SCP-CN-1008

Item #: SCP-CN-1008

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-CN-1008 is contained in a locked box in Site-CN-91, in strict accordance with storage procedures for ordinary USB flash drives. The object is not to be exposed to blunt impact or strong electromagnetic field. Level 2 or higher clearance is required to access the object. The object is not to remain connected to a computer for more than 10 minutes.

Description: SCP-CN-1008 is a USB flash drive with its outer casing removed; its flash memory chip array is directly exposed as a result, and appears as a rectangular component. A standard USB-A plug is attached on one side. The storage capacity of the object remains unknown (estimated at above 1024 GB).

When the object is connected to an active computer (or another device supporting external USB storage), the object will instantaneously "save" a random object within a ██ m radius of itself to its flash memory through [DATA EXPUNGED] at one-minute intervals. This causes the selected object to instantaneously disappear, and a corresponding file to appear within the anomaly's memory. The name of this file is typically a meaningless string of characters, typically without a file extension and without a visible file size. Editing the name of the file does not have any effect on the object. There is currently no software or device capable of reading the files generated. Deleting files, formatting the drive, or physically damaging the integrity of a file on the drive (such as with strong electromagnetic fields) will cause the corresponding object to manifest in a similar range of the object. The object will not store the computer to which it is attached (limited to the main casing or central processing unit).

The anomaly was discovered on 201█/██/██ in a rented apartment in [REDACTED] City. The occupant at the time was a middle-aged male, who had been arrested that day for unlawful use of others' personal information. The next day, a large amount of electronic devices and digital storage media, including the anomaly, was retrieved from the residence. That afternoon, while reading data from the anomaly, its effects manifested: in four minutes, a chair, a potted plant, half of a printer and one ceramic cup were "saved" into the object, forcing the police station to cease investigation and hand the object over to the Foundation that night. During subsequent questioning, the man refused to acknowledge that the object possessed anomalous properties, insisting that he had "never heard of such horseshit in his life".

When the object was discovered, it contained several "object files", which have been released and found to correspond to ordinary home supplies.

A proposal to use the object to contain other anomalous objects has been proposed, but after the failure of an attempt to contain SCP-CN-412 using the object, this plan was abandoned.

Partial SCP-CN-1008 Experiment Log

Experiment A

Goal: Store an object in SCP-CN-1008

Process: Place a desktop computer in the middle of a large room; scatter styrofoam pellets on the floor. Plug SCP-CN-1008 into the computer.

Result: 8 minutes later, several pieces of styrofoam and the room's central light had disappeared. 8 new files appeared in the object's storage, all in an indiscernible format.

Experiment B

Goal: Release a 2 m long sofa in a room too small to accommodate it

Process: Insert SCP-CN-1008 into a small single board computer and use a string to place it into a 10 m deep hole of diameter 15 cm. The computer is programmed to delete the relevant file 42 s after the object is connected.

Result: [DATA EXPUNGED]

RESULTS CANNOT BE VIEWED

NEW ANOMALIES MANIFESTED DUE TO THIS EXPERIMENT

Experiment C

Object: A lit candle

Process: Place a lit candle and various pieces of styrofoam (as consumable items) near a computer with the object inserted.

Result: Three minutes later, the candle and flame disappeared. (High-speed videography record indicates that the flame's disappearance was caused by the loss of flammable material; the flame would more correctly be described as "extinguished".

Addendum

Experiment C-S

Goal: Release the file containing the candle
Process: 24 hours after the aforementioned experiment, connect the object to a computer and delete the file within SCP-CN-1008 containing the candle.
Result: The candle reappeared on the floor 1 m away from the computer, and immediately fell over. The wick produced white smoke, as if it had just been extinguished.

Experiment D

Object: D-271003

Process: Instruct D-271003 to stand next to a computer with SCP-CN-1008 inserted. After D-271003 is stored, disconnect SCP-CN-1008. One week later, release the file containing D-271003.

