NANTUCKET as Lightship 112, or all Nantucket lightships?

[edit ]

This article has been cleaned up some but still needs work. First, is this an article about Lightship 112, or about all Nantucket lightvessels? Is seems to be the latter but the first line indicates the former. Kablammo 21:42, 19 June 2006 (UTC) I have changed the text to eliminate the intitial reference to LV 112 as the article is really about all vessels on the station. But there is no clear indication on the picture identifying it. Kablammo 23:47, 25 June 2006 (UTC) [reply ]

I found, added link to NRHP registration document and photos for the ship, and added an NRHP infobox. However, the article is now confusing. I think it should be split, with a separate article for the Lighthouse 112, as there is now enough information for it to be separate. Note also that it is confusing that it was in other states before going to New York, where i think it is now.doncram 19:01, 6 September 2007 (UTC) [reply ]

Dates of service

[edit ]

It's not clear when the Nantucket service started. Was it 1823 or 1854? Was the 1823 date when the Ambrose service started, or was there one at the Nantucket Shoals then? Kablammo 17:03, 20 June 2006 (UTC) Thanks for the correction. Kablammo 23:47, 25 June 2006 (UTC) I[reply ]

Merger proposal

[edit ]

These are obvious candidates for a merge.--Appraiser (talk) 21:01, 12 February 2008 (UTC) [reply ]

Not really. This page could provide a useful overview of the history and development of lightships of Nantucket, with links to articles on the individual ships themselves. It's fairly common practice at WP:SHIPS. There are also noises being made about writing another article on a Nantucket lightship not covered here. Benea (talk) 14:51, 27 May 2008 (UTC) [reply ]

Delamar hotel in Greenwich

[edit ]

A "NANTUCKET" lightship appears to be docked alongside a hotel on Steamboat Road in Greenwich, Connecticut. A sign at the dock gives a telephone number to make reservations to stay in rooms aboard the lightship. A stay in the Nantucket Lightship is currently advertised to cost 1600ドル.00 at http://www.thedelamar.com/rooms.html. I suspect that the Greenwich lightship is LV 162. It seems to be the same at the vessel in Image:Lightship nantucket color.jpg and not the (LV112?) in Image:LightshipNantucket.jpg. Could beter captions be used to more clearly which LV designation is which for the presention of the images in the article? 67.86.73.252 (talk) 16:12, 18 May 2008 (UTC) [reply ]

Split article

[edit ]

I'd like to propose that we split this article either into a disambiguation page with links to the several Lightship Nantucket articles already out there (LV58 and LV112), or an overall history of the Nantucket service with links to each. Would anyone have objections to creating and linking to the 3 additional stubs found here? (We can probably fill them out with information from this site, fairly easily.) I will also remove the proposal for merge since there has been no discussion on that in three months. JRP (talk) 06:30, 4 July 2008 (UTC) [reply ]

The present infobox identifies the 1907 lightship as the first for a station established in 1854. I believe this is misleading. The November 1964 Naval Institute Proceedings includes an article entitled "Portsmouth Naval Shipyard" stating the shipyard launched a Nantucket lightship (probably LV-1) in 1855. Your List of lightships of the United States indicates the station was initially occupied by LV-11. It appears this Wikipedia article was intended to be comprehensive coverage of the Nantucket station, but has listed only a few of the more recent ships occupying that station. Concur with the concept of splitting this article. The site you suggested indicates the station was occupied by LV-54, LV-58 and LV-66 between 1892 and 1907. I believe a comprehensive article should include all of these; and I have made tentative additions for this purpose. Thewellman (talk) 16:42, 23 July 2008 (UTC) [reply ]

Who am I?

[edit ]
Who am I?

I suspect this is 112, seen at the World Financial Center on February 26. Can anyone confirm it and put it in the correct place? Jim.henderson (talk) 01:54, 19 March 2009 (UTC) [reply ]

This vessels appears to be the 612, if more photos are available, i may be able to identify it for sure. See link http://www.nantucketlightship.com/ Pjmarkert (talk) 03:33, 9 May 2012 (UTC) [reply ]

Just compared to video of 612, your picture is definitely the 612. Pjmarkert (talk) 03:43, 9 May 2012 (UTC) [reply ]

613 dates

[edit ]

I have to take issue with the statement: "In 1975 Lightship Ambrose, the Nantucket's sister ship, was renamed Lightship Nantucket II and the two ships spelled one another, relieving each other approximately every 21 days."

I served on the 613 from Sept 1975 to Sept 1977 and it was the "Relief" the entire time I was on board. I can conform that we alternated with the 612 every 21 days, with the exception of one trip when the 612 had problems in drydock and the 613 spent 3 months on station. Nantucket is the station name, not the vessel's name.

[edit ]

The stations were named, the vessels had numbers. A vessel got the station name painted on the side for quick identification of the hazard or place marked by mariners. In most cases many vessels served a station and had the big station name painted on their hulls. A few vessels served very long terms on a station. In no case was the vessel name changed. As with other cases where vessels only had numbers, many Navy harbor service craft for example, the number is the name and is italicized. Palmeira (talk) 16:49, 27 October 2020 (UTC) [reply ]
