Theme development

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

This is a special interest group dedicated to improving and expanding the Drupal theme system including theme functions and templates, CSS, markup, and how contrib modules add in their functions, CSS, and markup.

for example, we'll take stock of the location and number of CSS files and discuss if the architecture can be improved through emerging frameworks like Object Oriented CSS.

We will consider the questions "What do themers need from Core in terms of CSS? Module developers? SEO specialists?" and "What's new in CSS? What does Drupal support? What's the roadmap for CSS support?"

beginner responsive theme development question

Posted by cuculain on February 4, 2015 at 4:08am

I have a little experience working with conventional themes and css, but I am new to working with responsive themes. I have installed the Radix theme on a panopoly site and read what I have been able to find about customizing the theme. However, I have not gotten too far. So far I have not found a lot of info for beginners.

I am not sure the best way to proceed with some simple changes. For example I want to add a logo over the navbar. Do I alter the page.tpl.php file to do this? Are most changes made via bootstrap?

Hi everyone, you may or may not have noticed but the sessions proposal has been opened for the Drupal Dev Days 2015.

The frontend importance is growing from a core release to an other and it's great! But the complexity is also growing, there are more and more topics and good practises to be aware of in order to be a good frontend developer.
If you are a developer and care to be able to have a discussion with your themer you also need to know that.

Changes to Drupal 8 that affect admin theme maintainers

Posted by lewisnyman on January 9, 2015 at 12:01pm

Happy Friday! I maintain the admin theme in Drupal 8 core: Seven. There have been many changes to Seven in Drupal 8 that affect the relationship between admin themes and modules, and how the admin UI is generated.

I've always thought that the strategy we've put in place are going to have a positive impact on maintainers of contrib admin themes, but I've never sought out feedback directly. I am now!

Technical solution: Alternative homepage for mobile

Posted by datarazor on December 23, 2014 at 5:18pm

Hi folks,

On a new site I am building we are using the same theme for mobile and desktop, but for the homepage I want to disable, server-side, some aspects of the homepage when a mobile client appears on our site. The desktop version of the homepage is a very fancy parallax and the mobile version will be function-over-form.

I'm considering using:

https://www.drupal.org/project/mobile_detect

And using PHP to enable/disable various aspects of the homepage when it triggers.

How can we improve frontend sprints at Drupal events?

Posted by lewisnyman on December 5, 2014 at 9:48am
Last updated by lewisnyman on Wed, 2015年01月07日 12:36

At DrupalCamp Ghent, we held a very small frontend BOF, with myself, Laurii, Emma.maria, and guest frontender Xano.

It quickly became a retrospective on the Friday sprints that took place at DrupalCon Amsterdam. The collective thoughts were not positive. It felt like we fell way short of our goals and potential for the Friday sprint. Drupalcon Friday sprints are about introducing people to sprinting and it feels like we failed badly at that.

Here were some of the problems:

  • Newbies did not get enough help
  • The few people helping the newbies did not get enough support

What do Freelance Themers want to see in a Help Wanted post?

Posted by Michael-IDA on August 28, 2014 at 2:06pm

Hi Themers,

I recently posted a Theming Job [1] which produced a lot of spam [2], but zero replies showing the person had read the post and/or could follow application instructions. I thought the application instructions were insanely easy (one link, estimate, ask questions), but I guess no one read down that far?

In any event, as I still need the work done, and I apparently need to re-write the job rec., so:

Image Action for Blend mode: Darken or Multiply?

Posted by datarazor on July 28, 2014 at 6:25pm

Hi There, anyone have any code written for a custom Image Style Action that will blend (darken or multiply) an image into a canvas color I provide?

I've been toying with Image Styles Actions module and I can't seem to find a darken/multiply blend mode.

I can't install ImageMagick on this server, if that's important. So I'm hoping for an Action I can load that will process the images as necessary.

Any way to do this with Image Actions or with custom code?

Thanks!!

mixed fixed and responsive with Zen grids?

Posted by datarazor on May 12, 2014 at 5:41pm

Hi there,

I hope this is the best place to post my question, if not please refer me to the proper group / focum or support area! Thank you.

I'm trying to make a responsive (sub theme zen) template using SASS w/ zen grids. I noticed when using the responsive template that it makes the right side bar expand /shrink when you re-size. I only want the main content area to resize. If I set a min-width on the side-bar the percentage margins that zen grids adds breaks the layout.

If I try to set the width in the include statement:

.region-sidebar-second {
//set width to 292px

CSS Help Needed

Posted by Isaac777 on November 17, 2013 at 6:41pm

I suspect this is not where I Should post this so if so, would someone be kind enough to point as to where I should?

I have some experience with Drupal and I am trying to learn CSS. I have very limited knowledge at this point. On the site www.internationalebrochure.com, I want to use a background image. I've accomplished that to a large degree. It uses D7 with the responsive green theme. You will notice that about a third of the way down the page there is a white line. I cannot figure out how to eliminate that. I can't find the associated code.

Seven Style Guide update

Posted by lewisnyman on October 18, 2013 at 1:08pm

A few months ago in February we proposed a style guide for the Seven theme, we are now well underway. This is a recap and look ahead.

The objectives of the Style Guide are:

  • Identify Drupal core values that we can use to determine the look & feel for the Seven theme.
  • Unify the visual language in Seven and ensure the overall look-and-feel supports the core values.
  • Identify the visual and UI patterns used by Drupal core so that they form a conscious, shared language for us to built upon.

Mobile Navigation - Working on Local site but not on live (both in Safari)?

Posted by spessex on September 13, 2013 at 12:09pm

If anyone can help with the following it would be greatly appreciated as I'm quickly becoming grey haired over it.

Basically I have a site that's navigation works perfectly on all local versions but has issues when testing the live site on the most of the same browsers (please note all files are identical in terms of those on local and live server).
