Exploring Critical Junctures in Modern History of Sub-Saharan Africa

Outline

Now, in the era of intensifying globalization and conflictual international relationships, states and politics in Sub-Saharan Africa are changing rapidly and, as a result of that, the diversity in African countries is getting wider. This situation requires us to make our understandings on the African history up to date. The purpose of this research project is to reconsider history of the states in Sub-Saharan Africa by using the notion of "critical juncture". This reconsideration will bring us not only deeper understandings of the well-known events in modern African history, but also new discoveries of hidden important historical turning points. With these expected research outcomes, we can reconfigure more appropriate periods of time in each African countries' history as well as in the whole area of Sub-Saharan Africa. Furthermore, by this research, we expect to develop research methods in single case country studies in Area studies.
