Theme development

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

This is a special interest group dedicated to improving and expanding the Drupal theme system including theme functions and templates, CSS, markup, and how contrib modules add in their functions, CSS, and markup.

for example, we'll take stock of the location and number of CSS files and discuss if the architecture can be improved through emerging frameworks like Object Oriented CSS.

We will consider the questions "What do themers need from Core in terms of CSS? Module developers? SEO specialists?" and "What's new in CSS? What does Drupal support? What's the roadmap for CSS support?"

Blueskying Drupal 8 Mobile Solutions

Posted by johnalbin on October 18, 2011 at 8:32pm

Building mobile solutions encompasses a large problem space: native apps, HTML5 web apps, responsive design, device capability detection, mobile/desktop switching, front-end performance, etc.

I'm seeing lots of really interesting contrib modules and themes tackling mobile problems in Drupal 7.

Since Dries has already indicated that mobile will be an important aspect of Drupal 8, my question is:

what do you think Drupal 8 core (not contrib) should provide for mobile solutions out of the box?

Design Initiative - Design Brief Proposal

Posted by Jeff Burnz on September 28, 2011 at 11:20am
Last updated by silverwing on Sat, 2011年12月17日 16:45

Over the past months we've had many discussions here in the d4d group, at various Drupal camps, IRC and in the issue queues. I have kept notes and references to most of these discussions and based on those prepared a proposed design brief for the design initiative. It would be good if someone can enable comments on this wiki page, so we can discuss this and make changes etc to the brief. This is my initial idea - what is missing is a link to a demo site (I am setting that up today, I have a pretty good boilerplate site thats a good starting point).

Standard site name for Drupal Camps

Posted by njmahesh on September 26, 2011 at 10:56pm

Drupal camps have been very valuable sources for learning many things from Gigs and also update with new stuff. Its really useful to watch videos/slides after the camp is done but everyone having different names based on their group, year which really confuse a lot, I mean they can any name they want but the site name for all the Drupal camps I feel should be consistent so I don't need to track or search for it.

My suggestion is:

year.drupalcamp.groupname

For ex:

2011.drupalcamp.nyc

I love the Omega theme, but I am stumped as to how to modify the existing (mobile, narrow, normal, wide) sizes and add new ones (super-wide, sub-normal, ...).

Any help greatly appreciated!

Albert.

Contemplate module and Drupal 7

Posted by dgtlmoon on September 20, 2011 at 10:37pm

Hi All,

So I've picked up the contemplate module to maintain and help work on the D7 release.

ConTemplate provides a textarea per content type with a pre-generated output theme (similar to theme_field()) of all that content type's fields, there you can move them around / insert new stuff / change the layout completely.

It's used by newcomers because they can tweak the layout / HTML structure without putting files on the disk , as well as more experienced users for doing the same as well as tweaking the RSS layout etc.

So Long, Internet Explorer 6

Posted by jacine on September 19, 2011 at 5:03am

On September 11, 2011, the Drupal project scored a huge win. Dries Buytaert committed a patch, officially dropping IE6 support in Drupal 8! This is exciting news for Drupal, as it will allow us to get rid of some legacy baggage, and use more clean and modern coding techniques. It also translates to less of a burden for contributors.

FitVids for fluid width videos

Posted by derekahmedzai on September 15, 2011 at 8:23am

FitVids is a new module for fluid width videos.

http://drupal.org/project/fitvids

It uses the FitVids.js library for fluid width video embeds (YouTube, Vimeo, etc).
It's useful if you are using a responsive theme (such as Omega), and want the videos to scale.

Available for Drupal 6 and 7.

To those doing responsive web design in #drupal, what base theme are you starting with?

I posed the following question on Twitter, and thought the answers might be helpful to others (as well as a place to archive further discussion that's actually searchable :P).

Only local images are allowed.

Here were some of the more detailed responses. This is a wiki, so feel free to add additional ones, either in the post or comments!

Theming Pagers

Posted by Anonymous on September 8, 2011 at 10:08pm

Is there a way to theme pagers? I'm fairly new to Drupal, so I hope this isn't a dumb question. Specifically, I've designed a themed pager that would augment the pager used by the views module, but not sure what to use to implement my theme- a theme hook? theme hook suggestion? template file?

Site name styling

Posted by timnext on September 7, 2011 at 9:32pm

I would like to style the site name with two different styles. (i.e. Site Name) "Site" would be a large bold font and "Name" would be a smaller normal font. I tried splitting it into site name and site slogan which would allow me to style them separate but reverted due to an SEO compromise and split link. Any suggestions?

Changeable Background Image for Drupal 7 Theme

Posted by markwk on July 27, 2011 at 5:48am

I'm working on creating a drupal 7 clone of LaunchRock.com, a way to create a pre-launch page. Basically it's a a simple page with sign up for a mailing list and some social media links for fblike, tweet, googe+1. The layout is focused on a simple box in the center of the page with an adjustable background image.

So, my question is: how would I make it possible for people to add their own background image?

(For anyone interested, the project is current hosted here: https://github.com/markwk/backdrop (theme) and https://github.com/markwk/comingsoon_features(features).)

design.drupal.org Prototype for Review

Posted by Jeff Burnz on July 11, 2011 at 9:09am

Over the past few months we've been working away behind the scenes on the Drupal Design site prototype. There are quite a number of technical considerations when building a new drupal.org sub-site so these needed to be ironed out before we could really show this off.

I've posted a number of screen grabs to Notable and we can use these to collect comments and feedback on the various screens throughout the site - you can leave general comments here but if you're wanting to leave comments about the actual screens please post those to Notable.

Sub-theme vs base theme

Posted by mkalbere on July 10, 2011 at 9:53am

Hello,
For a long time I developped sub-theme (mainly based on http://drupal.org/project/clean).
The main advantages were a good structure, good class/id selectors, pre-themed admin forms. But what about
- performance ?
- unused preprocess function consequences ?
- css "over charging issues" ?
- (sub)theme development speed ?
- hidden difficulties ?
I googled to try to find a discussion about it, but I didn't get any luck on that.

So question is : what do you think about this ?

++
Marc
