Item #: SCP-299-DE
Object Class: Gleipnir
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-299-DE cannot be directly contained due to its nature. Since it has not yet been possible to predict the appearance of new SCP-299-DE artifacts, media need to be monitored for the sudden appearance of extremely advanced technology, "magic artifacts," and "spaceship wrecks." Finders of such artifacts and other witnesses are to be amnesticized according to standard protocol.
Confiscated artifacts are to be tested for their properties and potential uses at Site-DE12 and sent to appropriate storage facilities according to their value or danger. If the containment of said artifacts is problematic, appropriately specialized MTFs are to be be called in to take custody of the object and place it in the nearest vincinity until adequate containment measures are developed. Security measures for each SCP-299-DE anomaly can be found in Catalog 299-DE-S.
Historical records regarding SCP-299-DE artifacts are to be cataloged and redacted from public access.
Image material recovered from SCP-299-DE-213, which according to evaluations shows a metropolis.
Description: SCP-299-DE designates a variety of civilizations that, according to data received so far, will apparently exist in the distant future. These civilizations are variously named by their inhabitants and, as far as can be seen, inhabited by humans and other alien species. Normally, a civilization consists of only one species, but numerous variants with mixed populations are also known. Their extents are difficult to determine in all cases, but they all seem to span several different galaxies and even realities.
SCP-299-DE instances are usually quite different from previously known societies and also from each other. In some, there seem to be no differences or prejudices between the inhabitants in terms of appearance, origin, abilities, and views, presumably due to the existence of technologies that can eliminate any educational or physical differences within minutes, if desired. In other cultures, however, there are xenophobic and racist tendencies that manifest themselves in the oppression of large segments of the population and outright genocide. In still others, strict hierarchies prevail that cannot be broken. However, a variety of other social forms have been observed.
Flying Object in SCP-299-DE-102.
In many instances, methods to stop aging and death, and to impart anomalous abilities to biological life as desired seem to have been found. Apparently, individuals as old as four billion years or even more exist in some SCP-299-DE versions. Received evidence also suggests that inhabitants in SCP-299-DE are able to increase their physical and mental abilities to levels that should not be possible for biological life. All of these technologies are available to any resident or only to certain groups within the community, depending on the instance.
Government activities in many versions of SCP-299-DE are carried out by AIs overseen by committees or individual officers who control and interpret their output. Presumably to avoid potential bugs or unwanted self-programming. Other forms of government include monarchies, various forms of democracy, basic computer systems as supports for various forms of rule, numerous variants of socialism, and, in one instance, absolute rule by an intelligent school of mackerel.
Many of these societies presumably function only because of the use of robots and artificially created slaves perfectly suited to their particular purpose. Unlike normal inhabitants, however, these slaves are not considered living beings in many SCP-299-DE versions, but rather machines, even though they have numerous rights, such as the freedom to choose their place of residence or personal leisure activities. Said rights are protected by law.
It's pretty amazing what we've found out about these cultures. The populations of at least 70 versions somehow see clones as simultaneously equal and inferior. Presumably, the rights granted can most readily be understood as a part of preventive measures and "tool maintenance." One might wonder why they resort to clones at all, considering that inhabitants can acquire abilities that make them seem like gods in our time, but I suspect they simply see "clone work" as beneath them. Or they just don't want to specialize in jobs as much as artificial humans do. Well, we still have some material to evaluate, maybe something will come up in relation to this question…
Prof. Butter, Head of the SCP-299-DE Project
The Foundation is aware of SCP-299-DE because artifacts from these civilizations manifest at irregular intervals in our time. Why these artifacts manifest is unknown, but there are several theories circulating among Foundation researchers, such as faulty teleporters or time warps.
SCP-299-DE artifacts are numerous and can apparently appear anywhere in the universe. They have been discovered in ancient ruins and tombs or simply in the ground all over the world and, according to the analysis of historical records, manifest themselves at an average interval of two to ten years in one place on Earth. While they do not bear uniform insignia, they can be assigned to different SCP-299-DE versions through symbol and material analysis. Most of these objects are mere debris and/or non-functional and pose no threat, but some are still fully functional after thousands or even millions of years and possess a wide variety of properties depending on the object.
