Compilation and use of the Japan-Taiwan extended bilateral input output table (2020_2_40_018)
Outline
In recent years, production processes have become subdivided into several stages, in which respective countries specialize in producing parts and components under the global supply chain of producing just a single final good for consumers. Traditional trade statistics are no longer sufficient, and firm-level micro data or multi-regional input-output tables are utilized in order to capture this phenomenon. Since Bernard and Jensen [1999] point out that each firm shows different productivity, recent studies consider firm heterogeneity, while multi-regional input-output tables cannot be applied to this because they assume the homogeneity of firms within industries. Against this backdrop, this study aims to compile a Japan-Taiwan extended, bilateral input-output table in which information on firm heterogeneity, such as firm size, firm ownership, and export activity, is incorporated, in order to calculate trade in value-added indictors more accurately and to identify production structures by firm size and by firm behaviour.
