The role of FDI and industrial clusters in industrial development: A comparative study of Thailand and India (2019_2_40_016)
Outline
By undertaking the comparative case studies of the motorcycle, automobile, and food-processing industries in Thailand and India, this project explores how foreign direct investment (FDI) affects the development of industries in developing countries and why so many industries in developing countries become clustered. More specifically, we postulate hypotheses that FDI contributes to industrial development by investing in the capacity-building of part suppliers in developing countries and that industrial clusters are formed in order to maintain and improve the quality of products by taking advantage of geographical proximity between contracting parties. If these hypotheses are supported empirically, prevailing paradigms about the impacts of FDI and industrial clusters need to be reconsidered.