Object #: SCP-299-DE-0032
Object Description: A 5l bag full of humus/fertilizer
Site of Recovery: Isle of Skye, Great Britain
Anomalous Properties: Significantly accelerates plant growth.
Notes: The bag had burst open when it was found. The Foundation had become aware of this object because the humus had caused extreme uncontrolled growth of heather in the pasture where it had appeared, which could still be detected 500 meters away. In the process, the plants grew twice as tall and were longer in bloom. Amnestication was waived because the plants were destroyed within a week by the cattle of resident shepherds. Eyewitnesses thought the phenomenon was a vagary of nature. Remnants of the fertilzer were collected for examination.
Object #: SCP-299-DE-0089
Object Description: A gauntlet made from white metal
Site of Recovery: Island of Kythnos, Greece
Anomalous Properties: Any form of metal gripped by the glove can be shaped according to the wishes of the wearer
Notes: The item was discovered around 150 BC. Records seized by the Foundation indicate that the glove was used to construct the Antikythera mechanism. The object was later stolen by Mekhanites and recently rediscovered in a tomb on Kythnos along with the specified documents. However, the glove had been damaged by some kind of highly corrosive substance and no longer functions reliably.
Object #: SCP-299-DE-0112
Object Description: A tunnel boring machine
Site of Recovery: Zurich, Switzerland
Anomalous Properties: Drills with a high energy laser instead of a drill head with no apparent power source.
Notes: The machine had apparently manifested itself directly in the rock south of Zurich and was therefore unable to move forward. However, since it was apparently in operation, it began to melt out the rock in front of it until it was so badly damaged by the rock expanding and fracturing from the heat that it shut down. The object was discovered during construction of the Zimmerberg Base Tunnel and was confiscated by the Foundation after it was excavated. The tunnel was already completed at that time and eased its transportation. The cave in which it was located was subsequently sealed. A reactivation of the object succeeded in Site-DE20 by pure coincidence. It is currently being used to dig the rail network of the Foundation's underground magnetic railroad.
SCP-299-DE-0153.
Object #: SCP-299-DE-0153
Object Description: A white-grey cube with wires
Site of Recovery: Hong Kong, China
Anomalous Properties: Allows the storrage of over 400 yottabytes of data.
Notes: This cube was traded on the Chinese black market and eventually arrived in Japan, where it was found by the Foundation. Along with it, a makeshift adapter was found that allowed retrieving encrypted data. Decryption of this data provided many insights into the society of a version of SCP-299-DE. It was apparently a kind of album kept by a family. It should be noted that language and writing in this SCP-299-DE instance seem to have a memetic effect, making it understandable to everyone, regardless of native language or origin. (For more information, see Log 200-Alpha). So far, it is unknown if and how many other parties have accessed the cube and copied its data. Investigations are ongoing
Object #: SCP-299-DE-0201
Object Description: Wreckage of a spacefaring vessel.
Site of Recovery: Alice Springs, Australia
Anomalous Properties: None.
Notes: The wreckage materialized burning a hundred meters above the ground and destroyed a house on impact. Ten people died. The cover-up required a large Foundation contingent, as well as Class A amnesic sprayed by aircraft and antimemes printed in local newspapers. The components were recovered, but proved to be too far advanced to be repaired by today's methods. Human remains were found, but they were too badly burned to allow identification.
Object #: SCP-299-DE-0245
Object Description: A 2 m high and 70 cm wide canister made of metal and glass
Site of Recovery: Lagos, Nigeria
Anomalous Properties: Changes genetic material and phenotype of people placed in it.
Notes: The object works by means of an attached control panel. Choices include things like body size, skin color, body attributes and physical abilities. It is thus possible to reshape the entire human body. The device was brought to the Germanophone Foundation and is currently being tested for usability for the ATLAS Protocol.
