of Archaeology, the Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology, and investigation and recovery teams from the the Shaanxi Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau, and did not detect any abnormal EVE radiation or Akiva radiation. As such, the Chinese Branch Management Committee initially settled on the direction of "maintaining the current appearance, containing the object at its original location, and separately researching". In May 1987, during the final stages of cleanup in accordance with documents left behind by the Abnormality Institute, the object was discovered among the sixth round of anomalous objects in a hidden alcove on the north side of the underground chamber, and was contained in accordance with the recorded containment methods left behind by the Abnormality Institute alongside SCP-CN-1313-2 and SCP-CN-1313-3 in Site-CN-618, publicly the Shaanxi Provincial Famen Temple Museum.

In 2006, as the original spells were gradually fading and estimated to lose effectiveness in the next █ to ██ years, and in order to maintain the required environment for containment, the Foundation's front company, Shaanxi Famen Temple Cultural Scenic Area Project Construction Co. Ltd., with the help of various Buddhist Groups of Interest, expanded Site-CN-618 under the guise of constructing the New Famen Temple and encouraging the development of local tourism and Buddhist cultural exhcange.

In April 2009, the New Famen Temple's primary aboveground containment structure, the "Namaste Dagoba", was completed, and following this the Foundation and the Buddhist Association held a ceremony on the morning of 9 May to "inaugurate the Namaste Dagoba and enshrine the Buddha's Finger Bone relic", in order to call upon figures in the global Buddhist community to assist in the strengthened containment procedures. The hundreds of thousands of non-anomalous civilians visiting the site reduced the risk of a potential containment breach to controllable levels.

On ██ June and █ July 2009, Site-CN-618 was attacked on two separate occasions by armed personnel disguised as tour groups. While Foundation security personnel and supporting forces from the region successfully quelled the attacks, the first attack saw the destruction of the horizontal-vertical Tryadhva Buddha spell used to maintain the stability of SCP-CN-1313-1 and contain the Akiva radiation produced by SCP-CN-1313-3, and the second attack saw the loss of SCP-CN-1313-2. Followup investigation indicated that the attacks were carried out by members of the Serpent's Hand, with participation from MC&D personnel.

Following this, in view of SCP-CN-1313-3's containment safety, Site-CN-618 management independently moved it back the underground chamber, which was protected by the original spells set by the Abnormality Institute, without contacting higher-ups. This led to the distance between SCP-CN-1313-1 and SCP-CN-1313-3 exceeding 600 m, eventually resulting in SCP-CN-1313-1's anomalous effects occurring on a large scale on December ██, 2012 when celestial objects in the Solar System aligned. [DATA EXPUNGED] phenomena occurred within a 1230 km, with an estimated ███ million people and an unknown number of anomalous objects/entities being affected. This incident was designated SCP-CN-1313-Ω-A. Following the incident, and the Chinese Branch Management Committee decided following discussion to reclassify the object as Keter, and prepare to transfer the object to a more suitable containment site.

On 7 January 2013, following the cross-analysis by Chinese Branch Central Command AICs Cangfei and Xuanxi, Site-CN-34, located in Shanghai's city center, a densely populated area with more than 10 million people within a 12.3 km radius, was selected as the new containment site for the object. On 11 January, SCP-CN-1313-1 and SCP-CN-1313-3 were formally transferred to Site-CN-34 for containment, and containment procedures were adjusted to take into account the situation in the area. Highly accurate replicas of SCP-CN-1313-1, SCP-CN-1313-2 and SCP-CN-1313-3 have been contained in the original containment wing of Site-CN-618 for continued civilian viewing. In addition, every year, several open Buddhist festivals are to take place to maintain the Veil Protocol and provide a source of income for Site-CN-618.

While investigating and attempting to end the object's spontaneous activation state, the Foundation interviewed agents who had entered the "dream" and successfully exited (whether actively or passively) in order to better understand the internal structure of the "dream" and the pattern of occurrence of the "nodes", as well as to decide whether to include the agent in question in MTF-庚午-42 ("Misty Shadows Dreaming Flowers"). Dr. Ruaith: First, please describe the scene when you initially entered the "dream".

Agent Evelyn: Alright. At first, I was in a place that looked like a futuristic city, but was still a Foundation site. Around me were nothing but giant glass windows and towers filled with plants. There were a lot of geometric shapes and lotus flowers floating in the sky, as if they were some form of transportation, like an elevator. The site's interior… 90% of the areas I saw were rest and relaxation facilities, and nobody was working.

