Social values and public support for social policy in developing countries: The Turkish case
Outline
Public support for social policy depends on not only individuals' material interests but also their social values. In developing countries where the impact of social values on political behavior and attitudes counts more than elsewhere, social policy that builds on economic rationality poses potential conflict with social values. What kind of values promote public support for social policy? For instance, who supports Covid-19 infection prevention policy, universal health insurance, and social assistance? In this research project, we test the effect of social capital, ideology, and group identity on public attitudes toward infection prevention, public healthcare, and income redistribution using surveys in Turkey, where there are large differences in social values among its citizens.