Result: (Saving) After one minute, D-271003 disappeared, and a new file appeared in the object, with no notable differences from other files within the object. (Releasing) One week later, D-271003 was released by deleting the corresponding file, and manifested 5 cm above the floor 2 m away from the computer, lying horizontally parallel to the floor while maintaining the standing posture he was in at the moment he was "saved", and fell to the ground. D-271003 proceeded to stand up and rub the back of his head; he was found to be no different from when he was "saved" (further investigation indicated that no anomalous effects persisted). D-271003 stated "I was standing just a second ago; I don't know why I'm suddenly lying on the ground", and did not seem to know anything about the intervening week.

Experiment E

Object: One wall clock, a room equipped with eight cameras

Process: Configure the cameras to cover the entire room. Following this, place the wall clock next to the computer with SCP-CN-1008 inserted; it was planned to release the clock one day later. The cameras are to record the time on the clock at the moment it disappears/reappears.

Result: (Saving) The clock was saved 9 minutes into the experiment displaying the time 03:16:27; prior to this, 7 cameras and a lamp were saved, forcing the experiment to be terminated and the room to be repaired. (Releasing) See next experiment.

Experiment E+

Goal: Release the clock

Process: Within the repaired room, delete the file containing the clock.

Result: The clock manifested approximately 2 m above the ground face down, and immediately fell to the ground, damaging the clock face. The clock "miraculously" manifested out of view of all cameras; as such, the time on the clock at the moment of manifestation was not recorded.

Comment by Dr. Wang ████ ███: "Looks like this thing suddenly got a mischievous streak…"

Experiment E++

Object: Five wall clocks, a room equipped with 24 cameras

Process: [See Experiment E]

Result: (Saving) Three minutes into the experiment, one of the wall clocks was saved, displaying the time 09:04:43; prior to this, one camera and one piece of window glass were also saved, but were quickly replaced. (Releasing) One day later, the clock was released by deletion. The clock manifested directly in front of a camera located at the corner of the room, with its face towards the camera. As such, it was clearly recorded that the time on the clock after releasing was still 09:04:43.

Experiment F

Object: A completely empty room (██ m ×ばつ ██ m ×ばつ 8 m), one specially produced 4-meter-long computer motherboard.

Process: The computer motherboard was placed vertically in the center of the room; SCP-CN-1008 was inserted into a port at the top of the machine, after which the computer was turned on.

Result: No notable events for 3 minutes. No objects disappeared during this period; however, the object did produce new files (later confirmed to contain air).

Experiment G

Object: A single board computer, a room filled almost completely with cement (the room from Experiemnt F was reused; a small hole of 5 cm diameter was left leading to the center of the room.

Process: Thes single board computer was programmed to shut down after 4 minutes. SCP-CN-1008 was inserted into the computer, after which the computer was placed at the bottom of the hole and fast-setting cement was poured into the hole to seal it.

Result: No externally visible effect. 4 minutes later, the computer automatically turned off. Meson scanning was carried out on the cement block, which revealed three cavities in the cement, all of which were cuboidal. The computer and the object were subsequently received, and the missing cement was confirmed to have been saved.

Experiment H

Object: Make a copy of a file corresponding to a styrofoam pellet, then delete it

Process: Insert SCP-CN-1008 into a computer programmed to make a copy of the document and subsequently delete the copy within one minute.

Result: None. Followup investigation indicated that the file was normally deleted.

Experiment I

Object: An ordinary PNG image (582 KB)

Process: Place sufficient sacrificial material; within 1 minute, use the computer to save the image to SCP-CN-1008. Observe for 5 minutes, then delete the image file.

Result: Four of the sacrificial objects were saved; the image did not change prior to being saved.

Experiment J

Object: A file corresponding to a sacrificial object

Process: Use a program to move the file from SCP-CN-1008 to the computer's main hard drive and then delete it.

Result: When the file was successfully moved to the computer's hard drive, the corresponding object was released, manifesting 10 cm behind the computer; deleting the file from the computer's hard drive did not cause any effects.

Experiment K

Object: SCP-CN-412

Process: Insert SCP-CN-1008 into a computer. Within the following minute, place SCP-CN-412 and a large amount of sacrificial objects into the computer's vicinity (no action is made using SCP-CN-412 itself).

Result: SCP-CN-412 was not saved. 15 minutes later, all sacrificial objects had been saved, and the experiment was terminated. SCP-CN-412 was returned to its original containment chamber.

The following files were found on the object prior to entering containment:
