When someone asks for something to be done or provided, you can say that they make a request.
My friend made a polite request.
The Minister had granted the request.
You say that someone makes a request for something.

2. used as a verb

Be Careful!
When request is a verb, don't use 'for' after it. Don't say, for example, 'The President requested for an emergency meeting'.
In conversation and in less formal writing, you usually use ask for instead of 'request'.
