The Piano Industry and Social Stratification in Emerging Asian Countries: Preparatory Work for a Study of Cultural Capital

Outline

This research project focuses on the meaning of the piano as cultural capital in emerging Asian countries where social stratification is progressing. Can the arguments presented by Bourdieu, such as "cultural distinction" and "cultural reproduction," be applied to the actual situations surrounding the piano in emerging Asian countries? We review existing research and data on the piano industry (manufacturing, distribution, education, etc.) in China, Vietnam, and Malaysia, and explore the possibility of launching a full-scale research project.
