VPS or Shared webhost

Posted by hatcat on November 23, 2013 at 12:56am

Hi all, I am fairly new to Drupal. I am re-designing/developing a website for a homeowners association using Drupal 7 that was originally built using tables. On a scale of 1-10 (1 being clueless and 10 being a Drupal guru), I would say I'm a 3. I don't know Php or Linux. I have some basic HTML and CSS skills.

Web hosts

Posted by jstoller on September 29, 2012 at 12:33am

I'm in the market for a new web host. Does anyone have any experience with InMotion Hosting? I'm primarily interested in their VPS offerings, but I'd be interested in stories about their shared hosting as well. Good? Bad? Ugly? What's the scoop?

VPS in NZ

Posted by timtunbridge on February 12, 2012 at 10:25pm

Does anyone have any recommendations for a Xen based VPS host in NZ?

I've had shared hosting with Openhost for a number of years but want to look at VPS now. Openhost use Virtuozzo for their VPS offering which I understand is problematic for Drupal (http://omega8.cc/the-biggest-misunderstanding-ever-122).

If anyone is using Virtuozzo I'd be interested to hear about your experiences.

Alternatively are people using VPS from overseas?

Tim

Getting some performance from BOA Drupal 7 platforms

Posted by playfulwolf on January 17, 2012 at 7:22pm

Hi everyone,

Started to enjoy BOA (2.0.1 HEAD, with already 2 live sites on it). After pretty steep learning curve, still some of performance questions remain.
There are plenty of performance oriented services installed with Barracuda, such as php-fpm, nginx, redis, memcached etc.

I am talking just about Drupal 7 platform, the one, which is included and updated with Octopus. One of the cool features - symlinked modules to all included platforms. There are more performance oriented included with D6, but in D7 just few.
Ones I am interrested most are (probably in order of importance):

Which Linux flavour to choose?

Posted by playfulwolf on December 29, 2011 at 2:24pm

Hi,

Found VPS provider for aegir instalation (up to 15 D6-D7 sites, 1/2 of them corporate brochure type), it will be openVZ with guaranteed 2048Mb RAM, mysql+php+apc+apache+smtp, and other basic services, maybe Apache Solr. Memcahed/Nginx/Varnish is a possibility if performance benefits over simple Boost module+APC are worth pain having another service on same vps.

Which linux to choose from this list:

CentOS 4
CentOS 5
CentOS 6
Debian 4
Debian 5
Debian 6
Fedora 14
Fedora 15
openSUSE 11.3
openSUSE 11.4
Ubuntu 10.04

How to? Determine and fix "minimal" OS in VPS

Posted by rhimes on November 19, 2011 at 3:08pm

ordered/requested a VPS w/ "minimal" Debian (Squeeze) OS from my host - I've yet to find a definition of "minimal(fresh) OS", so I'm a bit confused
1 - how do I verify if that is what I got when logged in as root via PuTTY
2 - how do I correct it if it's not "minimal"

I'm NOT a sys-admin type, so kindly be specific - when I connect I get:
"root@test:~#" ----- "ls -al" returns:

total 20
drwx------ 2 root root 4096 Nov 16 23:57 .
drwxr-xr-x 21 root root 4096 Nov 16 16:55 ..
-rw------- 1 root root 921 Nov 18 11:28 .bash_history
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 558 May 27 01:07 .bashrc

Hi, I want to try BOA and after take a small research I found 2 XEN VPS that suite my budget and both are reliable:

  1. Linode 512 20ドル (512 RAM, 20Gb HDD, 200Gb Bandwidth)
  2. Serveraxis 512 14ドル (512 RAM, 16Gb SSD, 500 Gb Bandwidth) CPU Spec 3/3 (??) IOPS 1k

Linode Pros:
- Linode has TOKYO DATACENTER which has very good latency ~120ms from my location and my target audience (same country).

Linode Cons:
- Not SSD

ServerAxis Pros:
- SSD drive (speedy for a database intensive app like Drupal, but Im not really sure how fast).

ServerAxis Cons:

VPS help?

Posted by GasmanDesign on August 29, 2011 at 4:40pm

Hello,

Does anyone have experience in installing or enabling a GD library (php-gd-5.3.5-1.fc14.i686) on a virtual private server (VPS) with GoDaddy?

The server is Linux CentOS with a C-panel control panel.

The library is used by Drupal (PHP) for working with images. It's not enabled on this VPS. I tried a number of things along with their support guy and could not get it enabled.

Of course GoDaddy has it listed as one of the php libraries that are installed by default.

Any advice or help would be welcomed.

Thanks!

Hjälp med att sätta upp server - php-inställningar

Posted by markus.lar on November 18, 2010 at 9:19am

Hej!
