Cutting through the jargon

The author explains what all this means in a visual description.

Image all made by myself.

Let's not focus on where the x, y, and z axes are pointing or their colours. Let's focus on what a "Gimbal Lock" is.

1.gif

When we say that an axis is dependent on the upper axis, it means that the green axis influences the blue axis, and the red axis influences the green axis. The three axes affect the objects at each lower level.

2.gif

The gimbal lock is like this: when two axes overlap like this, the object loses one axis of rotation. This is because the two axes produce the same result.

3e.gif

The problem with this is that it restricts free rotation. To rotate in the direction indicated by the white arrow, you would typically just turn in the most intuitive way. But now, one axis is missing, right? In the current state, you have to remove the gimbal lock first.

Contrary to its name, gimbal lock doesn't actually lock the axes. But it does make you follow a bizarre orbit, quite far from the path you would intuitively think of.

Errors occur in this process. If it were a 3D animation, Anna could punch Elsa instead of building a snowman. If it were a spaceship, there might be problems with controlling the position. Gimbal locks caused problems in controlling Apolo-11's position, and a Soviet moon rocket exploded because of this.

I'll show you a comparison video of what it should look like when it rotates normally.

It's definitely strange.

Conclusion-1) The gimbal lock of 821ko is a real 'Lock' that locks the hands.

Conclusion-2) The solution (Key) to this problem is only to "Cut" the hands. (Drum Roll)

In hindsight, I might have made this article more fun. I can feel how difficult it was for me to understand the concept at the time. I'm sure it was challenging for all of you, too. I hope this GIF I made helps you understand.