SCP-299-DE-0299.
Object #: SCP-299-DE-0299
Object Description: A resonance weapon
Site of Recovery: Marcos Juáres, Argentia
Anomalous Properties: Destroys targets by reaching their natural frequency and sustaining it until structural collapse takes place.
Notes: The gun was found by a child who apparently thought it was a toy gun because of its shape. The misuse of the gun destroyed two houses and caused a small earthquake before it could be confiscated. 120 people died in this incident. The incident was declared a natural disaster and, after an investigation, the weapon was placed in storage at Site DE12 until the Foundation's technology is advanced enough to replicate it.
Object #: SCP-299-DE-0333
Object Description: A helmet with a touchscreen
Site of Recovery: Bagdad, Irak
Anomalous Properties: Allows to change the personality and intelligence of a person beyond the limits of what is physically possible.
Notes: The object was in the possession of the ORIA, which used it to ease interrogations. The device came into the Foundations's possession during a raid, after which it was discovered that too great a change in personality and too great an increase in cognitive ability resulted in side effects in the form of mental disorders, depression, and sudden death. Tolerance to the effect of the artifact was apparently dependent on genetic factors. The device was later stolen during an infiltration by the IMBW.
Object #: SCP-299-DE-0356
Object Description: A semi-fluid metal-alloy (200 Liters)
Site of Recovery: Oaxaca, Mexiko
Anomalous Properties: Ecteontropic worker drone
Notes: Appeared in the ground and apparently began digging tunnels under the earth and excavating foundations for buildings, forming its body into tools. The undermining resulted in a severe landslide that buried several hundred homes. The object was found in the aftermath and could be deactivated by electrical current pulses. Researchers at site-DE12 subsequently managed to reactivate the artifact and are currently attempting to reprogram it. The material must be stored in a spinning barrel because it will start moving again and run its program when it comes to rest.
Object #: SCP-299-DE-0409
Object Description: A weapon of mass destruction
Site of Recovery: Rings of Saturn
Anomalous Properties: Fires a white beam that travels at faster than light speed. Radiation measurements with SCP-███-DE suggest that hit objects are halfly converted into antimatter, which then annihilates with the remaining matter.
Notes: The object has the shape of a pen and is estimated to be about 12 meters long and 5 meters thick. It is labeled with silver paint and has writing on it that was used to identify it as an SCP-299-DE instance. Since its discovery, the device has fired five times at irregular intervals. With the help of SCP-███-DE, two hits could be confirmed, once near the center of the Milky Way and once at a location in the Horsehead Nebula. The targets, an asteroid about the size of Mars' moon Phobos and a star three times the mass of the Sun, were destroyed without residue.
Object #: SCP-299-DE-0476
Object Description: A powered armor
Site of Recovery: Cham des Bondons, France
Anomalous Properties: The object seems to be a construction tool, as it does not seem to have any weapons. More detailed investigations could not be carried out yet, because the suit could not be opened or damaged so far. The object was discovered during excavations on the Cham of Bondon, together with a stone slab with runes and engravings from the Copper Age. The engravings show a humanoid apparently carrying a large object, surrounded by other humanoids who appear to be cheering. The runes accompanying it apparently form the words "The Erector/The Builder." Because of the absence of other records, several theories exist about this object. For example, it is believed that the original finder of the artifact, or at least the one who last wore it, is still encased within it. A claim that has not yet been proven, as non-destructive imaging techniques have not yet been able to penetrate the object. Another theory assumes that the carrier set up the numerous menhirs that can be found on the Cham of the Bondon. The reason for this, however, is unknown.
Object #: SCP-299-DE-0673
Object Description: Black, cone-shaped object with a height of 4 m and a diameter of 3 m, apparently some kind of terraforming device.
Site of Recovery: North Pole
Anomalous Properties: So far, it has been observed cleaning air in its environment.
