Item #: SCP-1299-JP
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-1299-JP’s movement must always be followed using GPS. Furthermore, the waters navigated by SCP-1299-JP are closed off to any vessels and submarines that are not part of the Foundation under the cover story "military exercise".
All human attempts at entering SCP-1299-JP are prohibited. Drones are to be used to perform internal inspections.
Description: SCP-1299-JP is the submarine "Ganryū", used by the Foundation. SCP-1299-JP "sails" and "anchors" every 4 weeks, following the route used in 2012 during a sailing drill for 16 weeks. Presently, there’s been no remarkable deviations to this route. If the ship is landed and disturbed, it will disappear and reappear on its normal route.
All objects and life-forms entering SCP-1299-JP will disappear within 1 hour following entry. The moment at which this happens has not been observed thus far. Furthermore, banging and scratching noises are heard from the inside when SCP-1299-JP resurfaces. Following investigation, it’s believed these sounds are produced by a humanoid entity within SCP-1299-JP. Using radiographic testing to investigate, as of may of 2018, a total of 87 entities have been found, although only their skeletons have been confirmed.
The reason behind SCP-1299-JP’s anomaly is not known. At the very least, no anomalies were detected in the communications performed right before its entry into the Foundation’s base. The period between the end of communications and the detection of the anomaly by the Foundation was 10 minutes. It’s known that upon deck-landing, the forward hatch opened by itself.
Addendum: The following is part of a mail sent by SCP-1299-JP:
Document 1299-1
There’s an anomaly on the ship. Will briefly report anomaly.First, all crewmen but me are gone. Then there’s the banging sounds coming from outside the hull. The cause for both is unknown.
I don’t know why I am the only one left. About 12 hours ago, I went to the infirmary because I was feeling ill. Taking into account that I woke up at around 2100, something must have happened during the past 12 hours. Also, there’s feelings of discomfort in the space between my skin and flesh. To use an analogy, it feels like wiggling worms. I don’t know the cause for this. Might be some kind of disease.
Considering how I could influence the outside world, I will not leave. Communications will only come through this mail.
Document 1299-4
Anomaly on the fourth day. Periscope confirms that the outside is trying to deal with our situation. However, there are no external changes. I think it might be some sort of anomaly.New anomaly confirmed. While I’m not paying attention, someone is operating the equipment as normal. For example, the engine keeps running inside the power room, and food is being served in the cafeteria. Particularly, food is served every 6 hours, which is to say four times a day. Curry was served at 1200 yesterday.
Currently, I’m living in the infirmary. Tomorrow I’ll explore the interior.
I want this mail to become my investigation report and journal. I thought that a small trivial event could be the starting clue that could lead to the solution of this situation. Also, considering the influence of psychological stress due to being hermetically sealed inside the submarine, these recreations are necessary. In particular, if I don’t do anything, the itching and that sound get to me. I’ll have to get used to it.
Document 1299-5
I borrowed a key from the captain’s quarters, and explored the crew’s luggage. I didn’t have any trouble. My body itches. I borrowed and used an anti-itching medication, but it didn’t help.
Yesterday and today, I failed to eat canned food at the cafeteria. I didn’t confirm it when the meal was served, but it appeared while I was eating canned food. It was steak, of all things. The smell coming out of the canned gomoku meshi reminded me of rakugo. Patience. There surely must be a way to leave.
After the meal, I checked the ship’s reserves. Frozen beef is decreasing. Will this ever increase, I wonder?
Document 1299-11
A problem occurred. The reserves increased. Naturally, this includes the canned food I thought was safe to eat.I lost my composure at lunch time. Must be the stress. I ate the curry they served me today. I ate until I was full.
The curry was definitely made with our seasoning. But I think I caught a part of the anomaly.
Our curry was prepared using spieces partially gathered by third mate Katsuragi. The curry pot always had a paper with "extremely spicy" written on it. I remember part of the crew looking forward to it. I was one of them. That’s how I know it’s the same thing.
I checked third mate Katsuragi’s locker. I found spices that weren’t there the last time I checked. I checked the handwriting of the memo that was alongside it, and I’m certain it was written by third mate Katsuragi, probably. But how? Are the crew still here, and I just can’t see them? I don’t know.
I’ll sleep in the torpedo room today. When I was a rookie, I slept there when it was hot. Will my itch die down if I cool down my body? That being said, I’m certain I’m getting used to the itch and the noises.
Document 1299-28
Today is day 28. Something’s wrong with the ship. I don’t know how to put it... There’s a foreboding air when we set sail. The noises have gotten louder since yesterday. Is something gonna happen soon?
I’m gonna rest today. That feeling that’s been weakening has been eating away at my body.
