Wikinews license update
There is a discussion (oldid link) on the English Wikinews about moving to either CC-BY 4.0 or CC-BY-SA 4.0 (we currently use CC-BY 2.5). Because of translations between the projects, it would make sense if all WN projects would change simultaneously, if at all - therefore I would move the discussion/vote over to Meta. WN projects are small, I don't expect more than a 100 votes, but still: is there a precedence for doing something like this on Meta? Or should we stick to a project-by-project system?
I have been thinking that maybe 3 votes from a project (language variant) could make the vote binding for that project, and each voter should indicate which project they are coming from. Could we make a decision binding, if within a certain period (let's say, 4 months) no votes come from a language branch?
We would also need help with summarizing the differences/changes between CC-BY 2.5 and CC-BY 4.0. Could you point to a good resource in this regard?
Any feedback would be welcome. - Xbspiro (talk) 02:26, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- In my opinion, there should be a global Requests for comment to discuss the proposal of Wikinews license update and notify all language Wikinews communities to participate in that RFC. Thanks. SCP -20 00 06:42, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

- To compare the differences between the Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) licenses version 2.5 and version 4.0, you can visit the official Creative Commons website. They provide the full legal text and license deeds for both versions, allowing you to examine the specific changes and improvements made from CC-BY 2.5 to CC-BY 4.0. Additionally, the website may offer documentation or guides that highlight key distinctions between the two versions, aiding in a comprehensive understanding of the modifications introduced in the newer license. Lack of updates on Movement Strategy
Supposedly, there are supposed to be updates for the Movement Strategy 2030. Somehow, I don't see an update since January or February of last year. I suppose the WMF should give us reasons for lack of progress. George Ho (talk) 00:52, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Category:Wikipedia by language
In the talk page of Category:Wikipedia by language I have argued why wikipedias should be named at least here in Meta with the name of the language (i.e. Wikipedia in Spanish), not ambiguously with the name of what can be understood as the name of nationality (Spanish Wikipedia). Contributions are wellcome to reach a consensus about this topic. Pompilos (talk) 12:49, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
Where can I ask for the intervention of the UcoC Coordinating Committee (U4C) for a systemic failure to follow the UcoC?
All the 6 sysops of Wikipedia in Aragonese have violated the UCoC (three actively and three passively), as I have exposed in this request for comments. They have insulted me repetedly, and have abused of their power, actions wich fits under "3.1.2 Systemic failure to follow the UcoC: Consistent local decisions that conflict with the UcoC" of the Policy:Universal Code of Conduct/Enforcement guidelines. WP:AN does not have an Arbitration Committee (ArbCom), and even if it did, I could not appeal to it because I have been blocked forever with no right of defense. I am willing to file the complaint to the U4C envisaged in the policy, but I cannot find on the foundation's website the place (email, URL or form) to do it. Please, does anyone know where can I file the complaint? Thank you. Pompilos (talk) 17:45, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
- As long as the U4C does not exist, you can not ask them. Sorry. Der-Wir-Ing ("DWI") talk 18:36, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
- Much of the UCOC system is still "under construction". There also seem to be multiple (related) components to your concern. An RFC here is the best mechanism to identify if an entire project's governance has failed, which could result in the removal of all administrators. Note, such an outcome would be a very rare type of conclusion. — xaosflux Talk 19:49, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
- Der-Wir-Ing and Xaosflux, thank you for your answers. I have already made a RFC, which has not yielded any results (no supervisor has been interested in the topic), maybe because its title was different to the one I used here. I have two additional questions: 1) I could start a new RFC with the clearer title "All 6 sysops of WP in Aragonese have violated the UCoC, 3 actively and 3 passively", but could this be considered a punishable case of insistence on the same topic? 2) On the other hand, in that RFC the user Lazaro d'Aragon, one of the WP:AN sysops denounced by me, has reiterated on Meta his offenses, attributing mental disorders to me (no matter if literally or metaphorically, it is against the UCoC): he uses once the expression "delusions" and another "sick phobia" to refer to opinions of mine that he does not agree. Can a Meta sysop delete the offensive expressions and reproach this user for them? Where do I have to ask for such an intervention? (If a steward who understands Spanish and Aragonese is needed, I have identified two: Hasley and MarcoAurelio; anyway, I asked for help or information to both and the first one told me he had no time and the second one didn't answer). Thanks again. Pompilos (talk) 10:55, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
- RFC's dealing with governance issues of an entire project generally take quite some time (many months+) and require agreement of many members of such a community. Please also keep in mind that no one has a "right" to contribute to any project. For conduct issues related to edits or actions here on the meta-wiki, you may ask for administrator intervention at RFH. — xaosflux Talk 14:51, 17 January 2024 (UTC)

Wiki films
I found casually a session on Wikipedia which name is something like "film of the day" ou "daily media". But I lost it! Could you please help me to found it again? Thank you very much. Vando Juvenal Tereza (talk) 04:24, 29 January 2024 (UTC)

- Well... It seems to be like you said. Searching for "film of day" I found the wiki "https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?search=film+of+day&title=Special:MediaSearch&go=Go&type=video" and then... It isn't a voilá, but it runs like if was. Thank you for answer me. Vando Juvenal Tereza (talk) 04:04, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

