Item #: SCP-1646-JP

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: As of now, no method for complete containment of SCP-1646-JP has been established, and research into further containment measures is underway. Since the establishment of the current Special Containment Procedures, Site-81██ has handled only low-threat objects, and its staff consists only of personnel with Security Clearance Level 2 or lower, whose duties are of minor importance.

SCP-1646-JP-α is to be contained in a special care unit at Site-81██. The medical staff members are to immediately respond to any abnormalities in the vital signs of SCP-1646-JP-α detected through the connected devices. In the event that SCP-1646-JP-α expires or awakens from its coma state, the search and recovery of the newly generated instance of SCP-1646-JP-α is to be conducted.

Description: SCP-1646-JP is the designated term for an anomalous comatose symptom that only occurs in a single Foundation personnel at any given time. To date, a total of ███ personnel have been confirmed to have previously been under its influence, all of whom are of Security Clearance Level 2 or lower.

When an individual under the influence of SCP-1646-JP first falls asleep in that state, they immediately enter a coma (hereafter this coma patient is referred to as SCP-1646-JP-α). The duration of this coma can vary from as early as an hour to as long as several years before recovery; the longest observed case lasted for 17 years and 2 months. In addition, no external means, including painful stimuli, have succeeded in forcibly awakening SCP-1646-JP-α to date.

EEG monitoring conducted on SCP-1646-JP-α showed signs of a continuous increase in stress levels from a minimum of 102 hours to a maximum of 156 hours, which occurs with an interval of one hour each time, as well as intermittent recall responses of fear and disgust. Despite this, all instances of SCP-1646-JP-α that awoke from the coma were unable to describe the factor that had caused their fear and disgust, and did not remember any dreams or visions that they had recalled or perceived during the coma. Additionally, the majority of SCP-1646-JP-α instances reported inexplicable and vague feelings of guilt and regret during post-awakening interviews.

Once SCP-1646-JP-α awakens, or expires while in a coma, another Foundation personnel is newly subjected to the influence of SCP-1646-JP. While it has been confirmed that this process tends to affect personnel who are located in the vicinity of SCP-1646-JP-α and have Security Clearance Level 2 or lower, the exact factors that determine the selection criteria remain unknown. There are no known cases of personnel who once became an instance of SCP-1646-JP-α being affected by SCP-1646-JP again.

SCP-1646-JP was first observed in 19██. Due to its nature, a complete containment method has not been established to date, and only damage mitigation measures through current Special Containment Procedures have been implemented. Given the properties of targeting only Foundation personnel, the possibility that it is caused by other anomalies was considered; however, no potential factors for SCP-1646-JP have been discovered.

Update: Among the former instances of SCP-1646-JP-α, many of the personnel who awoke from a prolonged coma have demonstrated clear signs of mental illnesses that closely resemble hero syndrome and messiah complex. Further investigation conducted in response has revealed that the majority of the former instances of SCP-1646-JP-α have psychological and mental conditions greatly similar to those cases.

This result suggests that SCP-1646-JP have a mind-altering effect, or that Foundation personnel with some kind of heroic or megalomaniacal desires are more vulnerable to its influence. Research and verification of these matters are ongoing.

Footnotes
. Security Clearance Level 0, 1 and 2 personnel who are not involved in any critical projects. D- and E-Class personnel are not included in this category.
. This duration is shorter in SCP-1646-JP-α instances that are in a prolonged coma. If the previous instance of SCP-1646-JP-α was awakened early, the duration in the next instance tends to increase.
