2008 Donruss Threads

Now that packs can no longer be found at my Hobby shop, I have decided I really like this set. Luckily, the flea market dude was around for one last Christmas sale and I got a couple of packs. I haven't had much luck in the packs I've opened so far, but my luck changed a little today. Pack one netted four minor leaguers and this:

Pete's one of the main attractions for this set so why not show him off. Here's the second pack and it's much better:

4 Cal Ripken Jr.

62 Jon Still

CL-1 Stan Musial Century Legends

38 Mike Schmidt

95 Josh Vitters

Ripken, Musial and Schmidt in the same pack. Hard to beat it. Josh Vitters is the Cubs' top prospect and was the centerpiece to the aborted Peavy trade negotiations. Still is a first base/catcher/DH prospect for the Red Sox who is probably going to have problems cracking that lineup anytime soon. He's got the bust photo in all the packs I've ripped so far though. I wish they had this at Target instead of Elite Extra. I'd really like to pull a Diamond king out of a pack again.

Sunday Morning Threads

No, not a new suit for church...

Donruss Threads!

The football version this time. A month or two ago when I heard that Donruss was doing a Threads product for baseball, I picked up a pack of football to gauge how it would look. The two base sets are almost identical except for some small tweaks (no team logos in baseball, obviously). Today seems like a good day to post this pack.

50 James Jones
8 Terrell Owens
CS-14 Tony Gonzalez Century Stars Jersey
99 Ray Lewis
57 Marvin Harrison
15 LaDanian Tomlinson

I'm not sure who James Jones is, but the rest are pretty big stars. Too bad none of them excite me at all. Well, Marvin Harrison is all right, the other three are just too malcontented for my taste regardless of talent. The Tony Gonzalez jersey card was a nice surprise from a two dollar football pack. The polyester jersey has a glittery shine to it when the light hits it right. I wish I had more to say about this pack, but I don't. It's a pretty typical low-key slightly boring Donruss product actually.

Friday Night Threads

No, not Saturday Night Threads...

Donruss Threads!

Y'all know what this is... Let's open.

2 Dale Murphy

Muuuuuuuuuurph!!!!!!!! First card of the first pack!!!!! And such a horrendous photo!!! How in the world can such a grainy photo possibly show every vein in Dale's arm? Aaah, who cares, it's Murphy. Good as a hit as far as I'm concerned.

60 Nick Weglarz

My friend Jon has a theory that to really make it in the majors, you need a 'star' name. You know, like Babe Ruth. Mickey Mantle. Barry Bonds. Nick Weglarz? Um, no. The guy's an Indians prospect, taken in the third round in 2005 and played on Canada's Olympic team. Looks like he's got a little power, let's see what he can do at Double-A next year.

84 Sean Doolittle

A's First Base prospect who played college ball at the University of Virginia. Another low-level slugging farmhand who we'll know if they're any good in about 5 years.

70 Brent Brewer

Heh, the Brewers picked a guy named Brewer. I am easily amused. Hey, Brent went to Sandy Creek High School! He was recruited by Florida State but chose the Brewers. As far as his stats go, he's got a lot of speed, but not a lot of hit.

27 George Brett

Ok which one of the 43 Royals fans that I owe stuff to wants this card? I'd like to keep it, but I've gotten a Jason Heyward autograph and a sick Andruw Jones relic card from Royals fans recently so I probably owe them all my Royals 'till 2013.

Decent pack, I got two and this was the better one. No inserts of any kind though which was a bummer. I was hoping for a Diamond King. With any luck we'll see some of these in retail so I can pick up a few more packs.
