File Format. KOffice has switched to zip (instead of tar and gzip) for archiving/compressing its native file format [...] This provides greatly improved document compatability with other Open Source office suites, while enhancing performance. [...]
Dans un interview le 19/02/2002 des principaux développeurs de KOffice la question a été évoqué :
Do you think it would be possible to define a common free format for Office files, like it was done for .desktop files ?
[...]
David Faure: We are currently discussing with the OpenOffice hackers about the ZIP packaging. So the thing we can say in the interview is that one of the plans for KOffice is to maybe switch to ZIP instead of .tar.gz for two reasons:
1. for efficiency reasons (ZIP allows "load on demand", "partial saving")
2. for compatibility with openoffice.
The other plan would be to use openoffice's zip code, and this is what we're discussing with them currently. This solutions makes loading/saving in KOffice much more efficient than using an external ioslave.
