「おい!」
およそ人間離れした、黒柴のような見た目をしていて、身長は185センチと高い彼の心を。
「おい!聞いてんのかよ!」
「え?......あ、なんでしょう」

That saved a wretch like me

一つの雫が深く森で隠された山の頂上に落ちる。酸性の雨だ。これが何十年と続くと、森なんてあっという間に禿げてしまう。ほら、一つの葉が白くなった。

I once was lost, but now am found

「おい、そこのうすのろ!こいつを運んで廊下を何往復かして来い!」
「あ......、わかりました......」

山肌は見えない。依然として木々が覆ってしまっている。しかしながら、炭酸カルシウムの白い山肌はいともたやすく溶かされてゆく。

重いものを運んで、薄暗く蛍光灯の照らす廊下を歩く。足の肉球に大理石の冷たさがしみてゆく。靴がどんなものだったのかは、もう忘れてしまった。
「またあんなことをやらされてんのか。SCiP擬きめ、おれはお前に同情なんてしないぞ」

彼の心を照らす太陽は存在しない。陰鬱な雲が、窒素酸化物の雨をただ黙々と降らせているのみだ。木々が風に揺れ、雨が樹皮を焦がす。

もう、どうでもいい。ここに来てからはずっと散々な目に遭ってきたんだ。人としての尊厳はない、ただのけものになってしまった。もう、どうでもいい。

哀愁の風が吹く。傲慢な嵐の前兆に違いない。黒く巨大な積乱雲が熱く酸い雨を降らせる。御覧の通りに、山頂近くの木は全て枯れてしまった。溶けた石灰岩に緩やかな谷が刻まれる。

様々な仕打ちを受けた。無視から始まって、使い走り、暴言などは当たり前。意味のないことをやらされたり、タバコの火を押し付けられたり、果てには様々な類の欲望もぶつけられた。

「おい、もうやめろ!お前の汚い手でそいつが汚れちまう!」
喉の奥からは辛うじて沈黙を引き出せた。その静けさたるや、清流の如く。


土なども無用と言わんばかりに小川はやがて濁流へと身をやつしてゆく。相変わらず酸く、生きるものを拒む川だ。

彼の心はもう疲弊しきっていた。残るのはただ暗い影のみ。

山にあるべき豊かさや光はとうに消え、ただ枯れた木と無機質な岩のみが残ってしまっている。

それすらも、無惨にあさましく削り去っていく。本来あるべき姿でない川が。谷は深く盲目に切り込んでゆく。うすら灰色の山は川に溶け込まされて灰塵すら残らない。

「どうしたの?」
「いや、なんでもない。大丈夫です。ほんとに」
僅かに恵みの雨が降る時もあるだろう。しかし滑らかな岩肌には何も染み込まない。背中の毛が抜け落ちてゆく。
適当な理由を並べ立てて買った麻のロープを固く結ぶ。

幾万の時をたたえた山の影すら人々の記憶から消えてしまった。酸い川はいつしか扇の端で大河と合流する。

糞尿や産業廃棄物が酸い大河にそそがれる。行く先は無限の海ただ一つ。
