Results in South Sudan

South Sudan, which gained independence in 2011, struggles with challenges including poor access to health facilities, a shortage of skilled birth attendants and a high maternal death rate. Active since 2006, with full-fledged operations starting in 2012, UNFPA supports initiatives to build the health system and to develop capacities for providing reproductive health care, including through training midwives. Other measures seek to prevent gender-based violence, and to develop systems to produce and use demographic data for development.

Result achieved in 2024

1

The Gender-Based Violence Information Management System was improved with over 10,000 gender-based violence incidents recorded from 21 data-gathering organizations, enabling quarterly trend analysis and evidence-based programming

2

Over 200,000 adolescents and young people accessed sexual and reproductive health services and 34 health facilities provided adolescent-responsive care

3

The modern contraceptive prevalence rate for married women nearly doubled from 4.8 to 9.4 per cent, resulting in 59,000 unintended pregnancies prevented, 19,000 unsafe abortions averted and 640 maternal deaths averted

4

12 Health Science Institutes met minimum standards for pre-service training, with 1,800 health professionals completing final exams and 1,046 nurses and midwives registered and licensed

5

141 Community Action Groups were established, implementing gender-based violence prevention and response actions across 10 states, engaging 772 traditional leaders and reaching over 82,700 community members

6

Over 11 million people accessed sexual and reproductive health/gender-based violence/HIV services including 480,000 life-saving services for vulnerable populations in humanitarian settings

Technical notes and sources
  • The results featured here are only a selection of key results in line with strategic plan 2014-17 indicators. The selection does not reflect the full picture of all results achieved during the strategic plan cycle by UNFPA programme countries.
  • The source of data for most country level indicators is the UNFPA country annual reports for 2014-2017, unless stated otherwise
  • Results featured are cumulative - i.e., achieved between the 2014 and 2017 timeframe, and reflect the net situation, true as of the year selected
  • Majority of the results are captured from 127 UNFPA programme countries
  • Indicators that are marked ‘not achieved’ could imply any of the following conditions:
    • The country may have achieved the result without the support of UNFPA
    • The country has not targeted the given indicator during the 2014-2017 period
    • UNFPA is supporting this area of work, but the result has not yet been achieved