Dr. Ruaith: And in that scene, what were you and the instances you saw doing?

Agent Evelyn: There, nobody needed to work, because you could get whatever you wanted. If you want water, a cup of water just appears in your hand. By that same logic, whatever you didn't want would disappear, so there were no anomalies to contain. Most of the people I saw were sleeping in beds made of plants. There were a lot of people in the cafeterias, too, drinking from fountains and eating food brought by flowing streams. You could eat until you didn't want to any more, and you wouldn't feel that you were too full.

Dr. Ruaith: Did you converse with the other entities?

Agent Evelyn: Yes, I talked to the other agents… but now that I think about it, those conversations fit my personal impressions of them perfectly. Were they also constructed from my memories and imagination?

Dr. Ruaith: Based on currently available records, each person's "dream" is a separate environment. When did the scene start to change, then?

Agent Evelyn: I must apologize — I really thought at that time that there were no more anomalies, so I was very relaxed and didn't check the time… I guess it should have been after one or two hours. I started to notice the buildings outside shrinking, until they were the size they would be in real life, and the plants also started to disappear.

Dr. Ruaith: And then?

Agent Evelyn: And then the familiar sirens started up around the Site. But this wasn't because of a containment breach, but because… the warning siren itself had grown a pair of legs and many eyes, and was ringing while running about the Site. A strange pattern would appear where it touched the walls, and people and things it touched would grow strange-looking limbs. I rushed to the cafeteria to find my colleagues, but when I got there they were bathing naked in fountains the color of blood…

Agent Evelyn: At that point, the outside was pitch black, and only the warning lights and the dim lighting of the Site lit the room. The patterns on the walls kept changing, until they turned into an eye-like hole and… SCP-CN-███ and SCP-CN-███ came out, along with the Class D personnel who died during tests on those two objects. I was one of the security personnel during those tests… Even though I know they're just D-Class, I saw them die before my eyes, and now they were running at me. It was a little, well…

Dr. Ruaith: You shouldn't blame yourself for that. This is the part where the "dream" concludes, right? Go on.

Agent Evelyn: That's correct. Just when they were running towards me and grabbing at my clothes, I suddenly saw a canvas hanging from a lamp on the roof. I don't know why, but once I saw that canvas, I stopped panicking, and my brain was just curious how and why it was there. And when I broke free of the crowd and grabbed it, I saw that a photograph of my office in real life was pasted on it. At that moment, I realized that, "huh, this is just a dream". And then everything around me dissipated into bubbles and ddisappeared, and I woke up.

Dr. Ruaith: Alright. Now, can you describe the experience of the second "dream" you entered?

Agent Evelyn: It's quite strange, the second dream was very much like the first, yet I didn't realize it was a dream… there were only minor differences, that sci-fi feel was a bit more pronounced, and instead of sleeping people were… disco dancing? And then every water faucet and dispenser in the Site started spewing a weird viscous liquid that kept changing color. The rest was about the same.

Dr. Ruaith: And what was that "sign" in the second "dream"?

Agent Evelyn: This time it was even weirder, it was a table lamp submerged under the water… it was the same one as the one on my desk, I was so satisfied with myself for half a month after managing to get that model. When I saw it, I thought of my desk, and then I recalled what happened the first time and escaped from the dream.

Dr. Ruaith: After experiencing these two "dreams", do you have any idea of what the pattern behind the "signs" could be?

Agent Evelyn: It's hard to say what the pattern is. Based on what I currently now, I'd say the only pattern is that it's "something that makes you recall the real world, and recognize that you are in a dream". But it's quite strange how I didn't discover these special, recognizable items earlier. Does it always have to appear when the dream is about to fall apart? Maybe this is one of the patterns too, or maybe it only shows up at the very last moment?

Dr. Ruaith: That's something we're currently researching. Thank you for the information.

Agent Evelyn: This is all a private matter, though.

