* Windows 7 seems to have promise for being a solid upgrade — at reasonable price of say 59ドル. For 199,ドル I’m not interested.
DP says: Many of you expressed similar thoughts - that for an OS whose primary mission is to fix what was wrong in the previous one, charging the same "new OS" prices is a bit much. Apple’s Snow Leopard, whose similar mission was to refine Leopard, cost only 30ドル for the upgrade. You could argue that Windows 7 adds more new features, but still - should it cost the same as Vista did?
* Amazon is reporting that Windows 7 is its biggest selling pre-order product ever. Even if 50% of the Windows user base waits a year to upgrade, MSFT will be able to call Win 7 a success.
Guess Steve Ballmer won’t have to sell his yacht this year.
DP says: Yeah, that’s the thing. With 90-whatever percent of the market, Microsoft would have a hit if it did nothing but change the Windows color scheme. Vista was a disaster? Sure–and Microsoft sold hundreds of millions of copies of it, each one profitable.
It always cracks me up to read the comments about how Microsoft is doomed. Microsoft is gigantic and insanely profitable, with a monopoly that won’t go away until the concept of business computing goes away, no matter how good (or popular with individuals) Mac OS X or Linux get.
Microsoft doomed? Well, yeah–in the same way the sun is doomed.
