Today I tried to install Java 7 on an XP professional PC of another guy to run one of my applications. After confirming the first dialogbox, the install program always aborted without an error message. Updating MSIExec didn't help, cleaning the registry didn't help, google didn't help. The same happened with Java 6, but not with Java 5. However I needed at least Java 6.

After hours of unsuccessful trying, including running MSIExec with logging, a surprisingly simple solution worked: running the install with the silent option ("/s"). WTF?!
