Results in Bolivia (Plurinational State of)

One of Latin America’s poorest nations, Bolivia faces lags in progress on development indicators including maternal health. UNFPA aims to strengthen public policies to uphold the universal right to access reproductive and sexual health services. Programmes help empower indigenous women, girls, adolescents and young people to exercise their rights; initiatives also encourage social movements to help shape public policies. Other efforts focus on including age-appropriate comprehensive sexuality education in schools, and on strengthening government capacities to produce and use population data.

Result achieved in 2024

1

Seven policies, plans and regulations were developed to ensure coverage, access and quality of sexual and reproductive health services and gender-based violence prevention, including three national regulatory instruments and four subnational regulations

2

Seven civil society and institutional mechanisms were strengthened, including a civil society platform (348 Alert), four municipal roundtables and two dialogue platforms on bodily autonomy, sexual and reproductive health and rights and safe motherhood/births

3

The 2024 Population and Housing Census was completed in full compliance with international recommendations and standards

4

Four specific care guides and a gender-based violence care protocol were approved by the Technical Protection and Gender Working Group for addressing vulnerable populations during humanitarian events, including adolescents, women, children and people with disabilities

5

Nine municipalities improved contraception needs quantification through computer tools with analysis from administrative records, while five municipalities implemented significant actions to improve obstetric and neonatal care with an intercultural approach

6

An out-of-school comprehensive sexuality education strategy was developed and implemented in four municipalities, including capacity building for health personnel

Technical notes and sources
  • The results featured here are only a selection of key results in line with strategic plan 2014-17 indicators. The selection does not reflect the full picture of all results achieved during the strategic plan cycle by UNFPA programme countries.
  • The source of data for most country level indicators is the UNFPA country annual reports for 2014-2017, unless stated otherwise
  • Results featured are cumulative - i.e., achieved between the 2014 and 2017 timeframe, and reflect the net situation, true as of the year selected
  • Majority of the results are captured from 127 UNFPA programme countries
  • Indicators that are marked ‘not achieved’ could imply any of the following conditions:
    • The country may have achieved the result without the support of UNFPA
    • The country has not targeted the given indicator during the 2014-2017 period
    • UNFPA is supporting this area of work, but the result has not yet been achieved