Notes: The object was found during a Foundation North Pole expedition that was actually searching for another anomaly. One third of it protruded from the ice and seemed to rid the air around it of some of its carbon dioxide and various toxins. The object was later fully excavated, which made the effect extremely pronounced, before Dr. Spring ordered it to be vacuum sealed. The object has not been unsealed since its arrival at Site-DE12, as it is unknown whether it is programmed to adapt Earth's atmosphere for humans or another life form with different environmental needs, or whether its program also includes wiping out predominant life forms. To date, the artifact has shown no other activity.
Records have been recovered from various wrecks as well as other SCP-299-DE artifacts, which are currently causing widespread discussion among personnel assigned to SCP-299-DE. Time stamps suggest that all records document the same event. This event appears to be a cross-reality K-Class scenario that apparently cannot be stopped by any means available to SCP-299-DE. This scenario has been designated SCP-299-DE-Ω and has been observed in 15 instances to date.
The nature of SCP-299-DE-Ω is unknown. From preserved material, it is apparent that some sort of completely black field, or possibly mass, begins to spread in a disk-like fashion on a space station or planet and within a few minutes grows so large that planets, star systems, and eventually galaxies can be obscured by it. As soon as this phenomenon has spread over the whole reality, it seems to "fold up" the universe to a fraction of its size and thereby destroys it completely. Remarkable here is that the process then repeats itself with all realities, which were connected by dimension portals with the destroyed reality.
Footage recovered from SCP-299-DE-546. The photos shown here are three consecutive frames of a video.
The inhabitants of SCP-299-DE instances usually break out in panic because of this apparently unexpected event and try to acquire spaceships and other means of transportation to bring themselves to safety, partly also by using reality jumps, but due to various malfunctions of the means of transportation, all of them so far have resulted in the death of all occupants before arrival.
How SCP-299-DE-Ω was triggered is not known. From collected data, however, it appears that the life span of SCP-299-DE's universes was about to expire. Opinions differ among researchers about the implications of this fact. Several theories exist that attempt to link SCP-299-DE-Ω to the natural end of a universe, for example, the Eisler hypothesis assumes that the black field is a new universe that begins to expand due to a falling "pressure" of reality. In contrast, however, is the End Hypothesis, which assumes that the collected records show realities that all return to a common state before the Big Bang. In addition, numerous other theories are being discussed, but the SCP-299-DE research staff currently agrees that there is too little data for now to reach a conclusive result.
Project Lucifer Briefing
You will probably ask yourself what is so frightening about this project that only the O5 is actually allowed to know about it. In principle, not the project itself. This is a reconnaissance mission, as the carrier of this letter has surely informed you. There is one thing about SCP-299-DE that is found out with amazing regularity and causes existential fears among some researchers. And in two cases led to suicide.
SCP-299-DE are not just single galaxy-spanning empires or federations of universes. They are all realities in the multiverse. Pretty much all instances knew about each other, but they considered a cultural exchange pointless because of their similarity or their too big differences.
Even though we have only 15 confirmed cases of SCP-299-DE-Ω, our estimates of the amount of universes affected by SCP-299-DE-Ω are much higher. This anomaly creates a huge distortion of space-time, which means that such debris as we find it can appear anywhere in time and space, and especially in all possible realities. And we find some of it every ten weeks on average. Only 15 societies can't spread over infinity like that. So it stands to reason that SCP-299-DE-Ω is the ultimate end of all universes. One that not even the most advanced technology of any intelligent life can stop.
One might think.
However, one of the commonalities between all these iterations of SCP-299-DE was that they exhausted all possibilities to escape their inevitable demise. And we know of at least four that they thought they had made it.
One of the Foundation's goals is to preserve the world. While the O5 Council is aware that at least 20 billion years will pass before the end of our time, it is considered important to set a course now that may end up being a million years.
Your goal will therefore be to search the remains of SCP-299-DE for clues that will allow us to replicate this existence-extending technology. To this end, you will have access to all the data we have on SCP-299-DE. You literally have all the time in the world. But you must not give up.
We secure. We contain. We protect.