As my remaining youth is bestowed to Famen, I cherish the return to Yingchuan; I have always longed for the genuine article, and have always admired Lányuán. I dreamt I stepped foot in a samghārama, and entered the Vaidūryanirbhāsā; reciting mahās in Buddha-fields numbering as many as the sands of the Ganges. I prostrated myself before the Buddha, those fervent, uncountable myriads of lights; I bowed before Shakyamuni, illuminating in their entirety a nayuta of worlds. The ten Bodhisattvas, purified and subtle; the music of the Dharma chanted in Sanskrit came straight to my heart. What joy does a monk like myself have but to witness the dharma-lakṣana of Amitabha? What virtue does a monk like myself have but to hear the beautiful truth of Tathagata? The dream dissipated into magnificent, ephemeral clouds, yet the brilliant Western Pure Land remains eternal. The dignified staff, the lotus robes covering my body, the cave on Vulture Peak eternal.

That the pure wind stops in the West, is that the seasons and rhythms return to the East. In the third year of Zhenguan, the staff is bestowed following the road. Relying on the Emperor's spirit to sustain in the face of various customs hides the danger that they are barbarians; borrowing shadowy aid while walking a dangerous road puts one at risk even while being protected. The staff opens thousands of worlds, whether or not they see the space within emptiness; the rule of law extends to myriad places, whether or not it knows when one will live or die. The empty herd differs from the sea of dreams, enticing all to become lost within it. Thus I have traversed a hundred and ten nations, yet how did demons not approach me? I have traveled for seventeen years, yet no heretic has prevailed over me. In the first month of the nineteenth year of Zhenguan, I returned to Chang'an at last, with six hundred and fifty-seven sutras and commentaries, at which Emperor Taizong was so pleased he passed an edict that they shall be translated.

In the second month of the twenty-second year, slightly tired from the translation of the Yogācārabhūmi-Śāstra, I fell asleep in the archives of Hongfu Temple. Once again I visited the Vaidūryanirbhāsā, and once again I received the pity of Bhaisajyaguru Tathagata. The faint jade-like light of Candraprabha sweetly scattered across the great thousand worlds; the brilliant mirror-like illumination of Sūryaprabha sent a fragrant wind across the lands. The awakened one pointed me to the eternal kalpas, and the great master showed to me the underworld. Thus I saw and knew the three worlds that I once shamefully called Tianxia; light resided in four directions, not revealing the size of the world. The uncountable Buddhas would not allow a single speck of darkness; even throughout the worlds as many as the sands of the Ganges they drove out the nightmares. They struck fear into Fuxi for a hundred million years, and drove Nüwa beyond the realm. Emperor Jun gathered the ten suns, and I was perplexed at his name; Yu the Great founded the Nine Provinces, and I saw a flash as I touched his image. Mang of Xia covered the bright moon, and the path was clear enough to move the stars. The qilin does as it pleases, escaping to Zhen at the slightest wind. Pangloss aids the world, calming its heart by looking at the abyss.

In the third month of the twenty-second year, I returned to Chang'an from Luoyang, and visited Fang, Duke of Liang, to inform him of what had happened at Hongfu Temple. The Duke said this was a grave matter, and invited the sages of the Abnormality Council, Li, Duke of Wei, from the Department of State Affairs, the two craftsmen and Dukes Yan, and Huang Guanzi of the Grand Scribes' Department to the Abnormality Institute's secret meeting-place on Qinglong Fang. The Duke of Wei said that in the secret chambers of the palaces of Taiji or Daming, there were a lot of strange treasures and sacred objects from ancient times, some from as old as Fuxi's creation of humans, or as old as Xuanyuan bequeathing the invention of clothing; the instruments the Three Sovereigns used to lead the people, and that the Five Emperors used to divide the lands. That Zhuanxu separated Heaven from Earth, filling the four directions with light, that Yu Shun mapped the mountains and rivers, and brought virtue to the nine sons. Performing as if awaiting a royal plan, admiring divine judgement, offering to the Mandate of Heaven, they attempted to calm them to avoid disaster.

Huang Guanzi thought for a while and produced a beautiful plan. Famen Temple in Fengxiang is the prime Buddhist temple in Guanzhong. There, the Buddha's finger bone can illuminate the four directions, and the stacked eaves of the pagodas will illuminate the nine fields. The staff will be the gift of Tathagata himself, and the bone is from the true body of the Buddha. To place all the sacred implements in one place, the myriad treasures sealed in the base of the tower. [DAMAGED], or achieve a pressuring victory.

