Summary[ ]
Cleaning up the castle[ ]
Even Spike curls up with a good book now and then.
One night at the Golden Oak Library, Twilight Sparkle is awakened by the light of a lamp and finds Spike reading a comic book nearby. He enthusiastically recounts the plot: the Power Ponies must stop the Mane-iac from powering up her doomsday device, which she is only able to do thanks to a mistake from the Ponies' bumbling sidekick Hum Drum. Twilight reminds Spike that they have a full day ahead of fixing up the Castle of the Two Sisters but eventually allows him stay up and read for a few more minutes.
The next day, Twilight and Spike join up with the rest of the Mane Six at the royal sisters' old castle and begin cleaning. When Spike offers to help, however, he finds that the ponies are already taking care of everything and heads off to read his comic in another room, feeling like a needless sidekick to their operation.
Yet another door to a different world.
Spike opens his comic to where he left off the night before but is bewildered to find the following page blank aside from a footnote scribbled in the corner. As the Mane Six approach the room announcing a break from cleaning, Spike reads aloud the words on the page:
- "You can return to the place you started when the Mane-iac is defeated. Take a closer look to join the adventure in this book."
- — Spike
The comic suddenly glows with a bright light and begins sucking Spike into its open pages as if through a portal. The ponies enter the room and rush over to pull him out only to be dragged along with him as he disappears into the book.
Welcome to Maretropolis[ ]
"Holy new personas, ponies!"
Spike finds himself atop a skyscraper and recognizes the city around him as Maretropolis, the setting of the Power Ponies comic. He looks around and sees the Mane Six next to him wearing attire that matches the look of the story's main characters.
Meet the malevolent Mane-iac!
Before the group can assess their new identities, they hear an explosion on the street below and see the Mane-iac emerge from a smoldering museum door holding an electrical orb. Spike tells the Mane Six that they've become the Power Ponies from his comic and explains that the only way to leave is to defeat the Mane-iac, though their efforts to confront the villain end in failure as they bumble through their newfound powers. Spike manages to retrieve the orb, but when he accidentally drops it after tripping on his cape, the Mane-iac addresses him as Hum Drum and mocks him as she retakes the artifact and runs off.
The Mane Six eventually regroup and determine to face the Mane-iac at her headquarters. Twilight tries to reassure Spike that he isn't actually Hum Drum, though he remains dispirited when the ponies vow to handle the issue by themselves.
The Mane-iac's headquarters[ ]
The Mane-iac's home turf.
Spike leads the group to a shampoo factory serving as the Mane-iac's headquarters. The ponies contend with and manage to subdue a group of henchmen, but when they try to confront the Mane-iac herself, she sprays them with the "hairspray ray of doom" that freezes them in place and renders their powers useless. Deemed "pointless" to attack with the hairspray, Spike watches as his friends are carried helpless into the factory.
Spike uses an air duct to sneak into the factory, where he finds the Mane Six inside a large cage as a henchman regularly re-sprays them with the hairspray ray of doom. Though initially doubtful of his ability to help, he becomes encouraged when he hears the ponies express confidence in him and sets about preparing a trap. Meanwhile, the Mane-iac places the stolen electrical orb into a large device that she says will cause the manes of the city's residents to grow wild.
As the Mane-iac brags about her victory over the Power Ponies, Spike uses the factory's gearworks to ensnare a group of henchmen before attacking the pony in charge of the hairspray ray of doom. Its freezing effect on the Mane Six wears off seconds later, allowing them to regain their powers and break free from the cage.
Once again, the day is saved[ ]
Don't you dare make Fluttershy angry.
In the ensuing melee between henchmen and Power Ponies, the Mane-iac swats away a firefly from the crosshairs of her doomsday device, causing Fluttershy to lose her temper and turn into a large, muscular monster. The Mane-iac responds by firing the device only to be hit with the projectile herself when it ricochets off of Fluttershy's face, causing her mane to coil around her like a straightjacket. Fluttershy proceeds to destroy the doomsday device as the other ponies prevail over the henchmen, though just as Spike declares the Power Ponies victorious, the group are suddenly teleported back to the castle reading room.
As the ponies revel in the success of their adventure, Twilight commends Spike for his heroism and explains that they still think he's helpful even if they don't always need his help, to which Spike adds that you don't need superpowers to be a super friend. He mentions finding the comic in a store for "enchanted" comic books in Canterlot, and as the group exit the room, the comic vanishes.
Quotes[ ]
- For more quotes, see the episode's transcript.
- Spike: Fluttershy! You're Saddle Rager! Lose your temper, and you'll turn into a huge super-strong monster!
- Fluttershy: Oh gosh! That wouldn't be very polite!
- Applejack: Lead the way, Spike!
- Rainbow Dash: Then leave the rest to us!
- Spike: [sigh]
- Twilight Sparkle: All right, Power Ponies, here's the plan. Rarity, you, me and—
- Rainbow Dash: Come on out, Mane-iac! Or the Power Ponies are comin' in!
- Twilight Sparkle: So much for "element of surprise".
- Applejack: Time to Power Pony up!
- Pinkie Pie: Ooh! Nice catchphrase!
- Mane-iac: Hum Drum? Little guy? No superpowers whatsoever? He's utterly useless! Puh-lease. Everypony knows you just keep him around because you feel sowwy for him. Wah. Wah.
- Twilight Sparkle: Maybe in your world. But in our world, Spike— uh, Hum Drum always comes through when we need him! Always!
- Rest of Power Ponies: [agreements]
- Spike: I'm not like Hum Drum! When my friends really need me, I do come through! And they need me now!
- Pinkie Pie: Cupcakes?
- Rarity: How did you—
- Pinkie Pie: Eh, we had a good half second before we got sucked back out of the comic, and the Maretropolis bakery was only sixty-five blocks away!
