ITU Secretary-General


Doreen Bogdan-Martin​Doreen Bogdan-Martin took office as Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on 1 January 2023.

With over three decades of leadership experience in global telecommunications policy, Ms. Bogdan-Martin has emphasized the need for digital transformation to achieve economic prosperity, job creation, skills development, gender equality, and socio-economic inclusion, as well as to build circular economies, reduce climate impact, and save lives. Her historic election by ITU Member States in S​eptember 2022 made her the first woman ever to head the ​1​60-year-old organization. Known for mobilizing innovative partnerships, she aims to promote meaningful connectivity, intensify cooperation to connect the unconnected, and strengthen the alignment of digital technologies with inclusive sustainable development.​​

Space Sustainability Forum
ITU's 2nd Space Sustainability Forum brought global leaders and experts to Geneva, Switzerland, to address the most pressing challenges for the fast-growing space industry. During her opening remarks, the ITU Secretary-General highlighted the need for better communication, closer coordination and a redoubling of sustainability efforts in space.​

Digital Bridge 2025

The ITU Secretary-General, on meeting Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on the sidelines of Digital Bridge 2025 (an international tech forum in Astana), noted the country's impressive digital progress, driven by capacity development in areas from AI to space to cyber. ​

Digital@UNGA

​ITU, Google, and musician, tech founder and philanthropist will.i.am have teamed up to bring AI and robotics training to students across Africa. On unveiling it during the Digital@UNGA Anchor Event at the UN General Assembly, the ITU Secretary-General said: "This initiative will open new doors of opportunity for AI literacy among young people, enabling them to lead the digital transformation that is reshaping how we live, work and communicate."​

Global Symposium for Regulators

​​The Connecting Humanity Action Plan Blueprint published during the Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR-25) estimates total costs of USD 2.6-2.8 trillion to achieve universal, meaningful connectivity. Space Security Conference

At the Space Security Conference organized by the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), the ITU Secretary-General said: "For ITU, a secure and sustainable space environment is one that is free from harmful radio interference — where the use of radio-frequency spectrum and associated orbits are coordinated, efficient, and equally accessible to all actors."​