Dialects
Hi, Is there any way to handle dialects of a WP language in the user profile?
The idea is to be able to customize the text (via translatewiki or similar) without creating a new instance of WP. Dialects of a language usually only affect a small number of words or expressions and it is not worth having a new global corpus. But users appreciate reading the text adjusted to their dialect.
Thanks Amadalvarez (talk) 06:11, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, @Amire80. Any answer / suggestion ? Amadalvarez (talk) 07:07, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
- I don't have anything big to say about this. Several languages that are clearly affected by this: English, Portuguese, Catalan. There are definitely more.
- In English, everything just lives in the same Wikipedia. The policy is to keep the variety within one article consistent, and to try to make it consistent with the topic of the article (British if it's culturally British, for example), and with the first versions of the article when culture is irrelevant. It kind of makes sense, but it's not actually great, because it's very writer-oriented, and as you say, it's also the readers who want to read in an orthography that is comfortable for them. So the English solution may be good for the editors community, but it's not great for the users.
- Serbian (sr), Croatian (hr), Bosnian (bs), and Serbo-Croatian (sh) are largely the same language, with some minor differences in spelling and vocabulary (especially in Croatian), but for unfortunate historical and political reasons, they have four Wikipedias. This caused pretty severe problems. Serbian is often written in the Cyrillic alphabet, and the others are usually written in Latin, but that's actually the easiest part, and this has already been solved with the language converter.
- In theory, the language converter could be enhanced to be used for more languages, but it would require some development by knowledgeable people, and I'm not sure who that would be. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 19:39, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks, @Amire80. I did not know language converter. Looking its page, I see the concept of language variant code that can answer my question, because my initial doubt was how to identify the dialect in the user's profile to be able to act, either with language converter or with another formula.
- I understand that having a language variant does not mean having a new WP, but a language code with a fallback of the language of which it is a dialect. Is it like that?. Thanks, Amadalvarez (talk) 22:19, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
- Whole new Wikipedias are created only in languages that have full-fledged ISO 639 codes, and that are distinct from other languages. (There are some Wikipedias that were created very long ago, and don't conform to this rule, but new ones are not created unless they conform to it.)
- Fallback is for user interface translations, and not so much for content. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 01:01, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
Issue with Content Formatting in Wiki Pages
I've encountered an issue with the formatting of content in wiki pages on [your wiki]. Specifically, when I try to include code snippets or tables in my articles, the formatting appears inconsistent or breaks entirely.
Expected Result: The code snippet or table should be properly formatted and displayed as intended.
Actual Result: The formatting appears inconsistent or breaks, leading to a less-than-ideal presentation of the code or table.
Additional Information: I've tested this issue across multiple browsers, and the problem persists. It seems to be affecting various pages throughout the wiki. I've also tried different formatting techniques, but the issue remains unresolved.
Request for Assistance: I would appreciate any guidance or assistance in resolving this formatting issue. If anyone has experienced a similar problem or has suggestions on how to address it, please share your insights. Additionally, if there are any updates or changes in the wiki's formatting guidelines that I might not be aware of, please let me know. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Joeroot43 (talk) 19:10, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Joeroot43 most of our projects have the mw:Extension:SyntaxHighlight utility available to help with marking up certain code. Additionally, tables require specific markup syntax as described here: mw:Help:Tables. — xaosflux Talk 19:47, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
Advisory board of a user group
In relation to a question I raised in a grant discussion, I would like to know how advisory boards of affiliates are selected and operate. Is it normal for an advisory board member 1) to be a member of the affiliate they advise, 2) to receive compensation from the affiliate they advise?, 3) to sign a non-disclosure agreement with the affiliate (or its representative, if the affiliate is not a legal entity)? Plus, I would be happy to learn if there is any relevant documentation, besides the points above. The original discussion was in the user group context, not other kinds of affiliate, if that makes a difference. I suppose the answer might be "every organization do it differently according to their needs" but I would like to know there is a general expectation. whym (talk) 10:49, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
- Is there a better place to ask a question like this? Talk:Wikimedia movement affiliates and Talk:Wikimedia user groups don't seem generally active. whym (talk) 05:17, 28 January 2024 (UTC)

- Thanks for the pointer. The mailing list seems to be non-public. Is there a reason not to discuss this publicly? I understand some issues require confidentiality, but I think we are safe as long as we keep it general without going into details like amounts of compensation paid to individuals. whym (talk) 10:52, 18 February 2024 (UTC)

Reusing references: Can we look over your shoulder?
The Technical Wishes team at Wikimedia Deutschland is planning to make reusing references easier. For our research, we are looking for wiki contributors willing to show us how they are interacting with references.
- The format will be a 1-hour video call, where you would share your screen. More information here.
- Interviews can be conducted in English, German or Dutch.
- Compensation is available.
- Sessions will be held in January and February.
- Sign up here if you are interested.
- Please note that we probably won’t be able to have sessions with everyone who is interested. Our UX researcher will try to create a good balance of wiki contributors, e.g. in terms of wiki experience, tech experience, editing preferences, gender, disability and more. If you’re a fit, she will reach out to you to schedule an appointment.
We’re looking forward to seeing you, Thereza Mengs (WMDE)
