Pinkie Pride is the twelfth episode of the fourth season of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic and the seventy-seventh episode overall. In this episode, Pinkie Pie is tasked with organizing Rainbow Dash's "birth-iversary", though the arrival of a second party thrower threatens to uproot both her plans and her reputation as Ponyville's premier party pony.
This is one of four musical episodes; the others are Magical Mystery Cure, Crusaders of the Lost Mark, and A Hearth's Warming Tail.
Production, development, and release[ ]
A teaser for the episode was screened at San Diego Comic-Con 2013, where Mike Vogel said, "somebody will give [Pinkie] a run for her partying money."[3] It was also revealed at SDCC that this will be a musical episode and Amy Keating Rogers is writing this episode. Show director Jayson Thiessen initially approached "Weird Al" Yankovic to do a guest role on Friendship is Magic on Twitter in April 2011,[4] and Yankovic's appearance was further teased when Al met with score composer William Anderson, who used to play harmonica and other instruments in Al's band, in August 2012.[5] Even though Al provided his voice, he did not play the accordion on any of the songs. The accordion was played by orchestrator Steffan Andrews.[6]
This is the second episode not to contain a score by Anderson after Magical Mystery Cure. Songwriter Daniel Ingram and Steffan Andrews instead handled the score of this episode.[7] [8] According to Amy Keating Rogers, she finished the episode around late August to early September 2012.[9] Ingram and Andrews were nominated for a 2014 Leo Award for their work on this episode for "Best Musical Score in an Animation Program or Series".[10]
The live-action segment of Boneless the rubber chicken dancing during The Goof Off was filmed by Thiessen in his basement. The puppet was made of balloons and rice.[11]
The Hub Network published a press release on December 23, 2013 which said the title of this episode would be "Three's a Crowd", but on the 26th it corrected the information and stated Three's A Crowd is a different episode altogether. The episode is labeled as the eleventh episode on iTunes and Google Play, with Google Play listing the date of this episode identical to Three's A Crowd.[12] [13] The episode was released on Google Play several hours prior to its airing on the Hub Network.
Summary[ ]
Next stop: Ponyville[ ]
Cheese Sandwich's first appearance.
Just outside Appleloosa, a stallion with a rubber chicken on his back looks on as a group of ponies and buffalo enjoy a party in town. While reflecting on his role in organizing the party, he experiences a full-body shiver and concludes that his next destination will be Ponyville.
While collecting party supplies around Ponyville, Pinkie Pie sings a song with the townsfolk celebrating her passion for and success in organizing parties. She joins the rest of the Mane Six at Sugarcube Corner and begins preparing materials to commemorate both the birthday of Rainbow Dash as well as the day she moved to Ponyville, guaranteeing Rainbow with a "Pinkie Party Promise" that the celebration will be the best she's ever had.
A new party pony in town[ ]
Pinkie meets Cheese Sandwich.
At that moment, the stallion with the rubber chicken appears before the ponies and introduces himself as Cheese Sandwich, Equestria's premiere party planner. Pinkie gladly accepts when Rainbow suggests that the two party planners work together, and Cheese expresses his eagerness to participate with a song about his party planning skills. The townsfolk get swept up in excitement over the newcomer's incredible parties and join Cheese as he leads them away from Sugarcube Corner, leaving Pinkie feeling forgotten.
Across town, Cheese Sandwich directs the construction of an elaborate new setup for the "birth-iversary" celebration, which Rainbow calls "epic" compared to Pinkie's "sweet" parties. A short time later, Twilight Sparkle finds Pinkie sulking in front of Sugarcube Corner and asks why she isn't helping with the party plans. Pinkie tries to appear casual and insists that Cheese doesn't need her help, though after Twilight departs, she mournfully questions her identity as a premier party planner.
- "After all, if Cheese really is the super duper-iest partying-est pony of them all, maybe that means... I'm... not."
- — Pinkie Pie
3:10 to goof off![ ]
Pinkie sings about her determination to become the one true party pony.
In a song, Pinkie considers taking on other roles before coming across photos of parties she threw in the past. She becomes encouraged upon recalling the success of these events and determines to regain her title of best party planner. In town, as the rest of the Mane Six praise Cheese's party plans, Pinkie suddenly appears among them and challenges Cheese to a "goof off", declaring that the winner will headline Rainbow Dash's party and be recognized as the ultimate party pony. Cheese accepts the challenge, and the two arrange to begin the contest in ten minutes.
Pinkie discovers the true meaning of laughter.
With the townsfolk and contestants gathered in the center of town, Twilight explains the contest rules: Cheese and Pinkie will try to amuse Rainbow through whatever silly means they choose until she declares one of them the winner. The two proceed to perform a musical number together involving various stunts and props, though after a giant piñata accidentally crashes into Rainbow, Pinkie realizes that her friend isn't having fun and halts the event. She declares that she broke her "Pinkie Party Promise" and forfeits, leaving Cheese the victor.
Joining forces[ ]
A short time later, the rest of the Mane Six find Pinkie at the edge of Ponyville preparing to leave with her belongings. They apologize for getting swept up in the excitement over Cheese Sandwich, though Pinkie asserts that he really is a great party planner, and that she shouldn't have interrupted the celebration to try to prove herself better. Rainbow clarifies that Cheese is only a guest party planner, and that Pinkie's place as the town's permanent party pony could never be taken.
Pinkie and Cheese decide to work together.
Cheese Sandwich arrives moments later and explains that he only meant to show Pinkie how great of a party planner he was rather than compete with her. In a song, Cheese reveals that he only decided to become a party planner after being so impressed by one of Pinkie's parties during his youth. Amazed and encouraged by the impact of her work, Pinkie eagerly agrees to join forces with Cheese in organizing Rainbow's birth-iversary celebration.
I didn't know a rubber chicken could do that. (They don't.)
At the party that evening, Pinkie Pie sings a birthday song as the residents of Ponyville enjoy the festivities. After Rainbow praises the party as "epic", Cheese Sandwich approaches Pinkie and gives her his rubber chicken as a memento before walking off into the sunset.