Fang, Duke of Liang, and the two Dukes Yan each approved and praised this idea. The assembled sages presented this idea to Taizong, and the Son of Heaven opened the treasury and laid out the myriad treasures! Oh, such a wise leader, who understands the depth of ancient history! The pure gold of Kunlun bestowed by Fuxi, the jade fruit of Shennong from the tree that separates heaven and earth, the nine mysterious ices of Nüwa, the true flame of Nanming, the copper phoenix lamp of Shaohao, Yu Shun's agricultural drawings of the land, Shi Huang Di's brilliant mirror. As the years that cover the Nine Provinces, like the light of the Three Worlds, one universe is lit in six directions, and four times the Three Sovereigns shall bring their light. The sages of the Abnormality Institute worked tirelessly for a hundred days, and the sweat of the masters of construction even as they directed fell like rain; over ten thousand workers were called; alongside the power of the harmonious treasures, they accomplished a feat of mere knowledge. Perhaps, has time reached a point where there is a path forward, and fate remains forever up to our hearts?

Ten springs and autumns have passed since, the two Dukes of Liang and Wei have passed, and my disciple Bianji has left this world too. My old age is soon to arrive, and the day I die approaches. I pried into the foundations, and today in the secret records of Tianzhu I leave this behind to you. I fear only that the instruments at Famen are imperfect, that the formations at Fufeng are weak. You should be cautious and respectful, especially as the evening comes; those who do not bear relation cannot be given it. The task of protecting the staff and spreading the Dharma is, too, my sect's work; we must not grow lazy for even a single evening.

Commentary: Oh! Will the Heavens bless us, the masses? Will the Earth protect us, the populace? Ah! The Sacred Township of the Red County, with its myriad millions of people; Huá​xià rises and falls, Jambudvīpa lives and dies. How can they continue to exist in one palace, a single staff entrusted with their safety and danger? Ever since the gentlemen Fang, Li and Yan, and Great Master Sanzang borrowed the might of the Three Sovereigns and the relics of the Five Emperors to create a single True Gold Staff to calm them, over two hundred years have passed. To remedy the lack of resources, and the endless desires of the people, after the reign of Empress Wu, the ancestral temple welcomed the bone of the Buddha six times. The treasure of a hundred generations, yet causing rooms full of damage; by a mysterious spell, it caused trouble on many occasions. We were, like our esteemed ancestors, innocent as a child, brave as to not fear the axe, admonished the tens, knowing it was as if we were throwing ourselves into the ocean and falling into the abyss of a trench within. During the prosperous times under Emperor Xianzong, Duke Changli disrespected the Buddha, admonishing the reception of the Buddha's bone, to Xianzong, and was exiled to the Lands of Smoke

Last year, there was a monk named Guan Xiu, who visited me in Chang'an. He said that in the night, he had dreamt of Amitābha, who explained the unspeakable secret, a so-called dream-bubble, which is like mist or lightning; earth, water, fire and air all coming together and dissipating in impermanence. Though there were hundreds and thousands of holy objects, and millions and billions of mysteries, how can those whose fates are destined escape? Even if there are exotic treasures, the likes of golden alms bowls, staffs of true gold, gilded monk's robes, the finest secret-colored Yue wares, the seven treasures of Ashoka, shells of hawksbill turtles, Bodhisattvas decorated in golden flowers, and embroidered clothes of the reign of Empress Wu, it is only delaying the inevitable. A thousand five hundred years later, the gold of Fuxi and the depictions of Yao, will inevitably scatter into dust and mud. In the era when the Dharma declines, how is the power of the celestials to stop them?

I suggest that the Buddha's finger bone and the staff be returned to Famen immediately. There should be three, yet not one has been ordered to the Secretariat-Chancellery. Now I am old, my soul has withered, and my heart is like ashes. The day my body is dragged to the mountains can be reckoned on my fingers. People die, and lights extinguish; their souls return to the great way. All things rest, yet now I would not be content to die. I now rely on you: now the Emperor's fifth son, Li Yan, a child carried in cloth, with limitless potential like a jade waiting to be cut, and voracious like a young hawk. Your generation should respect my wisdom: Bring him to Xuande and Renhua, and when a new Emperor is soon to come, make him the crown prince. If the heavens take pity and the prince is wise, he will return the bone and the staff to Famen, and if the people are fortunate, they can ensure that our Huá​xià/ will be secure for tens of generations. There are hundreds of worries in life; what concerns will we have in a thousand years?
