The Offspring is one of the most disturbing mutations in the Alien franchise. It is a one-off species born from a chain of unfortunate events that took place in 2024's Alien: Romulus. The Offspring is a towering creature that is far too human for comfort and will hopefully never be created again.
The Offspring doesn't have a home planet per se, as it was an unfortunate abomination that was born on an abandoned science outpost in Alien: Romulus. In the 2024 Alien movie Romulus, a group of young adults located an abandoned Weyland Yutani research outpost called Renaissance floating near the planet they lived on. Although, living might be a bit of a stretch. It's more accurate to say they were merely surviving while being worked like horses for seemingly no gain at the Wey-Yu mining colony of Jackson's Star.
The makeshift crew formulated a plan to take over the ship and use the onboard cryo-pods to fly to Yvaga III so they could start a new life.
What they didn't know was that the Renaissance was abandoned for a reason. During their explorations on the ship, they unknowingly triggered a lockdown and released all of the XenomorphFacehuggers that were onboard the ship being studied.
The Offspring, however, did not come from the Xenomorphs. It was, instead, a result of the mysterious DNA mutagen called Black_Goo. Black Goo was first explored in 2012's Prometheus, where it was established as a bio-weapon created by an ancient alien race known as the Engineers. Its purpose was to both create and destroy life.
The Weyland Yutani crew on board the Renaissance was studying this mutagen, having reverse engineered it from Xenomorph XX121, believing it would improve the human species and evolve people for deep space colonization. One member of the group of thieves that boarded the Renaissance was Kay Harrison. Kay was pregnant at the time, and believing that the Black Goo could somehow heal her dire wounds while she struggled to make to a cryopod, she injected herself with the unpredictable substance - dubbed Z-01 but the Renaissance's synthetic science officer Rook.
The Black Goo rampaged through her system, taking over the fetus that was inside her uterus and mutating it to create the horrendous Offspring.

Offspring Biology
The life cycle of the Offspring is extremely odd and due to the unique nature of its birth and its short life, there is still a lot we don't know about it. What we do know, however, is that the Offspring of the Renaissance had three main life phases: the cocoon, the infant stage, and its adult form.
The cocoon is what was created inside Kay's uterus after she injected herself with the Black Goo DNA mutagen. The mutagen caused a cocoon or Ovomorph-like egg to envelop the fetus, where it was then even further mutated by the Goo.
As the Black Goo took over, it rapidly increased the gestation period of Kay's fetus, causing her to give birth extremely early. Instead of giving birth to a healthy baby, however, she gave birth to an ovomorph-like cocoon.
The cocoon has a thick outer skin that resembles that of an Ovomorph. It also has one, long slit down the middle that slowly peels open, allowing the alien baby to free itself. The entire cocoon seems to secrete an acid that melts right through the floor of the ship. This is possibly connected to the acidic blood that has become a trademark of aliens bred from Black Goo in the Alien franchise.
The Infant Stage
Once the cocoon egg was expelled from Kay's body, the infant alien fetus inside began to break out of the casing. It was then that we got the first look at what the Black Goo created inside of Kay, and it was extremely disturbing.
The mutated fetus inside the cocoon looks almost exactly like a normal human baby. That is the most alarming part. Of course, as we are introduced to its later stages, the baby is anything but normal. But while inside the cocoon, it almost looks cute. The humanity that the baby seems to possess causes Rain to hesitate before killing it, giving it a chance to melt straight through the floor into the ship's cargo hold and escape.
The infant was not lost for long, but the short minutes that it was were enough time for it to fully mature into its adult form. This is the most nightmarish phase of the Offspring's short life.
When fully grown, the Offspring becomes a towering humanoid creature with arms far too long for comfort, grey, fleshy skin, and a long Xenomorph-like tail. It seems to have far more human qualities than any other alien variety seen in the franchise so far, including the Newborn. The first thing it did upon escaping from its egg was to search for Kay, its Mother, so it could breastfeed.
After she gave birth, Kay started secreting a sticky black substance from her breasts that is reminiscent of the thick goo left behind by Xenomorphs. The Offspring began its hunt for Kay almost immediately, unleashing a long tube from its mouth that it used to consume this mysterious goo or alien milk.
As a unique being, the Offspring has a couple of interesting features to examine. First are the gaping holes in its back. The purpose of the holes is not known for sure, but they could be unique breathing organs similar to those on the Xenomorph. Instead of using lungs to breathe, Xenomorphs have a series of long tube-like vents that protrude from their back that they use for that purpose. The Offspring doesn't have tubes, but it does have holes in a similar location.
The second interesting and ambiguous feature is the X-shaped opening that the Offspring has in place of its genitals. This hasn't been seen in any alien species so far, even the more humanoid mutations, so it is hard to decipher its purpose or meaning without observing more of the creature's behavior.
The X could be more of a metaphor than a useful physical attribute, symbolizing the alien's erasure of natural reproductive processes in favor of the forced impregnation of unwilling hosts.
The Offspring is easily one of the most disturbing mutations in the Alien universe. This is because of the grotesque amalgamation of human and alien features that it has, inspiring a terrifying Uncanny Valley feel. The Offspring itself doesn't seem to know where it sits, either, exhibiting a strange combination of both human and Xenomorph qualities.
One example is the Offspring's extremely unsettling smile. This could be a result of the Xenomorph drive to bare its teeth to its prey as an intimidating show of strength. Humans, however, intimidate and show anger through their eyes rather than baring their teeth. This resulted in an awkward and spine-tingling smile that was terrifyingly odd and eerily misplaced.
Offspring Appearances
The Offspring was a one-off abomination rather than a thriving alien species. Therefore, it only appears on screen in 2024's Alien: Romulus. It also appears in Alien: Romulus's official novelization but doesn't appear in any more comics or video games from the Alien franchise.
