Hey everyone,
I’m really frustrated that I bought Crossover.
First, I tried playing Skyrim SE, but quickly ran into the well-known double mouse cursor issue that still hasn’t been fixed. So I thought I’d give Fallout 4 a shot instead.
At first everything seemed fine, but now after reaching level 12, the game keeps crashing. I can start it up normally and reach the main screen, but whenever I load any save, the game just freezes – only the background music keeps playing. There’s no way to fix it: I already tried changing graphics modes, tested every single option, but nothing works. Right now I’m reinstalling Fallout 4 again, but honestly, I’ve lost hope.
I bought Crossover mainly because I wanted to play some older Bethesda titles on my Mac Mini M4 Pro, but at this point it feels pretty useless for that purpose. Skyrim SE doesn’t work properly, Fallout 4 crashes – and that’s exactly the kind of games I was hoping to enjoy.
At this point I’m honestly considering asking for a refund, because for Bethesda RPGs Crossover just seems broken.
Has anyone managed to get Skyrim SE or Fallout 4 stable on Apple Silicon with Crossover? Or is it simply not worth the hassle?
Thanks in advance.
Sorry to hear about your issues. I've indeed played both games using (earlier versions of) CrossOver. I did make some tweaks based on feedback from others (e.g. a couple guides on YouTube), but that's not uncommon--especially for older titles. Sadly, I cannot speak to the cursor issue because I use a controller for most games.
Some Bethesda games are notoriously problematic for CrossOver, especially the games from id and/or games using id Tech engines. Historically the graphic pipelines for these games are natively OpenGL/Vulkan and don't play as nicely as DirectX games. For instance, their Unreal engine based games have rather good results, whereas their games using internal/proprietary engines have mixed results. With that said, I believe that both games you mentioned use their Creation Engine and have ~reasonably solid results.
TLDR: I don't recall having issues playing those titles, w/ older versions of CrossOver (v23/24).
You can always create a ticket w/ the CrossOver support team. They are usually very responsive, and may have some recommended tweaks/details for those two games in particular.
I was planning on purchasing a new license because I had no problems with Fallout 4 in the past. I installed a trial of 25.x on Tahoe and I'm getting lots of corrupted saves and eventually end up unable to play at all.