Document 1299-29
It’s been the worst wake-up I’ve had. My body itches all over. I can still hear the sound, even when I cover my ears. It’s driving me crazy.A new anomaly occurred. The Ganryū has begun moving. I’ll write about it as best as I can remember.
I can’t remember the exact time because of the itch I was suffering, but I remember the engine changing directions. And with it, the sound and the itch got way worse. A short time after it began moving, the sound transferred from below to above me. It’s like something is driving them away. And then the itch that had spread all over my body moved from the front to the back of my body. After a bit, both were gone. I checked with the periscope, and it seems we’re underwater.
This might be nothing else but a hypothesis, but I think the itch and the noise are related. Thus, that would mean me and the submarine might be related. I might be overthinking, but I’ll keep it as a hypothesis.
Currently underwater. When we surface, I’ll send another message.
After departing, I was free from the annoying noise and itch. However, I don’t think I’ll be returning back to earth. I pray that’s not the case.
Document 1299-32
While surveying the ship, I found the duty logbook on top of a desk. Usually, from the point of view of information preservation, this wouldn’t be allowed, but for this occassion, I want to thank you. The written contents were about the training sailing, which is to say, the sailing right before the anomaly occurred. The last date on it is exactly four days after we left port.I had an idea, so I’ll leave the journal alone.
From here I’ll talk about my personal story. This isn’t related to the experiment, but it’s rather for the sake of my own mental stability.
I went through the duty logbook today. Naturally, it lists all crew members on duty that day, as well as the contents of their work. I suddenly remembered everyone from here.
What did you do during work? What did you talk about during breaks? It’s honestly just trivial stuff. But I’m not going back.
I thought that, without the itch and the noise, I’d be mentally composed. But it wasn’t like that, because it’s been done, and now every little thing reminds me of the crew. I keep remembering time and time again, realizing I’m the only one here. The memories are killing me. The memories are keeping me sane.
This is hell.
Document 1299-46
I checked the logbook. As a result, the logbook’s contents have been updated. Is there someone else besides me? Maybe it’s whatever was making that sound.Lately, I’ve been having trouble sleeping. I wanna sleep.
Document 1299-56
I remember feeling like the hull resurfaced. The periscope confirms we’re near a place we visited on our last voyage. I can’t tell from the logbook’s contents, but we may be following the last voyage made. I’m not sure why.The sound and the itch are covering my body. This time it spread in the opposite direction from last time.
Sure enough, me and the submarine are connected.
Next I need to find where my colleagues are.
Document 1299-57
Sure enough, the ship landed at the expected port. The Foundation’s forces are coming over. The weapons remind me of a certain Group of Interest. I’m now in sync with the Ganryū. What would happen if the ship is attacked enough to sink? I don’t want to think about it.
Document 1299-61
Supplies have been added. Found a hammer amongst the new goods. Tools are naturally present inside the ship. Maybe this’ll let me access places I couldn’t get to before. If I can get to places I couldn’t before, maybe I’ll find some new clues.
Document 1299-85
The Ganryū has left port. We’re now underwater.During this departure, I’ll look into the cause of the anomaly and where the crew has gone.
There’s no reason for it, but I feel like I’m running out of time. I need to hurry.
Document 1299-86
The source of the sound may not be external. The submarine has two layers, an external and an internal shell, with space inbetween. Something in there must be causing it.It’s a horrible guess, but the crew might be making the noise. Maybe during underwater navigation, they couldn’t make a sound because they’d drown otherwise.
Today, I’ll try to contact them using morse code. If I can’t, I’ll try again once we resurface.
I wonder, are their senses normal? Even me, right now, am struggling to keep my sanity intact. How can you keep your sanity if you’re crammed in such a confined space, nearly drowning at all times?
I hope the Foundation is aware of this.
Document 1299-98
Heard noises coming from the forward hatch. I checked; there’s something there. The submarine’s hatch has two layers. Maybe there was something in there. As the Foundation isn’t able to interfere, maybe it’s a good thing that they didn’t discover that.
In case of emergency, I’ll open the hatch next time we surface. Hope they’re not hostile entities.
Document 1299-112
I opened the hatch. I fell down. I was the one at the tip of the hatch. This me will end up on a bed at the infirmary.
I’ll now investigate the surroundings of the hatch. Hope I find something before we arrive at the port.
Note 1: As of May 2018, a chain of mails with similar content has been received 18 times.
Note 2: The number of humanoid entities inside SCP-1299-JP will increase by one the day after document 1299-122 is sent.
Note 3: Because of the entire crew of SCP-1299-JP escaping before the anomaly manifested, all of them survived.
