Perl is still relevant in 2024

Perl, is a programming language that holds a special place in the hearts of many IT professionals.

It has been around for quite some time and has proven its worth in various domains of software development.

In 2024, Perl continues to be a language worth learning for several reasons. Firstly, it offers a rich set of built-in functions and libraries that make it a powerful tool for handling complex tasks. Whether you're working on web development, system administration, or network programming, Perl has got your back.

One of the main reasons why Perl remains relevant is its unmatched ability to manipulate text and perform regular expressions. This makes it a go-to language for tasks like data parsing, text processing, and log file analysis. In fields where dealing with large amounts of unstructured data is common, Perl's flexibility proves to be a game-changer.

Moreover, Perl's community is vibrant and supportive. It has a dedicated group of developers who actively contribute to its growth and provide extensive documentation and resources. This ensures that learning Perl becomes an enjoyable and collaborative journey.

Another good thing: Perl is pre-installed on most Unix-like systems, including Apple's macOS and various Linux distributions. This means that when you work on these operating systems, you can start using Perl right away without the need for additional installations or configurations.

However, when it comes to Windows machines, Perl is not included by default.

Additionally, many legacy systems and applications still rely on Perl. By acquiring Perl skills, you can maintain and enhance these existing systems, opening up opportunities for job stability and career growth.

Furthermore, Perl's versatility and cross-platform compatibility make it an excellent choice for scripting tasks across different operating systems. Whether you're working on Windows, Linux, or other Unix-like systems, Perl can be your trusted companion.

Perl remains and will remain a language of great importance in the IT industry, even in the year 2024. Its robust capabilities, text processing prowess, and active community make it a language worth learning for aspiring developers. So, don't hesitate to embark on your Perl journey and embrace the opportunities it offers.

Happy coding!

Looking for 'Out of space' issue #1 on the web

As an search practice, here is a little hands-on search training

the goal is to find the 'golden comics' issue of "Out of this world" number 1 published in 1950

What we know about this issue is that it features the first appearance of Crom.

Go ...

Step 1:

- google https://www.google.com/search?q=out%20of%20this%20world%20issue%201

will return a lot of information on the magazine itself

it was drawn partly by Joe Kubert

contains an adventure called 'Lunar Station' for 10 pages

but where is the comics itself?

Step 2:

- google https://www.google.com/search?q=out+of+this+world+issue+1+pdf+download

from there switch to https://digitalcomicmuseum.com

Step 3:

From there we discover that there was another book called 'Out of this World adventures' but this one is not featuring Crom

and lower we found the comic

https://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=12606

Bingo!

click on 'Preview" and Enjoy!

1980

Life in 1980, there was no internet, the most entertaining things to do was to listen to audio tapes, watch TV, if you were lucky to watch a movie from a VHS tape, then go outdoor fishing, walking, hiking, exploring places.

And driving, that was the life back then.

A month salary would get you a decent rent, good food, and you could use some of the money for travelling abroad, all communication were either wired phone, or snail mail.

Ordering online was not a thing obviously, some project needed solid research, and you would be heading to the local library, or asking a teacher, schools were very strict.

The greatest movies were made, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, ...

It was the cold war, the Ruskies were the bad guys, and in 2022 they still are...

What you needed to succeed was to be a good student, having a good cultural knowledge. Then having a good understanding of business. Have math skills.

If you had an idea, wrote a book, if you had a tune in your head, you would play for a couple of friends, if you wanted to write poetry, you would just fill a notebook, but there was no way to reach any large audience, unless you had some kind of a contact out there to introduce you to the right person.

The information were diffused by 2 or 3 channels, there were little interaction between people abroad, except for specific travelers, business person, ...

Life was simpler, 10 years before that people were having large epiphanies back in the 1970 ; I will write something about that period another time.

It was also the first time, people were informed about the dependency on Oil, and how the Oil would eventually lack in the future.
