In June 2026, the humanitarian crisis in Chad worsened as the country hosted 2.26 million forcibly displaced people, including over 934,000 Sudanese refugees, while food insecurity during the lean season threatened 3 million individuals, exacerbating protection risks like gender-based violence (GBV) and child marriage. Military activity in Lac Province caused the fresh displacement of approximately 60,300 people, and a critical GBV crisis emerged in the Fouli and Kaya departments due to women having to travel over two kilometres for water, which exposed them to high risks of physical and sexual violence. Additionally, a new cholera outbreak declared on 18 June in the Karal District threatened to limit the delivery of essential sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services and confidential GBV responses.
UNFPA responded by deploying 127 midwives across the country, with 97 of them stationed in humanitarian areas to support health facilities in the east, south, and Lac Province. These midwives were instrumental in providing comprehensive SRH care, including assisting 2,518 safe births, conducting 9,452 antenatal consultations, and reaching 4,509 women with family planning services. UNFPA also addressed GBV through case management in multiple provinces, operating 11 safe spaces that supported 933 women and girls, conducting awareness sessions for 4,959 people, and providing capacity-building training on cash transfers for survivors to 19 staff members.
As of the end of June 2026, UNFPA has secured US 2ドル.5 million toward its 18ドル.7 million requirement, leaving a staggering funding gap of 87%. UNFPA is urgently appealing for critical funding for Chad to address the scale and urgency of the humanitarian needs, particularly for women and girls who require life-saving SRH and protection services.
