Corneria
Corneria, an Earth-like planet in the Lylat System, is home to an abandoned army base. There are still radar installations, archways, elevated freeways, and buildings to be found -- but Andross's forces have caused a lot of damage. A waterfall hides a secret passage to another location.
The first level in Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2, Corneria, features an introduction of many of the game's systems, such as speeding up and slowing down to avoid obstacles, doing a barrel roll, and the concept of branching paths as there are two different bosses here. If you're going for medals, check the periphery and behind buildings for giant robots known as Garudas carrying large beams or attempting to destroy structures -- they are worth six hit points each.
Enter Star Fox
As with all the levels in this shooter, hit as many enemies as possible, using lock-on shots as often as possible when encountering clustered groups or enemies that fly across your path.
You'll start above the ocean, with airborne attackers flying in from a distance. Lock-on and fire, then follow up with rapid fire to take down all of them. You'll get a Laser upgrade as a reward.
Slippy will have a bogey on his tail. Save him with a well-timed shot. Slow down to take down the attackers in the canyon.
You will now enter Corneria City. Lock on to one of the four fighters that appear and blast them all to get a Silver Ring.
Fly through the first gate to get a golden ring and immediately bank left and start shooting the closed gate on the next arch. Inside, you will find a Bomb pick-up.
Shoot the two tanks driving on the road to get another Silver Ring. There's another one under the freeway just ahead to the left.
Supply Rings
Groups of enemies and gaps between buildings and gates are often opportunities to get a Silver or Gold Ring reward. If something looks conspicuous, it's usually there for a reason.
Go vertical to slip past the damaged buildings and pick up a Bomb power-up.
Look sharp for a Garuda robot trying to push over a building just ahead of you. Use your lock-on from far away and fire away to destroy the robot or hit your turbo, allowing you to safely pick up the Laser upgrade. Garudas are worth six points, so blast as many as you can.
There are two more tanks on the road. Destroy them for another Silver Ring, then follow the freeway to a Gold Ring.
Blast the three tanks on the raised freeway and pick up the Silver Ring below.
When you get an enemy warning, hit the brakes and shoot them down for a Silver Ring.
You'll see another Garuda robot -- blast it and fly through the explosion to get a Bomb power-up.
The next gate houses a Silver Ring, with a Bomb power-up hidden in the next gate after that. You'll get to a checkpoint ring. If you crash, you'll restart from here.
Blast another set of three tanks on the road to get a Silver Ring.
Decision Point: Meteo or Sector Y
There are two possible paths to complete this stage: Path 1 leads to Meteo and Path 2 to Sector Y. As this point in the stage, you have to make sure you meet the first of two requirements so you can take the alternate path to Sector Y.
Falco is put under pressure by enemy fighters. If you want to take the alternate exit and get a "Mission Accomplished" accolade, you'll have to save him. You have a few seconds before things get serious, so don't immediately engage and instead turn on the side and fly between the two metal buildings on the left. These types of maneuvers will make additional enemies appear that net you more points when locked-on to and shot down. Now boost forward, lock on, and rid Falco of his pursuers.
You'll have to make a choice after saving Falco: do you need a Laser upgrade or a Bomb? Hang left for the latter and stick to the right for the Laser.
Lock on to the destroy the four cannons on the bridge ahead and pick up the Gold Ring they leave behind.
Behind the bridge, you will face two Garuda robots throwing girders at you. Lock and blast the left robot, then take down the right one.
You'll be able to replenish your energy with a Silver Ring -- and, if your wings are damaged, pick up a Wing Repair item right afterwards.
You'll arrive at another waterlogged area, teeming with Ski Bots. These waterskimmers are worth 4 points each. Lock on to blast them and look for the first arch, which houses another Bomb pick-up. The last gate provides a Gold Ring.
If you fly through all seven rings here and you previously saved Falco, you will follow him through the waterfall to get to Path 2 -- otherwise, you'll continue on straight on Path 1.
Path 1: Face Granga
Requirement: Falco retired because you didn't save him early enough from his attackers and/or you didn't fly through all seven stone arches on the water.
You will continue to follow the main path straight and ignore the waterfall. If you saved Falco and flew through all the stone arches, you won't have a choice and you'll follow him through the waterfall automatically.
Blast the Fire Birds and the Mole Missiles that pop out of the ground to get Silver Rings and points. If you blast the Birds early, you can pick up unused bombs to replenish your arsenal.
You'll be able to pick up a Laser item. Look for vertically-stacked Gold Rings ahead while firing at the Fire Birds. One will leave behind a Bomb pick-up. As you reach the two rings, pull a loop maneuver to pick them both up.
You're now flying through a valley, locking on to and blasting groups of airborne fighters to get as many points as possible. The flight concludes with a Laser item and a Silver Ring that appears when you blast the three ships on the right side.
Granga Boss Battle
At the end of the path, you will face off with Granga, who is controlling a running mech. The battle will take place in All-Range mode, meaning you can freely fly around in a small arena and Granga can likewise run into all directions. Additionally, there are Granga Fighters flying around taking aim at you and your wingmen.
Secret 1-Up Arwing
Fly through Granga's legs and then loop around it without bumping into the mech and you'll get an extra life.
Peppy provides a hint: attack the mech from the back. But the legs are an even more effective target. Boost away, then slow down as you turn and head towards the mech. Fire rapidly at one of the legs and it'll eventually explode. This grounds the mech and it can no longer move around and come after you, even if it'll still fire missiles your way. Simply fly in for additional attack runs (slowing down to maximize your hits on target) and you'll quickly defeat this first boss.
Mission Complete
You will continue to Meteo.
Path 2: Through the Waterfall
Requirement: Shoot down Falco's attackers when he calls for help and fly through all seven stone arches on the water.
A lock-on shot saves Falco from his attackers. As a thanks, he will lead you to a hidden area. Follow him to fly through the waterfall and you'll be able to take down a few more enemies on the way to an alternate boss battle.
Mole Missiles burst out of the ground and can be shot for points and Silver Rings. Blast the Fire Birds and avoid their fire column attacks.
Attack Carrier Boss Battle
The boss is an Attack Carrier. Star Fox (SNES) players will recognize it as the final Corneria boss in the original game. The carrier will attempt to ram Fox on the way in. Fly low to avoid collision then position yourself so that you can rapid-fire on the lower-right missile launcher. When it opens and you see the flashing interior, fire away. If you're fast enough, it'll immediately blow up and fall off.
Repeat this on the second missile launcher. This will trigger the final attack phase, where the carrier goes on an attack run. Fire at the main body immediately and you can take it down before it can head your way. You will get a total of 11 points for downing the ship.
Mission Accomplished
You will continue to Sector Y.
Corneria Medal Rewards and Requirements
To complete the medal requirement, you should have 139 points when entering the boss battle. You'll get credited with +1 hit on the boss and +10 points upon victory.
The key to getting to the 150 "kills" mark is to lock-on to enemy groups to help take down as many with your charged shots as possible, then immediately following up with rapid fire to clear out more. Fly in between buildings to cause additional enemies to appear and prioritize high-value targets that give hit bonuses, such as the larger robots tossing girders or skimming across the water.
