Depuis la version 3.7 sortie fin 2013, POV-Ray est sous licence libre AGPL3 (GNU AFFERO GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE), alors qu'auparavant il utilisait sa propre licence.
POV-Ray date de 1989 et se base sur le logiciel DKBTrace développé par David K. Buck en 1987. La GPL date février 1989.
