Queen Mother

Updated:

The Queen Mother is the Mother of all Xenomorphs in the Alien franchise. The one ruler to rule them all, if you will. That includes every Drone, every Chestburster, every Facehugger, and even every Queen Xenomorph. The Queen Mother is a unique specimen, and in most cases, only one can exist at any given time.

Queen Mother Biology

The Queen Mother is a unique being with an equally unique crest. The Queen Mothers crest is different to any other Xenomorph's, featuring long ridges and tendrils to intimidate her foes, provide protection, and solidify her place at the very top of the Xenomorph ranks.

Queen Mothers, the rarest Xenomorph form, can dwarf any other Xenomorph Queen. They are depicted as being absolutely massive monsters, capable of sawing through heavy machinery and hoards of soldiers with ease. Queen Mothers grow with their hive, so if their hive continues to expand, so will they, making them horrendously dangerous creatures. They still have the power of any other Xenomorph — and then some. Combining that with their potentially exponential size creates an extremely unsettling thought.

The Xenomorph Queen Mother sits inside a massive nest surrounded by her faithful warrior minions and several large Royal Jelly deposits. Royal Jelly plays a key role in the creation of Xenomorph Praetorians, Queens, and Queen Mothers.

When needed, Xenomorphs can consume Royal Jelly to trigger a metamorphosis that transforms them from a regular Drone into whatever role the hive needs most at that time. In most cases, this would be a Praetorian, a specialized warrior force designed to protect the Queen.

In some cases, a new Queen can be created via Royal Jelly, but only if something happens to the Queen that already exists. Only one Queen can safely rule each hive unless an Empress is present. Some sources have depicted multiple Queens emerging in the same hive if the hive gets big enough, but this usually results in a fight for control between the two Queens, effectively reducing the amount back to one eventually, anyway.

The only being in control of multiple Queens is the Queen Mother herself or an Empress. In the same vein, if something were to happen to the Queen Mother, a new one would be created in her place using the same Royal Jelly.

While Xenomorph Queens do possess a sort of hive mind and are able to remotely direct their subordinates, the Queen Mother's hive mind is even stronger than that. She is able to communicate with any Xenomorph via her hive mind, which is far more developed than any other Queen's, stretching far beyond mere hive coordination. In addition to that, she can also communicate telepathically with non-Xenomorph species via her hive mind and dream manipulation.

Queen Mother Origins

The Queen Mother rules over the Xenomorph from their homeworld, known as Xenomorph Prime, G-435m, or sometimes Hiveworld. This is the planet that all Xenomorphs originated from, according to some Alien franchise media, but not all.

The Alien movies suggest that Xenomorphs were actually created, either wholly or in part, by a Synthetic character named David who hijacked Black Goo and bio-engineering designs from the Engineers. This origin theory is at obvious odds with the idea of a Xenomorph home planet.

It doesn't stop there, either. There are even more Xenomorph origin stories to explore, like the AvP Xenomorph origin story, for example. It is important to note that all three origin stories come from canon media sources, so they are all as important as each other.

Regardless of the Xenomorph origin story you personally prefer, the Xenomorph Prime one is the most popular in the Alien franchise comics. Comics like Aliens: Outbreak and Alien: The Theory of Alien Propagation explore the idea that Xenomorphs evolved organically on their home planet.

Xenomorph Prime is said to be a very inhospitable environment. This, coupled with the competition from other predator creatures on the planet, forced the species to become extremely efficient and violent in order to survive. This is what led to the Xenomorphs becoming such brilliant predators, especially when they’re placed in confined spaces filled with soft and squishy humans.

This theory removes all meddling from outside sources and explores how the species would have naturally developed on their hostile planet. In addition to being mentioned in the comics, Xenomorph Prime is also explored in concept art for things like the 2010 Alien vs. Predator video game.

Queen Mother Appearances

As the existence of the Queen Mother on Xenomorph Prime is at odds with the Alien movie stories, for example, she does not appear on film or physically in any video games. She can, however, be found in many of the comics!
