Kaail is the most influential Predator in the AvP franchise. While his story has been a legend amongst Predators for years, it is most thoroughly explored in the Predator: Hunting Grounds video game. Kaail, also known as the Alpha Predator, is often heralded as the original Predator or the first of the Yautja.
Kaail Origins
Kaail's origin story can be followed right back to the origins of the Yautja in general. The Yautja, a proud, technologically advanced, and warrior-like race, were not always portrayed as they are in Alien vs. Predator media. They came from humble beginnings, evolving from their reptilian predecessors that lived in the swamps of Yautja Prime, their home planet.
You cannot explore the origins of the Yautja without first taking a look at another insectoid race called the Amengi. The Amengi were tall, cockroach-like creatures that completely destroyed their own home by carelessly evolving their technology without sparing a thought for the resources of their planet.
Once the Amengi had completely obliterated their planet's natural resources and reduced it to a barren wasteland unfit for life, they took their advanced technology and started the hunt for other planets to conquer and rename as their home. One of the many planets the Amengi invaded was Yautja Prime.
Before the Yautja were known as Predators, they were called the Hish Qu Ten. The Hish were the direct predecessors of the Yautja and were far more primitive than their warrior relatives. This made it simple for the Amengi to take over their planet and abuse them.
The Amengi imprisoned the Hish Qu Ten, forcing them to perform manual labor jobs, be subject to horrendous experiments, and even act as a food source for the Amengi. One of the most poignant tortures they were subjected to, however, was the primitive gladiator-style fights that the Amengi forced the Yautja to partake in. These fights directly impacted the Yautja they would become, acting as a sort of gladiatorial awakening that lit the fires that would feed their warrior customs in the future.
The Amengi inadvertently raised an incredibly powerful warrior Hish, named Kaail. Kaail was unique in many ways, most obviously in terms of his albino appearance. But he was also unique in the sense that he was the Hish's salvation — the only one strong enough to rise up against their Amengi captors and start the war that they would inevitably win, thus liberating the Hish who went on to become the Yautja, a proud, warrior race.
Kaail Biology
After liberating the Hish Qu Ten on Yautja Prime, the species was allowed the time and freedom to slowly evolve and develop their own customs, eventually becoming the Yautja we know and love today. As the 'first' Predator, Kaail shared the same physical life cycle as later specimens. He also directly influenced the milestones and metaphorical life cycle that Predators live by.
Predators have less of an emphasis on biological life phases than the Xenomorph, placing more importance on ritualistic milestones instead. They are humanoid creatures with a blend of insect-like attributes, namely their mandibles that jut outward and are tipped with razor-sharp fangs. Yautja does not hatch from eggs like Xenomorphs but is born as a baby by their mothers. They then go on to reach a series of ranks based on their prowess as warriors.
Predators begin their lives with the title Unblooded. An Unblooded Predator is a young or juvenile one who is still learning and developing their skills in hunting and fighting. Once they reach maturity, they must hunt and kill prey that is deemed worthy, usually a Xenomorph, to prove themselves. This is a rite of passage and an incredibly important part of Predator society.
Once they have completed a successful hunt, they become Blooded and earn their place among their peers. From there, a Predator that continues honing their expertise and specializing in defeating enemies can become an Elite or a Hunter. These are highly trained Yautja who are entrusted with taking down more serious threats.
The Predator from Alien vs. Predator: Requiem was an Elite Yautja known as the Wolf Predator. There are a few things about the Wolf Predator that set him apart from the Unblooded Predators from 2004's Alien vs. Predator.
The first is that he was sent to the planet alone. The situation on Earth was not a rite of passage ritual, making it clear that he was not an Unblooded trying to prove himself worthy. The strength, advanced weaponry, and intelligence that the Wolf Predator exhibited showed that he was a trained warrior.
The Best Alien Universe Comics
After reaching the rank of Elite or Hunter, some Predators may rise even further to become clan leaders or Elders. Then comes the last rank, Alpha or Ancient. These Yautja are incredibly rare, having unmatched qualities that allow them to become legends of their kind. These types of Predators are revered, almost like Gods.
An example of an Alpha Predator is Kaail. Kaail, also known as Alpha, liberated the Yautja species from the Amengi and solidified his rank as one of the most legendary of his kind.
Kaail Appearances
Kaail was an individual rather than representing a whole species like any old Xenomorph, for example. Therefore, his specific story is not referenced as much as the Predators as a whole, but you can find it if you know where to look!
