I have noticed that one a link to a reference is dead (reference 49). The link is to a page of the website of the Baring Archive. The webpage of the Baring Archive has been removed because it has been superseded by new research, published as: M.E. Hay, Transatlantic Finance in the Age of Revolutions. Hope, Baring, and the Financing of the Sale and Purchase of Louisiana (Cham: Palgrave, 2024). You are welcome to update reference 49 by replacing the link to the Baring Archive with: M.E. Hay, Transatlantic Finance in the Age of Revolutions. Hope, Baring, and the Financing of the Sale and Purchase of Louisiana (Cham: Palgrave, 2024), 17-45, 89-138.
Furthermore, the sentences prior to reference 56 have been found to be incorrect. Baring did withdraw from the American part of the financial operation, but Hope did comply, leading to an altered financial operation, with consequences for the division of profits, the relationship between Hope and Baring, and relocation of the success of London overtaking Amsterdam as a centre for international government finance.
It regards the following section: "However, by December 1803, the British directed Barings to halt future payments to France. Barings relayed the order to Hopes, which declined to comply, allowing the final payments to be made to France in April 1804. [56]"
It can be replaced by: "However, on 19 December 1803, the British government insisted that Baring withdraw from any transaction that remitted funds to Paris. Baring saw no option but to comply, to which Hope agreed on the conditions that 1) all costs resulting from the change to the financial operation were for Baring's account, 2) that a large share of Baring's allocation of the Louisiana stock be re-allocated to Hope and associated Amsterdam banking houses, and 3) that Baring not trade in Louisiana stock without prior consent by Hope. [56]"
--> the reference of note 56 should be changed to: M.E. Hay, Transatlantic Finance in the Age of Revolutions. Hope, Baring, and the Financing of the Sale and Purchase of Louisiana (Cham: Palgrave, 2024), 115-118.
Best,

- Done. Thanks for the heads up @Benckendorff. I'm looking over the Hay (2024) source to see if there are other details that should be amended or expanded. ——Carter (Tcr25) (talk) 16:53, 8 November 2024 (UTC) [reply ]
